The Parks & Recreation Division is Seeking Public Input on a Potential Flagpole Project at Thunderbird Conservation Park
Here is a message from Jeff Turney, Chair of the Military & Veterans Affairs Committee
"Happy New Year everyone!!!
We need everyone's support on this project. Please let our Parks and Recreation commission know your thoughts on replacing the present temporary flag and staff with a permanent flag and solar lit pole on top of the mountain at Thunderbird Park.
It takes all of us working TOGETHER to keep America strong. 🇺🇸 This project is extremely important to those who came before us and to those that will follow us!!! It shows our citizens, our State, our country and the world that Glendale values what our flag represents and its patriotic value!!! 🇺🇸 This flag will be a symbol of pride for our city to admire for years to come. I am honored to be able to spearhead the project for all of us. "

The Glendale Farmer's Market is Back!

Get local fresh produce, eggs, herbs, honey, sauces, baked goods, hand crafted items, healthy drinks, hot prepared food, and goods for your garden at the Downtown Glendale Farmer's Market! Families, kids, and dogs are all welcome at this fun community event. The market will be held every other Saturday from January 13th to May 26th from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Arrowhead BMW Dealership Breaks Ground
|
|
Construction on the recently announced BMW facility is now underway with a groundbreaking ceremony November 9th. The 100,000 square foot facility will be located along the Loop 101 between Beardsley Road and Union Hills Drive. The dealership is anticipated to open in mid-2018.

Ray Malnar Discusses New Level 1 Trauma Center
|

Sahuaro District Councilmember Ray Malnar is discussing Banner Thunderbird Medical Center’s new Level I Adult Trauma Center, featuring new emergency services space and upgraded surgery equipment, with CEO Deb Krmpotic and Dr. Kumash Patel, Medical Director of Trauma Services, on the latest edition of “Glendale Today with Councilmember Ray Malnar.”
Watch “Glendale Today with Councilmember Ray Malnar,” slated to begin airing Friday, January 19, at 8 p.m., on Glendale 11. The show is a production of city-owned Glendale 11 TV station and airs daily on Glendale 11.

5th Annual Hike for Hope Benefiting Billy's Place
|
|
Billy's Place is hosting a Hike for Hope that families of all ages to honor the memory of a loved one who has passed away. The hike will take place on February 10th at 10:00 am in Peoria. There will also be a raffle at this year's hike. Proceeds for the event will benefit Billy's Place, which exists to serve grieving children, teens, and families.

Support Local Artists with the Brelby Foundation
|
|
The Brelby Foundation is a new non-profit organization founded in Glendale to help promote the arts and promote community outreach through theatre in Arizona. The foundation is hosting their initial fundraising drive now through the end of the month to raise money for artists stipends and theatre maintenance.
The organization fulfills its mission of artistic and community outreach by supporting the Brelby Theatre Company, a local community theatre in its tenth season of showcasing new and original works in the state. For the past ten years, the Brelby Theatre Company has been known for creating original and provocative works and giving new artists a platform to shine. Showing right now is their Second Annual Night of Shorts, a show featuring six original one-act plays written by, directed by, and starring local artists. Putting on these original works is just one example of the dedication Brelby Theatre Company shows towards ensuring all artists in the Valley have a safe space to create and thrive.

Meet a New Member, Andre Morris of
Morris Barbershop in Glendale!

My name is Andre Morris and I am the owner of Morris Barbershop. I grew up here in Glendale, Arizona. I went to Kachina Elementary from kindergarten all the way through eighth grade, and on to Cactus High School. Marshall Ranch on 59th Ave and Cactus is where I grew up. My dad has worked at Boeing helicopter company for the past 32 years, and my mom stayed home and took care of me and my brother and sister. I am very fortunate to have a great family.
I began cutting hair in 7th grade. My friend asked me to cut his hair in his basement one day and I told him I didn't know how. He said he would show me. So I did. After that he told a friend and I cut his hair and he told a friend and so on. Everyday after school I would go sit in the bathroom, on the counter top for hours cutting my own hair. It became a a passion of mine. I had no idea what a barber even was I was just doing it. I have been cutting hair professionally now for 8 years in February and have owned Morris Barbershop for 2 years.

New Scholarship Opportunity from AZ Credit Union
|
|
As a local financial leader, Credit Union West is committed to supporting Maricopa and Yavapai counties through programs that benefit the community-at-large. In 2018, the credit union is offering $5,000 in scholarships to graduating high school seniors. These five $1,000 awards will allow local high school graduates to offset the cost of studying at a four-year college, community college or trade school.
This year, two new $1,000 scholarships are reserved for students who participated in their school’s Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC). The remaining three awards are open to all local graduates who meet the scholarship requirements.
“We are committed to advancing the economic strength of Maricopa and Yavapai counties,” said Bob MacGregor, Credit Union West’s President and CEO. “These scholarships help local students gain the knowledge and skills needed to fill local jobs and become contributing members of their communities.”
