$25K Neighborhood Assist Grant - Application Deadline: Sun 3/29
Click here  to open Facebook and apply!

Want to make a contribution to your community, but don't have the funds? Perhaps there's a neighborhood playground in need of repair, a need for an adult literacy program, or a local high school teen driver safety program. Now, you have the power and the opportunity to win a $25,000 grant to make a difference! The State Farm Neighborhood Assist® grant program wants to support local communities like yours by identifying and addressing key issues they face every day.

State Farm Neighborhood Assist® is a crowd-sourced, philanthropic initiative designed to help communities determine where grant funding is awarded, exclusively through Facebook. The application is short and simple. and is available exclusively on the Neighborhood Assist Facebook page (must have Facebook access to view.)  See how this opportunity helped one New York community. You, or someone you know, could be the catalyst for positive change in your community.

The submission phase ends on Sunday, March 29th and each Facebook user who downloads the application can submit up to three causes - one per category.

Anyone living in the U.S. with a Facebook account is eligible to submit. Submit early, as a maximum of 4,000 submissions will be accepted. Causes must fit the categories of safety, community development or education. In the interest of fairness and accessibility, returning grantees cannot win more than twice consecutively.

After the submission stage ends, the State Farm Youth Advisory Board (YAB), a group of college and high school students from across the country, will narrow down all of the submissions to the top 200 finalists. Here is what the YAB is looking for:

  • How much does your "Cause" focus on an unmet need in your community?
  • Why do you feel the $25,000 grant would address the unmet need?
  • How much of a lasting impact on your community would the proposal make?

Once identified, the top 200 causes will appear on the Neighborhood Assist Facebook page to be voted on by you and members your community.

The voting stage will last from May 14 - June 3, with each Facebook user allowed ten votes per day. The 40 causes with the most votes each receive a $25,000 grant. Winners will be announced June 16.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

Can I use a mini-grant to purchase food?

No. The mini-grants are intended to support the "start-up" costs associated with becoming a sponsor for the first time, expanding existing sites, or adding new sites that utilize the CACFP At-Risk Afterschool Meal Program. This includes:

  • Foodservice equipment
  • Inspection fees/related repairs
  • Transportation related expenses
  • Enrichment/educational activities or supplies
  • Kickoff or Celebration Events (max. $500)

What is the CACFP At-Risk Afterschool Meal Program?

The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) provides federal funds to eligible afterschool programs to serve meals to children age 18 and under during the school year. Eligibility is determined using Free and Reduced Price lunch data for the school district your program operates in. The meals can be served at any time during the afterschool program, either at a traditional dinner time or immediately when the students arrive after school depending on the length of the afterschool program. An afterschool snack can also be served in addition to the meal.

In NJ, this program is administered by the NJ Department of Agriculture. You must apply and become an approved sponsor by the NJ Department of Agriculture. The NJ Department of Agriculture provides the reimbursement for meals and will monitor your site.

Is my program eligible for CACFP?

More information about eligibility can be found on NJSACC's website here.

You can also contact the NJ Department of Agriculture at 609-984-1250 to determine your eligibility and learn about required training dates.

Please continue to contact Lee McDermott Schaefer at: [email protected] or at 908-789-0259 with questions about this initiative.
