NNCG Project Director AnnouncementTransition

We recently announced that Martha Johnston has left her post as Project Director for NNCG to pursue a full-time position.

Martha has made tremendous contributions to coordinate many of NNCG's most exciting offerings to the field: a more robust online Directory of Consultants and redesigned website, the opportunity to develop a Call for Papers for an issue of The Foundation Review focused on philanthropy consulting, the creation of our Directory Initiative partnership with the Forum and its regional association members, the development of NNCG's Knowledge Center, and an expanded webinar series. Martha has also played a key role in helping us significantly improve our management processes and putting professional policies and practices in place so that we can operate more efficiently.

The NNCG Steering Committee is already on task to ensure a smooth transition and to find a highly qualified candidate to become NNCG's next project director. Joanne Scanlan, NNCG Treasurer, is leading the national search process.  A job description can be found here, and we encourage you to share this information with your networks.

NNCG members should experience no changes in service or communication during the transition period.

NNCG Announces Packard GrantGrant

The National Network of Consultants to Grantmakers has received a grant of $50,000 from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. The funds will help strengthen NNCG's capacity to provide a full complement of benefits and services to members and grantmakers. In particular, the grant will support NNCG's role as co-editor of the first-ever issue of The Foundation Review focused on philanthropy consulting.

We are delighted that the Call for Papers elicited an unprecedented response.  With this grant, NNCG will engage in extensive dissemination activities to broadcast the issue's findings and encourage deliberation among grantmakers and consultants.

FSG and the Collective Impact Forum recently released a new report, Guide to Evaluating Collective Impact

This three-part guide offers detailed advice on how to plan for and implement effective performance measurement and evaluation activities in the context of collective impact.  Additionally, Stanford Social Innovation Review published FSG's "Strategic Philanthropy for a Complex World" in their May 2014 issue.

An article written by AchieveMission was recently featured in the Stanford Social Innovation Review's new series Talent Matters. Contributors to the series include James Shepard, AcheiveMission CEO & Co-Founder, Lori Bartczak VP Programs at GEO, Monisha Kapila Founder & CEO of ProInspire, and Timothy McClimon president of the American Express Foundation. AchieveMission's contribution, "Leadership Development: Five Things All Nonprofits Should Know", argues that leadership development takes courage but is the best investment a nonprofit can make. Read all of the articles in this series at SSIR Talent Matters.

Hank Goldstein, of Family Foundation Management / Counsel, LLC, is the author of a series of blog posts that comments periodically on current events, practices or topics of likely interest to board and staff members of new and emerging family foundations.  See the postings here.

Mark Neithercut, founder of Neithercut Philanthropy Advisors, recently had an infographic published by the Council on Foundations. The infographic focuses on the importance of creating, implementing and monitoring strategies to achieve a foundation's objectives.

Barbara R Greenberg of The Philanthropic Group facilitated a June telephone Learning Circle for 60 funders interested in creating age-friendly communities.  The publication "Building Great Communities: Consider an Age-Friendly Community Assessment," co-authored by Mia Oberlink, Jan Schwarz and Greenberg, was the text for the discussion.  Published by Grantmakers in Aging, the article points out steps to take before conducting a community assessment, the importance of collecting data that leads to action, a range of potential stakeholders to be engaged, and five assessment tools reviewed by funders in aging.

Huffington Post featured the CORR Action Fund and the General Commission on Religion and Race of the United Methodist Church in a recent post, "Yes, Religion Can Still Be A Force For Good In the World: 100 Examples How."  Barbara R Greenberg and Jan Schwarz of The Philanthropic Group are the grantmaking advisers to the CORR Action Fund, which will award $1.0 million in grants late in 2014 for initiatives and campaigns that increase intercultural competency or foster vital conversations about race, cultural diversity, and systemic equity.

Thaler Pekar, CEO of Thaler Pekar & Partners, published Storytelling and the Dangers of Disbelief in the Stanford Social Innovation Review, reflecting on the controversy surrounding the news of Somaly Mann's false narrative. Thaler also presented Sharing Your Foundation's Story: Past, Present & Future, at the Council on Foundations CEO/Trustee Retreat, and the firm was awarded a Telly Award for Internet/Online Video, Social Responsibility, for a video they produced on behalf of The Atlantic Philanthropies.

Arabella Advisors recently conducted an evaluation of The Rockefeller Foundation's program-related investments (PRI), which uncovered many findings that are relevant to anyone interested in PRIs or approaches to impact investing. The report and accompanying case studies confirm that with the right components in place, PRIs can be highly effective in accomplishing social goals and achieving impact. Rockefeller's decision to release the report publicly sets a precedent for sharing insights that can strengthen the impact investing field.
