Postdoc Corner
The Nth Degree: Postdocs Can Take Risks While Seeking Their Niche

by Rachel Coker  for Binghamton University Magazine

Tamara Fitzwater, MA '04, PhD '08, is in her second postdoc position at Binghamton University.
Tamara Fitzwater, MA '04, PhD '08, spent an undergraduate summer combing through patient records for a spina bifida study. Later, she milked cows as part of a project on mastitis. And when she finished her doctorate in psychology at Binghamton, she went right back to work as a postdoctoral fellow.

"It's like being born and raised by your scientific parent," Fitzwater says. "You have to go live in someone else's household and see the way they live their life and the way they think. It opens some doors and allows you to step outside your little box."

The postdoc route has become a well-worn path for many researchers. There were fewer than 20,000 U.S. postdocs in science, engineering and health in 1980. By 2000, there were 43,000, and in 2014 - the most recent figure available from the National Science Foundation - there were more than 63,000.

You Don't Know Your Students. This Professor Hopes to Change That.

t's near midnight on a Friday at Kansas State University, and an associate professor of anthropology is out with his students, sneaking onto the rooftop of a campus building - or at least trying to.

A security guard is right on their heels - announced by the jingle of keys in his pocket. So one of the students starts talking loudly about his homework, and the guard loses interest and peels off. Relieved, the students and their professor look for another building to climb.

The professor is Michael Wesch, and that scene comes from his new podcast,  "Life 101." It's an unusual project. After years as an award-winning teacher, Mr. Wesch felt that he had lost that sense of what students were going through as they walked into his large introductory classes, and that made it harder for him to connect and be an effective teacher.

Career Services

by Laura N. Schram for Inside Higher Ed

While in graduate school, I participated in a learning community of graduate student teaching consultants at my campus's teaching center. We consulted with graduate student peers across the campus on their teaching and engaged in dialogue about our consulting practices. Our group's facilitator and mentor --  Mary Wright, now director of the Sheridan Center of Teaching and Learning at Brown University -- designed a range of professional development activities for us to grow as reflective teachers.

One of her activities, designed as a process to help us uncover our teaching philosophies, was transformational for my career development. We brought our draft teaching philosophy statements to one of our learning community meetings, but rather than exchanging them to share feedback, we began with a generative interviewing exercise Wright created. It involved partnering with a colleague and taking turns playing the role of interviewer.

I love it when we get into the nitty-gritty of campus visits. Tiny interview dilemmas - as in all things related to professionalization - actually have a huge impact on the performance outcome, as well as the candidate's sense of confidence. But career advice rarely drills down this far. So I'm glad to have the opportunity. What do you do about a dark room and a wobbly podium?

Rigor and Relevance in Scholarly Publishing -
Save the Date
  • September 30 - October 1, 2016
  • Hesburgh Library, University of Notre Dame
In the digital age, the landscape for scholarly communications is rapidly changing-ideas once considered part of the new frontier are now mainstream. As scholarly careers hang in the balance, we must understand and navigate these new realities or run the risk of being left behind.
  • How do we evaluate electronic publishing in the sciences, engineering, and humanities?
  • What is the role of other-than-article contributions?
  • How should we evaluate article-level metrics as a measure of impact?
  • What does post-publication review mean? Is this a new paradigm for evaluating scholarship?
  • How do we manage grant funded and university public access mandates?
  • How do we avoid predatory publishers?
Graduate students, post-docs and early- career faculty will surely confront these issues on their career paths, especially those who publish in non-print formats. Committees on Appointments and Promotion and chairs of departments need to understand these issues when making recommendations.

This conference brings together researchers, administrators, and publishers to educate and collaborate on understanding the future of scholarly publishing and the subsequent tools for evaluation. Join us as we explore these and other key questions at the center of academic debate.
