U.S. Drought Monitor

The week of May 23-30 had temperatures across much of the country were at or below normal for the period. Most of the Midwest continued its drought free status. Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois had 50 percent of normal precipitation totals for the week. Meanwhile, above-normal precipitation fell in most of the Ohio Valley.

Looking at the 6-10 day outlook, odds favor below-normal precipitation in the Midwest.

Wheat Observers Anticipate Modest Yields

The Illinois wheat crop hasn't taken a big hit for this season, even with weather and disease pressure.

Several groups of agronomists, educators and farmers traveled through southern Illinois on May 23 for an annual crop tour. "We did not get into a bad field of wheat," said Dale Wehmeyer, who owns a seed company based in Mascoutah. "Every field we got into had tracks where they had sprayed. It was quite evident that they were going to experience a good yield."

Using a formula that tiller counts and other measures are used to come up with yield projections, organizers estimated an average yield of 61.1 bushels per acre.  Last year's tour estimated at 63.5 bushels per acre.
