NEW Qualifying Life Event Reason in Benefitfocus for Term Life
What's changed in the Term Life certificate to trigger this:
Prior to 2018, the NCFlex Term Life product required an EOI for employees enrolling or making a change due to a QLE. Starting in 2018 Voya updated their Term Life Insurance certificate with NCFlex to include Guaranteed Issue (up to $200,000 for employees and up to $50,000 for spouse) for qualifying life events. These life events include marriage, birth, adoption, return from LOA (only if the employee had a break in coverage for more than 30 days), and loss of other coverage.
What qualifies as "loss of other coverage" to receive GI:
For the qualifying life event, loss of other coverage, Voya only allows GI when coverage is lost from a spouse's employer sponsored plan. Therefore, Benefitfocus created a new life event called "loss of other coverage (dependent)" which will only show up for the Life Insurance product on the enrollment platform, and it was designed to try and distinguish who is actually eligible for GI.
HBR Responsibility:
It will be important for you as an HBR to make sure employees' life events are valid. If an employee uses a life event that is not valid to receive GI on the term life, they may be denied for a benefit later.
