NCVPSPowerSchoolNCVPS Is Moving to PowerSchool
NCVPS will begin its 2016-2017 enrollment in PowerSchool at the end of March. This will include enrollments for Summer 2016, Fall 2016, Yearlong 16-17, and Spring 2017.

Follow this link to our PowerSchool Cross-LEA Enrollments page for details on how to cross enroll students into NCVPS courses using PowerSchool. This won't be operation in PowerSchool until later March, however, you will get an idea on what the process will be beforehand.

Schools will still retrieve grades for the current Spring 2016 courses in our registration system. After the spring semester ends, we will shut down our registration system. All grades and enrollments will be in PowerSchool after that.
CrystalTOYMrs. Crystal Pullen has been named the 2016 NCVPS Teacher of the Year.

Crystal teaches Personal Finance, serves as an instructional leader, and oversees  our incredible Peer Tutoring Center.

Crystal will represent NCVPS at  the national level in  the  iNACOL Blended & Online Learning  Teacher   of   the   Year  selection process.

We know that many ELAs know Crystal as an NCVPS teacher, and we know that you would like to congratulate her with us.

Crystal was chosen as the Teacher of the Year from three finalists. We would like to also send a special congratulations to those finalists: Heather Ertzberger (ACT Prep teacher) and Teryn Odom (Spanish 2 teacher). Congrats, Heather and Teryn!
APCourseCodesNCVPS AP Course Codes
Please remind your school's AP testing coordinator to have NCVPS AP students input the NCVPS code (045) during administration of the exam.

Students should enter the 045 code into the "Online Provider Code" found on Page 1, Item G of the student's AP answer sheet.

This allows NCVPS to receive a copy of their May 2016 test scores for our records. These scores are needed as part of the accountability piece for NCVPS.

Thank you!
SpringRegSpring Updates

Our Spring 2016 enrollment has closed. However, we still have a number of options for schools.

Credit Recovery: Credit recovery enrollment will remain open until March 18, which is the end of our third marking period. Schools can continue to enroll in credit recovery courses that have open seats.

OCS: Schools can continue to enroll in existing OCS sections throughout the semester. We cannot open new OCS sections after February 3.

1/2 Credit Health and 1/2 Credit PE CoursesRegistration for our 2nd 9-week health courses will remain open until March 21.

Transfer Students: After February 3, we will begin accepting transfers for students who meet our transfer criteria. Transfer students must already be enrolled in a traditional course at the school with an instructor AND have a grade to transfer in with. We will have more details on this next week.

Mastery Learning for First-Time Credit: Our new mastery learning courses will help students who have a special or hardship situation. If any of the above options work for a student, you will need to use those options, but when you are out of options, check out the details here for mastery learning enrollment.

Tech Updates
Spring 2016 Tech Notes

We encourage students to confirm their login information before classes start.

Note that students will have to be enrolled into the course for their logins to work. After a student is enrolled, it usually takes 24 hours for their logins to work.

Are students having difficulty locating your class? During the 2016 Spring semester NCVPS will be offering courses in three learning management systems, Canvas, Blackboard and Moodle. If you are unsure which platform your course is being offered in, please see the "Student BB/Moodle/Canvas Login" link below:

http://www.ncvps.org/index.php/student-bbmoodle-login/

If you have had your password reset, the new password will not expire unless you have reset it. If you have forgotten what your password was reset to, you can look up the help desk ticket to access the new password or click on "Forgot Password".

When requesting help regarding a course it always easier for tech support to respond quickly if we have the specific section name, for example:

CourseSec01Spring16.

When opening a ticket with the virtual support center, please always include the following:
  • Student's first & last name
  • PowerSchool ID number (This will help ensure we have the correct student)
  • School name (full name, i.e. Eastern Mills High School, not EMHS)
  • Course name - if the student is already enrolled,  include specific section, i.e. CourseSec01Spring15.
If you need a new student account for a student who is new to PowerSchool (not just transferring schools), include the following:
  • Your full school name (i.e. Eastern Mills High School, not EMHS)
  • The student's first and last name
  • The student's PowerSchool ID number
  • The student's email address
  • The student's phone number (the contact number this will be in PowerSchool)
  • Does the student have an IEP? Yes/No
  • Does the student have a 504 Plan? Yes/No

Replying to a Support Center Ticket

After you submit a ticket to the Virtual Support Center, you will receive a ticket confirmation and resolution via email. To expedite your resolution, please do not reply to the email. The email will have a link in it for your response. Please click on that link (see below).

This will put the ticket right back in the queue of the person who is working on your ticket. If you reply to the email, then that will have to be manually put into the ticket, and that can delay the process by several hours.

Please have students confirm/update their e-mail. Here's how to do that:
In Moodle:

Navigate to Administration
My Profile settings
Edit Profile
Verify or update e-mail
Scroll to bottom and "Update Profile"

In Blackboard:
Click on students name in the upper right side of your BB course
Click on setting
Click on Personal Information
Click on Edit Personal Information to update e-mail if it's incorrect.
Scroll to bottom and Submit

In Canvas:
Click on "settings" on your name in the upper right side of your course.
Click on "Add Email Address" under Ways to Contact on the right of screen.
Add your correct email if Canvas is not displaying your correct email.
Click on "Register email."
Click the star next to your correct email address.

Student Logins:

Please go to the following link to update Adobe Flash Player to the latest Version 20.0.0.306 http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

There have been a few know audio issues recently, students who are experiencing this  will need to do the following:

1) Firefox is the preferred web browser for all NCVPS courses.
Please try using Firefox as your web browser:
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/

2) Please make sure you are allowing mixed content to come through.

This image shows how to allow mixed content to be displayed in your browser.

3) The latest QuickTime update does not automatically install the QuickTime web plug-in. To install this plug-in, see instructions below:

How to tell what version of Quick time is installed.
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001071.htm

Get QuickTime here: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/

Windows:

If you are installing QuickTime 7.7.9 or above you should select the "Custom" install option instead of a "Typical" install, so that you can include the optional QuickTime Web Plug-in. If you have already installed or updated QuickTime, you can add the browser plugin using these steps:

Find the QuickTime Installer file you downloaded previously and double-click it. (Alternatively, open the Windows Control Panel, choose Programs, then Programs and Features, select QuickTime from the list of installed programs and click Change.)

In the "QuickTime for Windows" window that opens, select Modify.

In the "QuickTime Product Features" window, choose Optional QuickTime Features and, under QuickTime Web Plug-in chose the drop-down option, Entire feature will be installed on local hard drive.

Click the Change button.

The QuickTime installation will complete and the browser plugin will be installed. If you see an installation error, close Firefox (if open) and try again. When you next open Firefox you should see the QuickTime plugin listed in the Add-ons Manager.

****Note****You may have to allow the plugin to run in Firefox. A bar will pop up under the address bar asking for permission.

QuickTime for MAC:

QuickTime v10.10.4

Make sure that you're using Firefox.

1. Choose Go > Go to Folder from the menu bar in the Finder.
2. Type /Library/Internet Plug-Ins in the search field, then click Go. The Plug-Ins folder opens.
3. While holding down the Command (⌘) key, double-click the Disabled Plug-Ins folder to open it in a new window.
4. Drag these two files from the Disabled Plug-Ins folder to the Internet Plug-Ins folder:

                       QuickTime Plugin.plugin
                       nslQTScriptablePlugin.xpt

*******Make sure you MOVE these files, not just copy them. You don't want them in the Disabled Plug-Ins folder at all********

5. If you're asked to authenticate, click Authenticate, then enter an administrator name and password.
6. Quit your web browser, then open your browser again. You should now be able to play the media.

*******You may have to "allow" the program to run. A bar should pop-up underneath the address bar asking for permission.********

Blackboard Instant Messaging (BBIM)

Students will need to click on the BBIM link in their class and create an ID and password that they will remember. NCVPS does not issue BBIM logins nor do we store this information.

Many students visit our homepage to log in to their courses. It is a best practice to bookmark the actual login pages for both Moodle and Blackboard. Please have students and lab facilitators bookmark the following pages:

In addition, many school administrators visit our homepage to log in to our registration system or Virtual Support Center. Please bookmark both of these pages in your web browser:

FacilitatorsLab Facilitator's Guide
Do you have NCVPS students who are working in a facilitated lab at your school?

We have a lab facilitator's guide that  is designed to provide an understanding of the basic processes and procedures that successful online facilitators use to support students.

We reached out to North Carolina public schools and our partner schools in the Virtual Schools Leadership Alliance to pull together the most fundamental elements of facilitating online learning.

Each time we visit a facilitated lab in North Carolina, we see a new process, a new innovation, a or just a new way of thinking in supporting lab students, and we add that to our evolving guide.
