A Prayer for our

Elected Officials

O God, from whom all power comes,

by whose Divine will all must abide,

we thank You for our civil liberties and freedom,

for our opportunities and our privileges.

We beg of You to bless and enlighten

our elected officials, local, state and federal,

those newly elected and those returning,

that they may prove worthy of the confidence placed in them by their

fellow citizens.

May they be just and upright in their thinking,

honest in all their actions,

and ever be guided by a true conscience in the

legislation they propose or vote upon.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

New Document on the Economy from the U.S. Bishops expected

At their upcoming November meeting (Nov. 12-14), bishops from around the country will discuss and vote on an important new statement on work, poverty and the economy. This and other public sessions will be streamed live on the USCCB website. Tune in to watch the session live and be the first to hear about the new statement. Let your audiences know that they, too, can watch the public session online.

Before then, tune in to a post-election webinar by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on Thursday, November 8, at 2 pm (Eastern). At a time of persistently high poverty and joblessness, programs that serve poor and vulnerable families in their time of need must be protected. Hear what's at stake and what we need to do to ensure that Congress helps, rather than hurts, people at home and abroad struggling to live in dignity. Click here to register for this free webinar

2012 Farm Bill: Petition calls on Congress to act this month

We continue to call on Congress to finish a farm bill this year when they return for their lame-duck session starting November 13. There is very little time for Congress to complete a new bill, so the next few weeks will be critical to tell them loud and clear:  we need an equitable, sustainable 2012 Farm Bill.

NCRLC is part of a major grassroots effort in collaboration with the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition to make our voices heard. There will also be a call-in day of action on Thursday, November 15. Please stay tuned for details to come.

Post-Election webinar on the farm bill, rural policy

On Wednesday, Nov. 14, the Farm Foundation Forum will examine "What the 2012 Elections Mean for Agriculture, Food and Rural Policy." This forum will be 9-11 am (Eastern) at the National Press Club, Washington, D.C. A distinguished panel of industry thought leaders will provide their perspectives on the subject.

Because of strong interest in the topic, especially in light of pending action on the next federal farm legislation, Farm Foundation will webcast this forum free of charge.  This is an opportunity for a front-row seat at a two-hour discussion of timely issues facing the food system and rural America.

Click here to register.  There is no cost to participate.

Please support the annual CCHD collection this month

In most dioceses, the annual collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development is held on the Sunday before Thanksgiving. This collection is essential to ensure that CCHD can continue its work of helping poor and low-income people address poverty in their communities.

Please alert your network to participate in the CCHD collection. In rural communities, CCHD grants have helped low-income day care centers, affordable housing in low-income neighborhoods, legal advocacy to enforce fair wages, and online marketplaces and co-operatives for small artisans and growers.

NCRLC assists rural parishes and other network members in how to apply for CCHD grants. Visit our website to learn more and be ready for next year's application period.
