Miss Laura's 5 Tips for better Turns!
  1. Spot! It will prevent you from getting dizzy and help you turn faster. Your head weighs a lot - keep your turns sharp, fast and clean to prevent it throwing you off.
  2. Heels on the floor before you turn! Many times, dancers form an incorrect habit of moving their standing heel a little before taking off to turn. You need all the momentum you can get from your preparation, keep heels on the floor.
  3. Go directly into passé. Approach it like a balance and turn!
  4. Balance, balance balance! If you wish to achieve multiple turns, balance longer. 2 count balance = 1 turn, 4 count balance = 2 turns, and so on.
  5. Don't be afraid to fall! Remember it's ok to fall - that how we learned to walk! The more you practice the better you will get!

Kristen Palmeri and the New American Youth Ballet in Rehearsal!

Even my dog wants to get into show business!

This was backstage at The Nutcracker with my teacher Karen Harriell. I was 9 I think. Karen is still teaching and dancing as beautifully as ever.
I asked her to share a few words for our newsletter. I'm blessed to have had such a positive teacher - she made a lasting impression on me and still does!
~ Elizabeth

My name is Karen Harriell and I had the great pleasure of teaching Elizabeth the art of ballet when she was a child.  What a focused young dancer and hard worker!  She had natural talent but always strived to do her best in class and on stage.  She gave 100% of herself every time.  Truly a ballet teacher's dream student!

I have been a ballet teacher since 1988 and a dance school director from 2006-2016.  I have seen many young dancers come through the doors of the studio.  I have enjoyed watching them grow in their technique and love for this beautiful art.

What gave me the most satisfaction and feeling of accomplishment were the dancers who made consistent class attendance a priority,  came to class ready to work in the required dress code, took any corrections with grace plus made the changes to improve, and met new challenges with a positive attitude.  These students were the ones who excelled and became strong, dependable dancers.

There is no better feeling than watching young dancers succeed and reach for the stars!
