Access Code: 640 306 910

Full Description:
Tinkering ("making") is the intersection of science, art and technology. It is about using familiar materials in unfamiliar ways to create and "make" - individually or with others - something that has meaning to the tinkerer. It is a mindset. This working definition of tinkering will be the catalyst for discussing ways formal and informal educators can engage K-12 grade youth in tinkering as a transformative learning experience. In tinkering, youth are celebrate regardless of their "stance" as a tinkerer.

Through careful observation, both formal and informal educators can capture a child's emerging "transferrable" (21st century) skills while they move through the iterative process of designing something functional, aesthetically pleasing or both! Researcher Kylie Peppler will anchor the webinar with comments from Vermont informal educators working to collaborate with other tinkering-minded educators across school day, afterschool and summer learning.

Join us 5/1-5/3 for 'Hooked on Fishing - Not on Drugs' Training - reg by 4/10
Click here  for details

New Jersey's "Hooked on Fishing-Not on Drugs" Program provides a great opportunity to get kids involved in positive recreational activities. Growing up in a big city, my parents saw value in having me spend my summers outdoors enjoying nature. These experiences afforded me the chance to discover that there is more to the world and my role in it than what the concrete jungle has to offer. Likewise, the goal of this program is to introduce youth to the fun and excitement of fishing, and to engage them in meaningful life skills, so that they also can imagine unlimited possibilities for themselves.

The Hooked On Fishing - Not On Drugs Program (HOFNOD) is sponsored by the Division of Fish and Wildlife, part of the NJ Department of Environmental Protection. The HOFNOD staff will host a 2-day overnight training at Duke Farms in Somerset County May 1-3, 2015. This fishing education program encourages school-aged youth to learn about fishing, aquatic ecosystems and positive life skills as an alternative to the pitfalls of drug and alcohol abuse.

SPACE IS VERY LIMITED.

This intensive training targets middle school to high school educators, aftercare providers and faith or community-based youth organizations seriously interested in incorporating a youth fishing program into their curricula or regularly scheduled program offerings. After the training, funding is available for program support.

Please send a cover letter on your organization's letterhead detailing your interest in the program, relevant contact information (name/address/e-mail and phone number), your goals and/or mission, and a draft plan of how you will incorporate or adopt the HOFNOD program. If applicable, please also include a company brochure.

Deadline for submission is postmarked by April 10th to:

Liz Jackson, HOFNOD Coordinator
NJDEP Division of Fish & Wildlife
605 Pequest Road
Oxford, NJ 07683

No e-mail submissions will be accepted. This training is free and includes all workshop materials, five meals, snacks and lodging. There is a $50 deposit to hold your spot which should be sent with your materials. Make check payable to NJDFW. You will receive an email confirmation of your intent to attend. Attendee selection will be made by April 17th. Those selected will receive an e-mail with specific training information.

DESCRIPTION:
Family and Community Engagement is, "an essential strategy in building a pathway to college-and career-readiness in today's competitive global society."

In recognition of this, the United States Department of Education developed a Dual Capacity-Building Framework for Family-School Partnerships (Framework) to support school districts' efforts to unite families and communities with the common goal of addressing gaps in student achievement.

Accordingly, the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) is presenting a new funding opportunity, "The Family and Community Engagement Expansion Grant," to assist New Jersey's high-needs districts in their efforts to engage family and staff in partnering to develop college- and career-ready students.

The NJDOE's Family and Community Engagement Expansion Grant provides federal funding under Title I, Part A for selected Title I school districts that are interested in using the Framework to align their existing family and community engagement initiatives and modify or expand them to build the capacity of families and staff to participate in effective partnerships that will ultimately lead to increased student achievement. Each grantee will be awarded up to $250,000 for activities to implement the Framework's Policy and Program goals and achieve the Framework's Staff and Family Partnership Outcomes.

In addition, eligible school district applicants must receive Title I funding and have existing family and community engagement programs that:

  1. are community-based;
  2. have a demonstrated record of effectiveness; and
  3. are consistent with the legislative requirements under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) ยง1118(e).

  • Have a minimum district poverty rate of 75%;
  • Have at least 40% of Title I served schools designated as "Priority" and/or "Focus" schools;
