Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

Can I use a mini-grant to purchase food?

No. The mini-grants are intended to support the "start-up" costs associated with becoming a sponsor for the first time, expanding existing sites, or adding new sites that utilize the CACFP At-Risk Afterschool Meal Program. This includes:

  • Foodservice equipment
  • Inspection fees/related repairs
  • Transportation related expenses
  • Enrichment/educational activities or supplies
  • Kickoff or Celebration Events (max. $500)

What is the CACFP At-Risk Afterschool Meal Program?

The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) provides federal funds to eligible afterschool programs to serve meals to children age 18 and under during the school year. Eligibility is determined using Free and Reduced Price lunch data for the school district your program operates in. The meals can be served at any time during the afterschool program, either at a traditional dinner time or immediately when the students arrive after school depending on the length of the afterschool program. An afterschool snack can also be served in addition to the meal.

In NJ, this program is administered by the NJ Department of Agriculture. You must apply and become an approved sponsor by the NJ Department of Agriculture. The NJ Department of Agriculture provides the reimbursement for meals and will monitor your site.

Is my program eligible for CACFP?

More information about eligibility can be found on NJSACC's website here.

You can also contact the NJ Department of Agriculture at 609-984-1250 to determine your eligibility and learn about required training dates.

Please continue to contact Lee McDermott Schaefer at: [email protected] or at 908-789-0259 with questions about this initiative.
