Moonlight!
Amid the Oscar buzz, it is refreshing to reflect on the winner’s theme of identity, complexity, love, stages of life, and much more. Likewise, the National Hartford Center (NHCGNE) is feeling like a winner! Our new identity is a 501(c)(3) corporation organized and operated for education, scientific, and innovation purposes. We are in the final stages of transition from the Hartford Institute of Geriatric Nursing to our new association management company, the Drohan Management Group, located in Reston, Virginia. The NHCGNE appreciates your support and invites you to join us at the 2017 Leadership Conference in San Francisco, July 22-23, 2017. Our theme is “State of the Future in Global Aging, Dementia & Mental Health: Bridging Leadership, Science, Practice, and Policy.” We look forward to seeing you there!

Marquette University College of Nursing joined the NHCGNE in 2015. The school, led by
Dean Janet Krejci
, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, contributes to the field of gerontological nursing through a number of initiatives. Several faculty members—most notably
Dr. Abir Bekhet
and
Dr. Marge Sebern
—are engaged in research addressing the care of older adults with chronic illness and their family caregivers. The school has also received four geriatric education grants totaling over $4.8 million from the U.S. Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA).
|
|
Dr. Stacy Barnes
, principal investigator for the HRSA education grants, is also the director of the Wisconsin Geriatric Education Center (WGEC), a consortium of academic and health care organizations across the state of Wisconsin housed at the College of Nursing. The consortium partners develop educational products, curriculum, and training programs in geriatrics/gerontology and deliver them to healthcare practitioners, faculty, and students throughout Wisconsin. The center was formed in 1986 and is one of 44 geriatric education centers in the United States currently funded by HRSA under the Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program. It is the only organization in Wisconsin dedicated to providing statewide, geriatric educational programs for health professionals. The WGEC consortium has a long history of pioneering new, interprofessional educational programs and curriculum in the area of geriatrics/gerontology, and has received several awards for innovation over the years.

In this issue, we continue to highlight some of the exciting benefits of NHCGNE membership:
- Opportunities to achieve new levels of accomplishment and leadership in gerontological nursing.
- Access to a "think tank" for collaborative government grant writing—a potential return on investment of $1.2 million.
- Exclusive access to compete for innovation awards and research planning grants.
To read more about these and all the benefits of membership, please visit the
website
.
Reminder: In order to expand the reach of our membership and the impact of NHCGNE activities, we encourage all member representatives to
send a list
of faculty, post-docs, pre-docs (DNP and PhD), and staff at your institution who should receive NHCGNE correspondence. Thank you!

A commentary by Melissa Walton-Shirley, MD, titled “
Why Physicians and Nurses Should Be Texting
,
” was recently published online in Medscape Nurses. Please take a look at the piece and let us know what you think. Should physicians and nurses be allowed to use texting as a way to communicate medical orders and information? We'll report the results in the next issue of New Directions.
