URGENT: Congress plans pre-holiday attack on school lunch!

***HELP BY TAKING ACTION TODAY***

School lunches are getting better. More than 90% of schools are serving more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

But some members of Congress are working to roll back this progress as they reconvene for the lame duck session. They say they just want to provide schools with a little "flexibility," but in reality their proposed bill would significantly roll back progress, including on whole grains, trans fat, fruits, vegetables, and salt.

Schools need support, mentoring, and technical assistance to meet challenges, not a free pass to serve junk to kids. And kids need nutrition standards based on science, not politics.

Please urge your members of Congress not to turn back the clock on school foods and help ensure that all children have access to healthy foods at school.

Thursday-Friday, 1/15-1/16, 2015

Start 2015 with a new point of view on how to bring out the best in the young people in your program or classroom.

Implementing a strength-based approach in your work with young people starts with a positive point of view. That point of view--readily found in the Developmental Assets--sees young people as resources to be celebrated and supported, rather than problems to be fixed.

If you are ready to sharpen your strength-based practices, please join us January 15th and 16th in Union, NJ for Essentials of Asset Building.

Congress Sends Bipartisan Child Care Bill to President

For the first time in 18 years, Congress has passed CCDBG Reauthorization, as the bill now awaits President Obama's signature to become law.

Recently, the Senate voted to pass S.1086, the Child Care and Development Block Grant Act of 2014 led by Senators Tom Harkin (D-IA), Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), and Richard Burr (R-NC) and Representatives John Kline (R-MN), George Miller (D-CA), Todd Rokita (R-IN), and David Loebsack (D-IA)

In September, the House approved the measure by a voice vote, sending the amended version of the bill the Senate originally passed 96-2 in March 2014.

S.1086 includes measures to:
  • Promote quality child care by increasing state-level investments in activities to improve the quality of care, enhancing states' ability to train providers and develop safer and more effective child care services.
  • Strengthen health and safety requirements in child care programs and providers.
  • Improve access to child care by expanding eligibility for participating families and helping families connect with quality programs that meet their needs.
