Library Closings
All branches of the New Haven Free Public Library will abide by the holiday hours below:

Park for free after 5:30 pm adjacent to Ives Main Library
Yale's Lot 51, located on Temple Street between Wall and Elm Streets, is available after 5:30 pm for the public, Monday through Friday and all day on Saturday. Yale's Lot 51 has capacity for about 70 cars.

The Library's Temple Street access elevator will be under repair and out of commission starting November 27 for about 4 weeks. Signage will direct library users to the entrance down the pedestrian ramp on Temple Street.

Renovation Updates for Ives Squared
Starting the week of December 4, the Library will begin transferring collections within the building to clear the way for the Ives Squared renovation beginning in January 2018. Signage will direct library users to the relocated collections.

Giving Tuesday is a national movement reminding us each to make an extra-special gift this holiday season: by giving back to our community. This Giving Tuesday, please support the New Haven Free Public Library so we can continue to offer the programs and services that enrich the lives of New Haveners. Pitch & Solve Night | Addressing Connecticut's Opioid Crisis

Clinicians, medical and public health professionals, and harm-reduction experts will discuss challenges currently faced due to the opioid epidemic in New Haven and greater Connecticut. Students and community members are invited to attend to listen and engage as we collectively generate innovative solutions that directly address these issues. The challenges the New Haven Syringe Service Program is currently experiencing served as the catalyst for this event.

The Fair Haven Branch Library turns 100 years old!
Come join us for a fun, family-friendly event that celebrates the Fair Haven neighborhood and the library's place within it! At noon Music Haven will offer a short performance and instrument petting zoo; New Haven Land Trust will have an interactive nature activity and Junta for Progressive Action will join the group. Hollow Earth: Stories from the Underground
is an exhibition of prints and drawings depicting invented realms underneath the earth's surface and featured in the recently released independent publication Hollow Earth. The Hollow Earth hypothesis suggests that the planet earth contains large empty interiors and a variety of subterranean realms. Part of the inspiration for this series comes from a mysterious manuscript within the collection of the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Yale University. The Voynich Manuscript, a mysterious illustrated codex using an unknown writing system dating to the 15th or 16th century, inspires the aesthetic of the Hollow Earth Series. Displaying a scientific interpretation of an alternative world, the illustrations are curious images that depict what appear to be celestial bodies, biological phenomena, botany and other mysterious imagery.

A Field Guide to Long Island Sound consists of recent artwork completed to illustrate Patrick Lynch's book, A Field Guide to Long Island Sound, published by Yale University Press in March of 2017. A few illustrations are also from his forthcoming book, Cape Cod: A Field Guide to the Outer Lands of Cape Cod, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, Block Island, & Eastern Long Island, to be published by Yale University Press in 2018.

eet NHFPL Staff Member: Rhonda Taylor
Rhonda Taylor has worked for the New Haven Free Public Library for almost 20 years! As she shared, she has had the privilege of working at all of New Haven Free Public Library branches: Ives, Fair Haven, Mitchell, Wilson, and currently, Stetson Library.
Rhonda is a mother of two grown children and a grandmother of three, one granddaughter and two grandsons. She is also carrying on a family tradition of public library service! Rhonda is the daughter of former Library employee Darlene Taylor, who retired from the New Haven Free Public Library after more than 31 years. In her time, Darlene was active with the Local 884 Union as well as the New Haven community.
What is your role at the New Haven Free Public Library?
I am a Library Assistant based at the Stetson Library serving the Dixwell/Newhallville neighborhoods.
What do you enjoy most about working at NHFPL?
Two of the things I enjoy the most about working at the New Haven Free Public Library are my fellow staff members and the Stetson community. My co-workers at Stetson are more like family than just colleagues. I also enjoy reading and assisting with ordering some of our African American collections materials. That said I love the diversity I work with the most.
What book are you currently reading or is on your nightstand waiting to be explored?
I am currently reading an urban fiction book by Carl Weber,
The Family Business 2
, the second in a trilogy.
