Congratulations to ...
... Mr. Vigliotta, a member of the Religion Department, and his wife who are happy to announce the birth of their third child Sophia Ann. She was born at  9:02 am  on January 1st. She was born at 6lbs 12oz and 19.5 inches long. Gregory Jr. And Rose are very excited about the arrival of their baby sister. Mama and baby are both doing very well. 
Student Update
Student Service Hours

Cocoa and Cram
Link Crew is sponsoring Cocoa and Cram (and cookies!) on  Monday, January 9 from 2-3 pm in the cafeteria for the freshmen class. The point of the afternoon is to help freshmen study, be together in fellowship, and help ease anxiety for their first high school exams.  Link Leaders and freshman teachers will also be available so students can get studying tips, answers to questions, or general sage teacher wisdom.  The event is free and all freshmen are encouraged to attend.
26 Acts of Kindness Campaign 
Notre Dame's annual 26 Acts of Kindness Campaign began on  Monday, December 5  and will run through  February 3 , culminating in our annual Community Service Day. Each school day has a different act of kindness associated with it, as we remember the 26 lives lost in the 2012 tragedy in Sandy Hook. All members of the ND community are invited to participate in our campaign. To view the full calendar of events, click here

  • Monday - Be Kind to the Environment: Recycle, use less paper, think before hitting print, purchase a reusable water bottle, etc.  
  • Tuesday - Collection: Donate a canned food for a local shelter 
  • Wednesday - Tutor/Study with a Classmate Day 

The 26 Acts campaign will resume after midterms on Monday, January 23.

The next mite box is on  Wednesday, January 11  for the American Red Cross in honor of blood donor awareness month.

Parent Update
Adult Volunteers Needed for ND's Annual Service Day
Campus Ministry is looking for parents, alumni, and ND friends who are Virtus certified to help chaperone ND's Annual Service Day on Friday, February 3 at the conclusion of Catholic School's Week and ND's 26 Acts of Kindness campaign.  On this day, over half of the student body will go out into the community to give back at sites like schools, nursing homes, and soup kitchens.  The times range but are all between regular school hours (8 a.m.-2 p.m.).  Please email Jess Medoff if you could help at jmedoff@notredame.org and also include how many students you could fit in your vehicle.  Thank you for considering helping for this very worthwhile opportunity. 

Want ND to Volunteer at Your Organization?
If anyone works for a nonprofit organization and would like to request that we have ND volunteers help on Community Service Day, please email Miss Medoff with the relevant information including how many volunteers would be needed, who the contact would be, and what students would be doing.
Financial Aid Deadline is Approaching
Parents are reminded to reapply for financial aid for next year.  Parents must have their 2016 taxes completed in order to complete the process.  The cut off date for filing is April 1, 2017.

Save the Date! - Convivio March 3 - 5
Every year in the Diocese of Bridgeport, over two-hundred teens take part in a weekend event named CONVIVIO, an international conference of Catholic youth. The program first came to the United States in 2010. Coming from different towns and regions, teens meet at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield to be challenged in their Faith and to encounter Christ. This year's event will be held from March 3 - 5, 2017. Click here for more information.

Guidance Department Update
Attention Juniors and Parents of Juniors
The Guidance Department is sponsoring a program for parents to discuss the S.A.T. and College Planning for junior students. You are encouraged to attend this important presentation. The meeting will be held on Monday, January 9 at 7:00p.m. This meeting will be held at Sacred Heart University in the Curtis Hall Building (located next to the Pitt Center) .  The following topics will be discussed:  
  • Introduction to College Process
  • Discussion of the S.A.T. 
  • Introduction to Naviance
Preparing for the SAT's
First Choice College, our SAT partner, will be conducting SAT prep classes for the March SAT at Notre Dame beginning on January 18. Classes will be offered on Wednesday afternoons from 2:30 - 5:30 pm. Students will receive a total of 24 hours of instruction, 3 full-length practice test, access to a proprietary scholarship search program and unlimited retakes of the course over the next year.  Students from Notre Dame can use this discount code:  Notre Dame Class of 2018 to save $50 on tuition for this class.  For further information, or to register for the course,  click here . PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 8/9 Scores Are Coming Soon! 
In January, students in grades 9-11 should receive a copy of their PSAT Score Report from the PSAT taken in October at Notre Dame. Your child may log in or create a College Board account and receive personalized feedback. For information understanding the Student Score Report, please visit www.collegeboard.org. Applications are now being accepted for the  2017 Volunteer Square Spring 
Internship Program. In an effort to expand opportunities for high school students and build stronger volunteer communities in Fairfield County, the program will provide interns training and experience with digital marketing, social media, website maintenance and community relations. The p rogram dates are  January 30, 2017- May 6, 2017. People to People International Student Travel Program 
This summer you could be interacting with elephants, white water rafting and spending the day exploring Krugar National Park on an open-top vehicle safari to just name a few exciting adventures!  On July 6 , Michelle Marella and Linda Cascella, 
Notre Dame graduates from 1993, will be the leaders with People to People International Student Travel Program taking high school students on a South African Safari. Linda has led five other programs in the past and this is Michelle's second year as a leader. Key destinations are Capetown, the Garden Route, Johannesburg and Krugar National Park. You will explore a range of diverse cultures and traditions discovering the secrets of this magical land. Head out on adventures through the wilderness, forge relationships with like-minded peers and contribute to local communities in a positive way . It's also an amazing addition to your college application! 

The group is their first meeting on February 3  at 6:00 at the Shelton Community Center.  There  are three spots left in the group. If interested, please join the meeting and meet the group traveling this summer.  Guaranteed this is a trip that will provide memories that will last a lifetime! Athletics Update
Lancer Week in Review
The winter athletic season has begun and the ND teams have been in full swing since we began Christmas break on December 16.  

The girls' basketball season opened the season 4-0 defeating East Lyme (twice), Bassick, and Thomaston (ND Appalachian Tournament).  ND lost in the championship of the Appalachian Tournament to New London (currently the 2nd ranked girls team in the state).  They began SWC play this week and bounced backed with a win over Pomperaug.  The girls have been lead by Gabby Joseph '18, Zuquila Mbachiantim '18, Whitney Fulton '17, Dayniera Artis '17, and Precious Montgomery '17.  Providing valuable minutes have been Samantha LaValle '17, Erin Harris '20, Bryana Johnson '19, Abby Anka '20, Britney Fulton '17, and Aliyah Lewis '18.  The girls are currently 5-1 and ranked 12th in the latest New Haven Register state poll.  

The girls' hockey team went 2-2 over break defeating Stamford/Westhill/Staples (6-4) and Lauralton Hall (8-1).  Their current record stands at 3-3 overall.  Leading the way for the Lancers have been Emily Rowland '17, Katelyn Pond '20, Ashley Graichen '20, Lauran Dennigan '20, Bridget Magyar '20, Delaney O'Keefe '17, Desiree Sleath '20.  Rebecca Paine '18 has been solid in net making 70 saves in these past 4 games.  The girls are in action again on Saturday (3:15 pm) away vs. West Haven, and Wednesday (1/11) home vs. Masuk at 4:10 pm.  Special Congrats to Karen Garza '18 who scored her first varsity goal against Lauralton Hall!

The wrestling team competed against Stratford and Darien over break going 1-1.  They also competed in a few invitationals: Danbury, Fairfield Ludlowe, and Trumbull High Duals.  Dan Geriak '18 (285 lb) went 8-1 last week at Danbury and Trumbull recording 6 pins and 2 forfeits.  The overall season record 10-4. Jakari Walker '20 (160 lb) finished the Trumbull duals 3-1 with a pin in 31 seconds over Nonnewaug, and two major decisions over Masuk and Simsbury;  overall season record 10-3. Tavon Simpson '18 (138 lb) finished the Trumbull duals 3-1 with wins over Simsbury, Masuk, and Nonnewaug; overall season record 8-4.  Clyde Auba '18 (195 lb) finished the Trumbull duals 4-0 making his overall season record 10-0. At the Fairfield Ludlowe Invitational, four ND wrestlers won their respective weight class: Jacob Castillo '18, Tavon Simpson, 18, Clyde Auba '18, and Jakari Walker '20.  The wrestling team is action on Saturday at the Fairfield Warde Invitational (9am) and next Wednesday (1/11) at Weston (6pm).  
The boys' hockey team current record stands at 1-2-1 with a win over Little Island High School (Maine) and the tie with Iona Prep (NY).  The team went 1-2 in the St. Dominic's Christmas tournament in Auburn, Maine.  The team has been lead by Brian Gallagher '17, AJ Bouvier '18, Tom Kuryla '19, Trevor Sabia '17, and Chris Becker '18.  Billy Scovill '17 has been solid in goal making 103 saves in the first four games.  The Lancers are in action next on Saturday vs. New Canaan at 8pm at home, and next Wednesday (1/11) vs. Notre Dame - West Haven at 4pm away at Bennett Rink in West Haven.

The boys' basketball team is currently 3-1 posting wins over Bunnell, Fairfield Ludlowe and Stratford.  The team has been led by Colin Burke '17, Anthony Mongillo '17, Nori Davis '18, Tyler Bourne '18, Charles Clemons '18, Damion Medwinter '18 and Josh Reaves '19.  The boys are in action this Friday (1/6) vs. Kolbe Cathedral (7pm) at home and next Tuesday (1/10) vs. Immaculate at home.

The bowling team went 1-1 over break defeating Platt Tech.  Their current record is 4-1 and are in second place in the league.  The team has been led by Chris Stevens '19 who had the high game for ND with a 214 and high series with a 602 despite the loss to Fairfield.  In the win vs Platt Tech, Andrew Fallon '17 had the high game with a 245 and high series with a 544.

The boys' and girls' indoor track teams opened up this week so we will have an update in next week's newsletter.  

Congrats and good Luck to Mike Bevino '17 and Micah Brantley '18 who were both invited to participate at the National High School Football Combine in San Antonio, Texas on January 6. The event will be held in conjunction with the  U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which will kick off the following day at the  Alamodome at 1 p.m.  Mike and Micah are only two of 17 high-school prospects from Connecticut and 650 players nationally invited to participate in this combine.  Good Luck!
Boys' Volleyball Meeting
There will be a mandatory meeting on  Tuesday, January 10 for any boys interested in playing boys' volleyball - a new sport to ND - this spring.  The meeting will be right after school in Room 200.  Any questions, see Mr. Bleggi.
