NEW YORK – With the first Presidential candidate debate scheduled for Monday at Hofstra University, the
Not Who We Are
campaign today released a new web ad and an open letter campaign featuring real Hofstra students telling Donald Trump how they feel about his divisive and intolerant campaign tactics and rhetoric.
The 60 second web ad was shot this week on Hofstra’s campus in Hempstead, NY. It features real responses from students who were asked whether Donald Trump represents their values. The following is a sampling of their comments:
- “When he made fun of that disabled guy, that kind of stood out to me. That was the moment where I was like ‘Wow, I can’t support this guy.’”
- “I don’t think you can have a racist bigot as president.”
- “He makes me terrified.”
The Not Who We Are campaign will use the video as a paid ad on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook in the run up to, and during, Monday’s debate. To view the ad, click

The Not Who We Are campaign also released an open letter posted on the platform by Hofstra political science student Rob Bielunas. The following are excerpts of the letter from Hofstra students saying Donald Trump is not who they are:
“As a community, Hofstra has worked to root out racism, sexism, and xenophobia, the very ideas Mr. Trump has used to get where he is today. His hateful rhetoric and complete disrespect for his fellow citizens are why we, as members of the Hofstra community, stand up against Donald J. Trump’s run for president…
“As members of the Hofstra community, we strongly stand against Donald J. Trump’s divisive and damaging rhetoric. In modern history, there has never been a serious presidential candidate as reckless and divisive as Donald J. Trump. No modern presidential candidate has done more to increase tensions domestically and cause unease with our allies abroad…
“He degrades women, claimed that an entire racial group were rapists and murderers, claimed a federal judge couldn’t do his job because of his ethnic background, made fun of a disabled reporter who was critical of him, attacked a gold star family, and insulted strong women who stood up to his brand of schoolyard bullying.”

“Donald Trump has run one of the most divisive and hateful campaigns we have ever seen, launching vicious attacks against people of all backgrounds,” said
Not Who We Are’s campaign manager Josh Hendler
. “Since the Donald himself is coming to campus, these Hofstra students are standing up and sending a message that bigotry and hatred are not who we as Americans and not who they are as part of the Hofstra community. Together we are committed to defeating Donald Trump and his brand of politics.”
Not Who We Are
is a movement of people from across the United States who are speaking their conscience by starting open letters as employees, professionals, students, and members of civic institutions to say that Donald Trump’s racially intolerant rhetoric and policies are “Not Who We Are.” The campaign features
NotWhoWeAre.us
, an innovative online platform that allows Americans who are disgusted by Trump’s attacks to sign an open letter or create a more targeted one of their own.
