Rep. Jim McGovern
Congressman Jim McGovern spoke to a standing-room-only crowd of NEC members at a Congressional Roundtable breakfast hosted by The Hampshire House in Boston on September 19, 2017.  The Congressman discussed some of the pressing issues before Congress, including efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act and DACA.  He is pictured here with Mary Maguire of AAA Southern New England.

The NEC welcomed Delaware Sen.Tom Carper at a September 22, 2017, Congressional Roundtable breakfast hosted by Bank of America in Boston.  Sen. On September 25, 2017, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse updated NEC members on recent matters before Congress at a Congressional Roundtable at the Providence Biltmore Hotel in Providence, RI.  NEC member Emera Energy kindly sponsored the breakfast.  Senator Whitehouse is pictured here (left) with Alycia Pessoa and Steve Maurano, both of Providence College.

The New England Council's 2017 Annual Dinner will take place on the evening of Monday, October 30, 2017, at the Seaport Hotel/World Trade Center in Boston, MA.  Join us as we honor four remarkable New Englanders of the Year:

Special Event Highlights Federal Trade Resources
Ex-Im, OPIC, USTDA, Commerce Programs Spotlighted
On September 7, 2017, The New England Council--in partnership with a number of other regional business association--hosted a special event highlighting the federal government resources available to New England businesses interested in increasing exports, as well as accessing and investing in foreign markets. 

The event featured presentations and a panel discussion with representatives of several key federal agencies who support U.S. trade activity:

DC Dialogue on NECN
October 1 Show Features UMass President Marty Meehan, Political Strategist Scott Spradling
The most recent episode of DC Dialogue aired on New England Cable News on Sunday, October 1, 2017.  In the first segment, we heard from Marty Meehan, President of The University of Massachusetts and former member of the U.S. House of Representatives.  President Meehan discussed the impact of President Trump's recent announcement regarding the DACA program on the higher education community, and about the importance of federal research funding.  Later in the show, Jim Brett and Eileen Curran were joined by political analyst Scott Spradling of the Spradling Group, for a discussion of some of the most recent developments in Washington, DC, including the collapse of the GOP's latest Obamacare repeal effort, relations with North Korea, and the government response to recent hurricanes.  If you missed the show, be sure to catch up online!

At its recent meeting in Boston, The New England Council Board of Directors elected six respected leaders in the region to join the Board.  The new Directors are:

Op-Ed Highlights Tax Reform Recommendations
As Congressional leaders consider updating to our nation's tax code in the coming months, NEC President and CEO Jim Brett outlined some of the Council's recommendations for tax reform in an op-ed that has run in several regional publications:

Policy Committee Updates
Energy & Environment Committee
The Energy & Environment Committee met on September 26, 2017, at Holland & Knight in Boston.  The meeting focused on energy storage initiatives in New England.  Members heard from Massachusetts Commissioner of Energy Resources Judith Judson, as well as several other NEC members engaged in energy storage projects.  For more information, please contact Sean Malone.
Healthcare Committee
The Healthcare Committee met on September 18, 2017, at The Hampshire House in Boston.  Members heard from Beth Pearson, Health and Economic Advisor in the Office of Senator Elizabeth Warren, who provided an update on the latest efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, as well as other issues before the Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions (HELP) Committee.  Committee members also discussed ideas for future committee activities and initiatives.  For more information, please contact Sean Malone.
Technology Committee
On September 15, 2017, The New England Council sent a letter to members of the New England House delegation urging them to support the CHANCE in TECH (Championing Apprenticeships for New Careers and Employees in Technology) Act (H.R. 3174).  This bipartisan legislation was introduced by Congressman Seth Moulton (D-MA) in July 2017 and seeks to seeks to address the growing skills gap in the technology sector through expanding and investing in technology apprenticeship programs.  For more information please contact Emily Heisig or Taylor Pichette
