Administration for Community Living Launches Elder Justice and Adult Protective Services Office

This week, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) announced that they are renaming and repurposing the Office of Elder Rights to become the new Office of Elder Justice and Adult Protective Services, which will house the federal home of APS.

Robert Blancato, National Coordinator of the EJC, said, "The Administration on Community Living's announcement is a further indication that positive steps can be taken on the elder justice front even without needed funding.  The renaming of the Office of Elder Rights to be called the Office of Elder Justice and Adult Protective Services is positive both symbolically and as a real example of fulfillment of work called for in the Elder Justice Act.  That change in addition to the funding of the new APS Resource Center and the work of the Elder Justice Coordinating Council show that the Administration is committed to elder justice."

White House Conference on Aging Website Launches; Time to Share Your Ideas!

Last week, the White House Conference on Aging (WHCOA) launched its website. The conference, scheduled to take place in 2015, has elder justice as one of its four core topics. We'd like to compile a list of ideas for the elder justice component of the Conference, and so we need your help. Email your thoughts about what the Conference should discuss with regard to elder justice and what potential results should come from the Conference on elder justice to [email protected]

November Lame Duck Session Is a Critical Time for Elder Justice Initiative

Lawmakers will return to Washington on November 12 for a lame duck session, where they will be deciding the fate of funding for the remainder of fiscal year 2015. The Elder Justice Initiative is among the new programs proposed for FY2015 but not currently funded. The federal government has been operating under a Continuing Resolution since October 1, which means that only programs funded in FY2014 are receiving funding, and at their FY2014 levels. The spending decisions made during the lame duck session will determine whether the Initiative is funded. Contact your members of Congress to tell them to fund the Initiative today! You can find the information to do so here on our website.

Beware of Fraud during Medicare Open Enrollment Season

Make sure you and those you care for know that Medicare Open Enrollment Season is here! Unfortunately, it also brings a host of fraudsters with it. For example, keep in mind, "Medicare will never call you and ask you for your personal information, such as your Medicare number, over the phone. Never," says CMS spokesman Aaron Albright in this informative AARP article. CMS has also published a guide to avoiding Medicare fraud which you can download here (PDF).
