Celebrate New Haven: A Collaborative City-Wide Photo Collage
Wednesday, June 28, 5:30 pm | Ives

NHFPL and local artist Rashmi teamed up for Celebrate New Haven, a community art project open to the public at all five library locations. Participants submitted photographs of the City of New Haven and all its neighborhoods that were used as elements in ten large, co-created murals. Each library created two collage panels; one will remain on view at the local library and the other will be part of a five-panel installation at the Ives Main Library representing the whole New Haven Free Public Library and its neighborhoods.

Join us on June 28 for a chance to see all 10 collage panels together!

All artists are different and need the freedom to create whatever they wish. For this reason Adae Fine Art Academy offers individual art instruction to each student at the school. Students receive an art class that is specifically catered to their own interests, skill level, and creative needs. Instruction is offered in all levels and media of drawing and painting.

NHFPL Staff Spotlight Inside
Meet NHFPL Staff Member: Maria Tonelli

Maria Tonelli's New Haven Free Public Library career spans several non-consecutive decades.  Maria worked here at the Library in the 1960s and 1970s, and then left in 1976 when she was became pregnant with her daughter Liza. Twenty-one years later, in 1997, after doing several things to occupy her time, Maria happily returned to the Library.  That was the plan, and she's been here ever since!

What is your role at the New Haven Free Public Library?

I am currently based at Ives Main Library where I manage circulation for all five locations of the New Haven Free Public Library system.

What do you enjoy most about working at NHFPL?

My happiest times are interacting with the people - from Library staff to patrons of all ages and backgrounds.  A sense of fulfillment keeps me here.

What book are you currently reading or is on your nightstand waiting to be explored?
Currently I am reading Talking to Animals: How You Can Understand Animals and They Can Understand You by Jon Katz. Jon was a presenter at the Connecticut Library Association Annual Conference earlier this month.  A remarkable man, he left Manhattan to live on a 90 acre farm in upstate New York. He and his border collie, Red, were very popular with all the librarians - his book is a must read!
