Cardiology reports now digitised
Other specialities will follow in months ahead

It could be end of the road for more printers and fax machines after cardiology reports join the increasing list of forms to be digitized.

A pilot project is taking place in the Llantrisant's Royal Glamorgan Hospital which puts patient test reports into a computerised format. It means when a patient goes for a test such as an ECG, the results can be viewed digitally in .pdf format by cardiology consultants.

The reports are viewed through the Welsh Clinical Portal, where previously they were printed and faxed and could be difficult to read and interpret.

The technology has been developed generically and to a standardised specification, so it can be applied to other specialities in forthcoming months.

New data app for postponed procedures
Cancellations and postponements data now accessed through new information dashboard

Data that throws the spotlight on postponed or cancelled operations and procedures is essential to help NHS Wales plan and manage care. Now, a new software application is making it easier to identify where and when postponements and cancellations take place.

A new information dashboard, developed by the Informatics Service, replaces the production of monthly spreadsheets and allows hospitals and Welsh Government to access this data on demand, when and where it's needed. The data is for Welsh residents being treated by Welsh providers.

Around 80,000 planned procedures are either postponed or cancelled each year due to a variety of clinical or non-clinical reasons, or the patient's own choice.

Robots sort mental health medication
Automated service speeds medication delivery

Patients at an adult mental health facility in Cardiff are benefitting from an NHS Wales Informatics Service application which allows a robot to sort their weekly medication into appropriate days.

Patients at the Hafan y Coed unit at University Hospital Llandough receive robot-produced blister packs of their medication divided into the days of the week. The allocation of medicine would previously have to be completed by hand which could be more time consuming and susceptible to human error.

PACS rolls out in ABMU
Health board is latest to use system for radiology images

Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board is the latest health board to roll out the all-Wales Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS).

PACS manages the storage, retrieval, distribution and presentation of radiology images such as x-rays and ultrasound scans.

Betsi Cadwaladr University, Hywel Dda University, Cwm Taf University and Aneurin Bevan University health boards are already using the system, delivered via Fujifilm's Synapse.

"The big advantage has been the fact that patients images can be seen anywhere in the Health Board, " says ABMU Superintendent Radiographer Ian Worthing. "So if patients have their radiology in one part of the organisation and use clinics in another part, then images and results can easily accessed Health Board-wide."

Same service, new name
WPAS is the new name for Myrddin

Earlier this year, we started to  rename some of our national IT services and incorporate the world Welsh in their titles.

In line with this, the Myrddin service has recently been renamed. It is now known as the Welsh Patient Administration System (WPAS).

WPAS is now live in six out of seven health boards in Wales, with 25,000 registered users  and processing 5.8 million transactions every day.
