What makes an area truly livable? In his new book, journalist and urban critic Philip Langdon shows how people are creating, improving, and caring for walkable communities such as New Haven's East Rock neighborhood-places where residents can walk or bike in just a few minutes to cafes, grocery stores, laundries, schools, parks, and other useful destinations. Phillip Modeen, a Connecticut native, grew up in Waterbury and Wolcott. He holdsan associate degree in general studies and both bachelors and masters degrees in library and information science from Southern Connecticut State University. Prior to his work at NHFPL he volunteered his time with students at Naugatuck Valley Community College working on their campus newspaper. He also worked as a Teen Program volunteer for the Beardsley and Memorial Library in Winsted.

 

Phillip has a background in design, spanning from book covers to clothing! He designed the cover for the second edition of Triple Plays by William H Foster III published by McGraw Hill, and created the book design for Foster's, Proud to be in the Service: An exhibit of black and white photographs featuring African Americans serving in the military during World War II. Phillip also created commissioned artwork for the art and clothing boutique, Brazen Betties. 

 

 

I began working at the New Haven Free Public Library as a part-time Young Minds Librarian for the Stetson Branch in 2015. Last year, I became the full-time Young Minds & Family Learning Librarian for the Stetson Library.

 

 

The best part of my job is engaging with my kids, the community, and teachers in my district; and of course, being a part of the Stetson family!

 

 

I have just finished P.S. Be Eleven by Rita Garcia-Williams, the second book of her terrific trilogy (and my book pick for September, be sure to look out for it on the Stetson shelves!). Currently, I am reading Jam on the Vine by LaShonda Katrice Barnett. I must also recommend picking up I'll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson; it's a beautiful, beautiful book.
