imagineNative and Lift Mentorship Program

DEADLINE: January 3 ImagineNative

If you have a great idea for a 5-minute short film, let imagineNative and Lift help. Through the Mentorship Program you wil be able to explore 16mm filmmaking through LIFT's workshops, equipment and facilities. Shoot and edit your ideas to film, and see them on screen at the 12th Annual imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival.

This call is open to Indigenous (First Nation, Métis, Inuit, other international Indigenous) candidates only. Preference will be given to artists who have not had the opportunity to work in film. Candidates must commit to attending the LIFT training workshops from March - August 2011.

National Endowment for the Humanities

DEADLINE: January 5

The Bridging Cultures through Film: International Topics program supports projects that examine international and transnational themes in the humanities through documentary films. These projects are meant to spark Americans' engagement with the broader world by exploring one or more countries and cultures outside of the United States. Proposed documentaries must be analytical and deeply grounded in humanities scholarship.

Awards are for one to three years and for up to $75,000 (for development) and up to $800,000 (for production). Successful applicants will be awarded a grant in outright funds, matching funds, or a combination of the two.

New Media Film Festival

DEADLINE: January 15New Media Film Festival

Los Angeles, California, May 19 & 20

The 2nd Annual New Media Film Festival proudly showcases what's new and what's next in the ever-changing world of new media storytelling. With a mandate to first and foremost honor stories that are worth telling, NMFF presents over $12,000 worth of awards and prizes.

NMFF considers entries in a wide variety of categories, including mobile, webisodes, web series, 3D work, as well as traditional narrative, documentary and short films.

Native Lab Fellowship

DEADLINE: February 1Sundance

Sundance Institute's Native American and Indigenous Program has created a Fellowship to provide direct support to emerging Native American, Native Hawaiian and Alaskan Native film artists working in the U.S. The Fellowship is a two-stage development opportunity for filmmakers with feature film scripts, documentary projects and short film scripts.

This year the Native Program is looking for the best genre scripts and documentary proposals out there. Applications are reviewed in a rigorous process by Institute staff and a panel of established filmmakers and judged on their originality, artistic voice and their potential to advance towards production.

U.S./Japan Creative Artists' Program

DEADLINE: February 1

Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission works cooperatively with the National Endowment for the Arts to sponsor The U.S./Japan Creative Artists' Program. The program provides support for up to five outstanding contemporary and traditional artists from the U.S. to spend a three-month residency in Japan to pursue their individual artistic goals.

Applicants should have regional or national recognition and anticipate a highly rigorous review of their work. Artists should also present compelling reasons for wanting to work in Japan.

Grantham Prize for Excellence in Reporting on the Environment

DEADLINE: February 4Grantham Prize

The Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting is now accepting entries for the 6th annual Grantham Prize for Excellence in Reporting on the Environment.
The Grantham Prize honors the work of a journalist or team of journalists for exemplary reporting on environmental or natural resource issues with an award of $75,000. The Prize-winning story will be broadly disseminated to increase public awareness of environmental issues and to inspire exceptional reporting.

Native American Residency Fellowship

DEADLINE: February 15Vermont Studio Center

Starting in 2011, Harpo Foundation will offer two residency fellowships to Native American artists at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT. Artists will be selected on the basis of the strength and quality of their work. Each fellow will receive a one-month residency at the Vermont Studio Center, which will include room and board, a private studio and a $500 travel stipend.

Buffalo Niagara Film Festival
Buffalo Niagara Film Festival

The Buffalo Niagara Film Festival is now accepting submissions for its 5th annual festival.

Cash prizes and beautiful crystal trophies are presented to category award-winners. In addition, BNFF's official selections are up for distribution opps with select distribution partners. Exhibiting filmmakers receive all-access passes to the festival and its filmmaking expo, participate in local tours, and attend plenty of events, galas, seminars, receptions and networking opps taking place during this rapidly growing festival.

NAPT's Assistant Director to Attend the International Film Festival Summit
NAPT's Assistant Director Georgiana Lee will be in Las Vegas for the International Film Festival Summit from December 5-7 at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino. The Summit strives to provide an atmosphere of learning and understanding the latest trends in film festival and independent films. Attendees will participate in peer workshops, one-on-one sessions and roundtable discussions. If you'd like to schedule a meeting with Georgianna apart from the Summit, please email glee3@unl.edu.

NAPT Producer Jenni Monet Attends Distribution U: NYC

Recently, NAPT sent Producer Jenni Monet (Laguna Pueblo) went to New York City to attend Distribution U.

The conference provided an intense 9-hour sesson on technology and industry secrets, as well as stories of success.

Congratulations to Weaving Worlds, For the Generations: Native Story & Performance, Choctaw Code Talkers, Video Letters from Prison and Walking into the Unknown for their recent selection into the 2010 13th Annual Native American Indian Film Festival sponsored by The Eastern Cherokee, Southern Iroquois and United Tribes of South Carolina, Inc. (ECSIUT). The festival was held in Columbia, South Carolina, November 12-18.
