Iowa Science Teaching Section Conference

The Iowa’s Governor STEM Council presented at the Iowa Science Teaching Section Conference on Oct. 8 in Ankeny. The Conference theme was Cultivating Science Literacy in 3D.  The North Central Hub Manager, Kelly Bergman, and Northwest Hub Manager, Mary Trent, demonstrated hands-on STEM Resources that included STEM in Action kits and Pint Size Science materials.  The North Central Hub office has these resources and more available for educators to check out.   https://www.ncstemhub.iastate.edu/stem-resources
Meet STEM Advisory Board Member Michael Young

Dr. Michael Young, Associate Professor of Mathematics at ISU, learned an important lesson in graduate school that helped him succeed.  “Once I realized that doing mathematics isn’t about getting the answer the fastest, that it is about understanding and learning the process of problem solving, then I knew that I would need to slow down and talk with others to be as successful as possible.”

In fact, problem-solving is a running theme through Dr. Young’s work and advice to young students. His research focuses on Discrete Mathematics and includes graph theory, combinatorics, and game theory. It is the problem-solving that he enjoys most about Mathematics and collaborating with others to solve problems.

Dr. Young is also active in the equity aspects of mathematics education.  He created the Mathematicians of Color Alliance (MOCA) which recruits and supports underrepresented students.  Recently, some of the first African-American students have graduated with PhDs in Mathematics at ISU with support from MOCA. He is also serving on the North Central STEM Regional Advisory Board and the STEM Council’s Equity Working Group.

His advice to math students is to slow down and focus on understanding and learning the process of problem solving.  “Make it a habit of asking ‘Why does this work?’ or ‘Why does this not work?’. This will give you the ability to not only do math, but to discover and create it too.”
