NARK District Family:

Billy Graham once said, "All my life I have been taught how to die, but no one ever taught me how to grow old."  As my 65th birthday (October 22) approaches, I am asking the Holy Spirit to teach me how to grow old gracefully and to finish the race well.  Today's lesson, Paul's admonition about "Discipline of the Body" recorded in 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, reminded me to "keep my eyes on the prize" -- an imperishable crown, the "crown of righteousness" (2 Tim.4:8), the "crown of life God has promised to those who love Him" (James 1:12), the "unfading crown of glory" (1 Peter 5:4).  To receive the reward (crown), we must be " faithful to the point of death" (Rev. 2:10).  I find it interesting that it's faithfulness, not fruitfulness, that qualifies us for the reward.  However, true faithfulness results in fruitfulness -- revealed now or throughout eternity.

The Teacher reminded me that faithfulness requires discipline, self-discipline, from the runner.  That includes strict control of the body (the temple of the Holy Spirit), monitoring what we eat and drink, guarding our minds with restrictions on viewing/listening habits (TV, movies, internet, music, etc), and physical exercise.

In response to the Spirit's teaching, I offered the following simple prayer -- one that you may want to whisper as well:
Lord God, thank you for inviting me to run with you.  Help me to stay in my "lane" and keep focused on the "reward" so that I will not be disqualified from the race.  Enable me, by the cleansing and empowering work of the Holy Spirit, to remain faithful and finish well.  In Jesus' name, Amen.

The 2017 District Ladies Retreat was a huge success!  388 ladies (a record number of attendees) were entertained and spiritually challenged by Donna Kyzer-Rice, our guest speaker.  Director Laresa Reed and her small army of assistants are to be commended for their outstanding leadership of this life-changing event.

We congratulate the following churches and pastors who have had affirming reviews within the past few weeks: Pea Ridge, Warren Foxworthy; Fayetteville, Tim Bullington; Cabot Russell Chapel, Josh Hall; Sherwood, Jeff Taylor; Vilonia, James Smith; Heber Springs, Marvin Frederick.

CrossRoads Cowboy Church is in the process of purchasing property and a building for its satellite campus in Pleasant Plains, AR.  We believe that God will honor this step of faith and bless both the mother and daughter churches with a great harvest of souls.

Rev. Chuck Lauver is spearheading the district's recovery response for the victims of Hurricane Harvey in Orange, TX.  If you're interested in joining a work team or giving toward this effort, please contact Chuck at (817) 913-1508.

Our District SDMI has donated $15,000 toward the construction of a new dormitory at Heath Valley Campground owned by the South Arkansas District Church of the Nazarene.  Jim Thompson, a member of CrossRoads Cowboy Church, is working as a volunteer on the actual construction.  This project will enable the camp to accommodate our ever-increasing children's camp population.  Thanks, Jim.

Rev. Guillermo Mairena, pastor of our Springdale Primera Church, has been appointed to serve as our District Hispanic Ministries Coordinator.  He would welcome an opportunity to talk with anyone who is interested in leading or hosting a Hispanic congregation.  Give him a call at (479) 925-6024.
Rev. Wayne Dawson has accepted the call to become the lead pastor of Ft. Smith First Church.  He and his wife Robin, both MidAmerica Nazarene University graduates, have been providing outstanding leadership at the Guymon, OK Church for the past nine years.  They are passionate  about prayer and disciple-making.  With gladness, we welcome the Dawsons to the NARK District ministry team !
