ND Happenings
The Distinguished Scholars Program
On Tuesday, October 4, the freshman members of the newly-formed Distinguished Scholars Program gathered together to celebrate and to be welcomed formally into the Notre Dame academic community.  On hand to welcome them in a special way were the senior members of the National Honor Society who will serve as "Big Brothers and Big Sisters" to these newest High Honors students. It did not take long for connections to be forged, addresses to be shared and ongoing connections planned. As Director of the Distinguished Students Program and Moderator of the National Honor Society, Dr. Callaghan serves as a liaison between the two groups and will coordinate future joint events.  

The freshman Distinguished Scholars are  Olivier Azevedo, Dalond Bidonne, John Fassett, Lucas Gelmetti, Ethan Miller, Linh Pham, Janelle Rosales, Gianna Sansonetti, Sophie Stachurski. Best wishes and congratulations to all of Notre Dame's High Honors scholars! 

"Think Pink" Campaign
On Monday, Campus Ministry sponsored a "Think Pink" dress down day to raise money for the Norma Pfiefer Breast Cancer Foundation and Go4theGoal, a pediatric cancer research foundation.  Students and faculty members were encouraged to wear pink to show their solidarity. Those who participated are shown below:

Volunteering Around the Community...
On Wednesday, nine seniors helped out as peer group leaders at the Kolbe Cathedral High School retreat which took place at St. John's Byzantine Catholic Church in Trumbull.  Participants included Josh Jeudy, Guymara Manigat, Patriney Alteus, Claudia Antoine, T'aira Green, Ajiana Mackey, Precious Montgomery, Isaac Bjerklie, and Teresa Salmone.

On Saturday, members of Campus Ministry helped St. James School in Stratford by volunteering at their first annual Touch a Truck event.

On Tuesday, Emma Sweeney '18, Margaux Atkins '18, Channele Grant '18, and Andrea Quiles '18 went to St. James School to help volunteer in the kindergarten and first grade classrooms.

Walk-A-Thon Update
Our next raffle drawing for students who bring in their donations will be on  Wednesday, October 12 . Congratulations to Bianca Trotman  who was this week's winner of a $25 gift card to Dunkin' Donuts.  Don't forget donations can be made online at . Please spread the word to friends, family, co-workers and neighbors. All donations made to this year's walk-a-thon will directly benefit the Fr. Bill Sangiovanni Athletic Complex -- it's a great way to honor ND's leader and biggest fan! All donations are credited towards the family fundraising obligation of $150.00.
ND Creative Writing Club
The ND Creative Writing Club will be meeting next on  October 12  in Room 205 at  2:05pm .  New members are welcome.
ND Fall Drama: Save Us!
On  Friday, November 11th, Veteran's Day, at  7:30pm in the ND gym, the Drama Club will be putting on Save Us!, a play written by ND alumnus Daniel Murphy '13.  The show takes place in 1938, when a storm sweeps through Doylestown, PA during the broadcast of  War of the Worlds.  People caught together in a diner during the storm seek salvation - but what do they really need to be saved from?  Admission is $5 and after the one-act show, there will be a chance to enjoy one of Drama Club's famous bake sales, and have conversations with the actors.  Please contact Mr. St.Onge at with any questions.
Save the Date! - Convivio March 3 - 5
Every year in the Diocese of Bridgeport, over two-hundred teens take part in a weekend event named CONVIVIO, an international conference of Catholic youth. The program first came to the United States in 2010. Coming from different towns and regions, teens meet at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield to be challenged in their Faith and to encounter Christ. This year's event will be held from March 3 - 5, 2017. Click here for more information.
Annual Pink Football Game
If anyone would like to donate goods for a bake sale, a raffle prize or their time to help at the annual Think Pink breast cancer football fundraiser, please contact

Upcoming Events in Campus Ministry

Campus Ministry is sponsoring two drives: 
1) Old Halloween Costumes to donate by  November 2nd 
2 ) A non-perishable food, toiletry, and gift card drive for the Little Sisters of the Poor in Enfield that will end on  October 14 .  Please bring your donations to your religion teacher or 201A.  

Trunk or Treat Volunteers Needed
Campus Ministry is hosting the 3rd annual Trunk or Treat on Wednesday, October 26 from 3-5 pm in the faculty parking lot.  We are looking for volunteers to run games and decorate cars to give out candy.  We could also use donations of decorations, candy, or snacks.  If you have a young child who would like to attend and participate, they are also welcome.  Please email Jess Medoff at with the number of children participating or with any questions.
Love Life Club
The next Love Life meeting will be held on  Thursday, October 20 in room 201A at  2:00 pm.  Love Life will be sponsoring a movie afternoon showing of Hocus Pocus along with snacks.
Drama Club To Sponsor Paint and Sip for Parents
On  Saturday, October 15 at 6:00 pm, the Drama Club will be sponsoring a Paint and Sip event faciliated by ND's own art teacher, Meghan Balliett.  This relaxing and fun evening will take place in the ND art room, and the event will give participants a chance to enjoy creating art in the 'spirit' of the ND family.  Tickets are $35 and seating is limited.  Please contact Mr. St.Onge for more information at Click here for a reservation form.

College Essay Workshop - October 19th
Members of the English Department will be available to help seniors with their college essays on  October 19th  (Freshman, Sophomore and Junior Guidance Testing Day). Students will be able to get help wherever they are in the process.  There will be workshop rooms for brainstorming/selecting a topic, revision/feedback, and editing.  A sign up sheet will be in room 207.

We still have 8" mums and ornamentals - NOW ON SALE for only $5 and pumpkins $1! We will be selling after school on Tuesday and Wednesday next week - all proceeds will help with the purchase of mobile charging stations for the school.
Walk-a-thon - October 21

The ND Baking Committee is back! If you like to bake, please consider joining to help with various school events throughout the year. Guidance Department Update
College Rep Visits
Visits from college representatives have begun. Seniors should look on Naviance for the full schedule. Seniors must sign up on Naviance to visit with a college representative. Once signed up, please stop by the Guidance Office at least two days prior to get a pass for that day. No student will be allowed to leave homeroom without a pass.  All visits will be at 8:00 a.m. in Room 205.

Scholarships are starting to come in for our seniors who will be attending college in the fall of 2017.  Please be sure to check the Naviance site.  Look under scholarships and see what scholarships are out there.  If you have any questions, please stop by the Guidance Office.

Upcoming PSAT Testing
On Wednesday, October 19, the freshmen, sophomores and juniors will be taking the PSAT.  This is a practice test for the SAT's.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Guidance Office/Mrs. Lisa Seperack at (203) 374-2618.
The Washington Journalism and Media Conference
The Washington Journalism and Media Conference will be held on the campus of George Mason University in Fairfax, VA in July. The conference was developed "specifically for high-achieving, high school students from all across the country who may have an interest in pursuing careers in journalism and the media". A day-by-day conference schedule can be found by clicking here. Tuition for the conference is approximately $2,000. Financial aid may be available. 2016 Congressional App Challenge
The 2016 Congressional App Challenge is now open. Apps must be submitted before the deadline on November 2nd at 12:00 pm.

High School students are eligible to participate in the challenge. Students can sign up as individuals or in a team of up to four. All apps will be presented before a panel of judges for consideration. Winners will be honored by their Member of Congress and have their apps featured on a display in the Capitol Building, as well as on the  Congressional App Challenge website !
Submission Process:
  • Register on CongressionalAppChallenge.US and complete entry form
  • Create your App, you can use the resources provided below for assistance
  • Submit demonstration video of app, no longer than three minutes, in which participant describes what the app does, what the intended audience is, what tools were used to create it, and how it works

Young Artist Scholarship Awards for Playwriting
The Palace in Stamford is pleased to announce the third annual Young Artist Scholarship Awards for Playwriting. The 2017 scholarships will be awarded to three high school students for their writing of an original 15 minute, one act play. The three winning plays will be have a stage reading of their play at the Palace with professional New York actors. The students' will assist in directing their play during rehearsals the day of the reading. Criteria and an application can be obtained by clicking here. The deadline for submission is

Athletics Update
Lancer Week In Review
Despite a 14-7 loss, the football team gave a very good New Fairfield team all it could handle.  The game went right down to the wire with ND driving with under two minutes left on the game clock.  Unfortunately, the drive came up short.  In the game, Mike Bevino '17 made eight tackles on defense and had three receptions for 60 yds.  Micah Brantley '18 had a touchdown run and Clyde Auba '18 had eleven tackles.  The football team will be in action again  on Friday (10/14) away at  7pm vs New Milford.

Boys' Soccer continued its winning ways posting a 2-0-1 record this past week.  ND defeated New Fairfield (1-0) and Harding (2-1) and tied Brookfield (1-1).  With the Brookfield tie, ND continues to battle for first place in the SWC.  This week the team officially qualified for the CIAC Class S State Tournament for the third year in row.  Congrats !!!  Max Cano '17, Felipe Canzian '18, and Carlos Alfaro '19 all posted goals in the three games for ND.  Marcelo DeSouza '19 made 22 saves total in the three games this past week.  

Girls' Soccer also continued its winning ways this past week posting a 2-0 record with wins over New Fairfield (5-1) and Brookfield (4-0).  Samantha LaValle '17 (2 goals), Olivia Carriero '19, Erika Quinones '17 and Brianna Kydes '17 Katie Ciufo '19, Lindsay Salvati '19 (2 goals), and Kascia Zawadski '19, all scored in the wins against New Fairfield and Brookfield.  The girls' soccer team is currently for third place in the SWC.  With the win over New Fairfield, the girls' soccer team officially qualified for the CIAC Class M State Tournament for the third year in a row.  Congrats!  The girls will be in action on Saturday (10/8) vs. East Lyme at home at  11:00 am.

The Volleyball team went 3-0 this past week posting wins over New Fairfield (3-2) Harding (3-0) and Brookfield (3-0).  The team is currently tied for seventh place in the SWC.  With the win against Brookfield, the team officially qualified for the CIAC Class S State tournament for the second year in a row.  Leading the way for the Lancers in the three wins was Liv Silva '17, Michaela Luk '18, Gabby Joseph '18, and Zuquila Mbachiantim '17.

The Boys' and Girls' Cross Country teams competed this past week vs. Weston, Bethel, and Stratford.  Top finishers for ND were Jeremy Tierney '18 and Teresa Salamone '17. 
Sports Sign Ups 
Sign ups for all students interested in Boys' Basketball, Girls' Basketball, Wrestling, Boys' and Girls' Indoor Track, and Bowling have begun in Mr. Bleggi's office (Room 201).  Sign ups will end on Friday, October 21.  Any questions, see Mr. Bleggi.
Athletic Event Season Passes Available
All Season athletic passes are on sale in Mr. Bleggi's office (Room 201) starting on Tuesday, September 6. Family passes are $75 (good for 4 people) and individual passes are $40. Please make checks out to Notre Dame HS.
