Dear Neighbor:

Neighborhood Legal Services Association (NLSA) has a nearly 50-year tradition of providing legal counsel to residents of our neighborhoods who might not otherwise be able to access such counsel.  We have prided ourselves on the neighborhood aspect of our name, at one time having had as many as 18 neighborhood locations in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler and Lawrence Counties.

Continuing reductions in state and federal funding are forcing legal aid societies - including NLSA - to do more with less. Much less. Sadly, Neighborhood Legal Services is faced with closing our Butler office effective today, Friday, November 22, 2013. NLSA has made significant reductions in our costs in an effort to prevent closures of our local county offices. In fact, just over 20% of the NLSA's staff recently took voluntary and involuntary layoffs as part of the cost-cutting measures. Even these actions were not enough. In order for NLSA to continue as a viable organization, we have no choice now other than closing the Butler location.

Our budget issues create a cruel reality - we will serve fewer clients program-wide. NLSA remains committed to clients. But without a local office, clients will be forced to travel further to receive legal services or rely on NLSA counsel provided by phone. To minimize client travel, arrangements have been put in place for NLSA's legal aid attorneys to meet with and interview Butler clients locally as circumstances permit. Clients in need of civil legal aid, should continue to call Neighborhood's Legal Helpline at 1-866-761-6572 to apply for legal assistance and representation. NLSA's Legal Helpline will answer calls Monday-Friday from 9 AM to 12 Noon and from 1:00 PM to 2:30 each afternoon.

We will continue to provide quality civil legal services to our neighbors in need. For up-to-date information about NLSA, including program information and opportunities to support the civil legal aid in our community, please visit our website at www.nlsa.us. Thank you for your understanding and support.

Sincerely,
