NJSACC has created a resource booklet for providers that lists easy, inexpensive activities that can connect children with nature in categories like Trees and Leaves and Nature Art. There are lists of field trips and enrichment program resources for providers as well as nature fun facts and nature experiments that can be done in only a few minutes.

Many programs decide to organize larger events to involve families and the community. NJSACC developed an Event Planning kit to guide afterschool programs on how to Celebrate Afterschool with a sample Press release and invitation letters for community leaders and celebration ideas.

 Afterschool is for the Birds!

Literally!  New Jersey Audubon is working with a growing number of afterschool programs to include birds and birdwatching as one option for enriching students' out-of-school time.  No matter where you are located - urban, suburban or rural community, birds are the most visible form of wildlife.  They are easy to see and tolerant of people.  And, they do extraordinary things.  Hummingbirds can fly backwards; Peregrine Falcons can fly at speeds of 200 miles per hour when diving for prey, and owls eat their prey whole and cough up a pellet that contains the prey's bones, fur and other non-digestible parts.

AfterSchool is for the Birds!  (a.k.a. Teaching STEAM through Nature Study and Birdwatching) is a way to connect children to nature in their own communities.  "We use birds as the hook to engage children in a healthy outdoor pursuits and teach them about potential careers in the natural sciences", says Dale Rosselet, New Jersey Audubon's Vice President for Education.

She goes on to say that this 8 to 10 week program "teaches children them how to observe, collect data, make hypotheses, pose questions, analyze and synthesize information" by getting to know the birds in their schoolyards, parks and neighborhoods."

Sam Wilson, teacher/naturalist at NJ Audubon's Nature Center of Cape May is conducting the program with Wildwood Public Schools this spring.  A recent field trip to the beach had children looking at ducks, hawks, gulls and songbirds. They used binoculars, looked through spotting scopes, and collected data about the marsh and beach habitats. When not looking at the birds (a.k.a. ornithologist), kids were looking at rocks (a.k.a. geologist) and plants (a.k.a. botanist), finding evidence of animals, and generally have a fabulous relaxed time outdoors.

Josepha Penrose, Supervisor of Curriculum & Instruction for Wildwood Public Schools, says, "Programs like this help children experience science in a real-world context.  Our main goal as educators is to make learning meaningful for kids and what could be more meaningful than spending time outdoors actually seeing and touching what they have learned about during the school day?  Some of these kids may develop a lifelong interest, hobby, or even career because they went on birding field trips."  When asked what the children liked about the program, one boy said, "Being outdoors is so much more fun than being indoors where there is nothing to do and see.  Science is my favorite subject and what I want to go to college for."

Wildwood Public Schools is part of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program.
