We are Neighborhood Housing Services of Waterbury, Inc.  (NHSW) a non-profit, HUD certified organization that was founded in 1980.  NHSW serves low-to-moderate income individuals and families through hands-on educational and counseling programs and has been a significant service provider throughout Waterbury, Danbury, Naugatuck, Torrington and Northwest Connecticut.  Our mission is to revitalize our community through an inclusive approach by providing quality affordable housing, advancing community development initiatives, and fostering financial education, self-sufficiency, and vibrant neighborhoods.
Making Home Truly Affordable
The Adams Street Redevelopment is expected to start construction this fall and be completed in fall 2017.  The development will consist of 6 newly constructed, sustainable, owner-occupied two-family homes utilizing energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies (i.e. geothermal and solar) to provide significant savings.  Specifically, the average annual energy cost for a Waterbury home is $2,200.00; the average annual energy cost for one of our energy efficient homes will be approximately $300.00.  Additionally, the project will consist of a small park with a community garden and an incorporated water feature.
If you are interested in owning one of these homes or want to find out more information, please contact Eden Brown or Kevin Taylor @ 203-753-1896.  Look for our official Adams Street Redevelopment website coming soon.

Success Story

A client facing foreclosure came to Neighborhood Housing Services of Waterbury after falling behind on mortgage payments and not understanding the foreclosure process.  After meeting with our counselor, Maria Rivera, she ascertained that the client was already behind twelve months which had accumulated a delinquent mortgage debt of $20,000.  The client had a loss of income due to loss of employment and an increase of expenses. Due to the reduction of income the client was unable to meet all monthly obligations and credit cards were maxed out.  After reviewing the options, the client decided to apply for a modification. After taking on a second job on a part time basis in order to maintain current with financial obligations. We executed an action plan and applied for a modification with the lender and for rescue funds through our local Housing Authority.  The client was eventually denied a modification from the lender due to insufficient income even with the part time job.  However, the client was approved for the rescue funds.  These funds brought the mortgage account current with the lender and the client resumed the regular monthly payments.  Our client is now able to stay in the home and not relocate the family  from their school and friends.  The client is very appreciative of the counseling services received from Neighborhood Housing Services of Waterbury.

Community Leader Institute Event
This past October, Neighborhood Housing Services of Waterbury sent seven resident leaders to the CLI event in Kentucky. It was there that the residents came up with a program called The Parent Project: Creating Ties that Bind. The program's mission is to empower families to strengthen the bond between parent and child by increasing knowledge and exposure to community assets.
