We've Made Some Changes...

Beginning with this issue, we're making changes to the content and layout of our newsletter. Our new-and-improved Member News, issued every other week, is written for NNSTOY members. On alternating weeks, we'll send a different newsletter to the greater education community (including NNSTOY members) called Education News from NNSTOY.

If you have comments, suggestions or questions about either of the newsletters, please reach out to laurie@nnstoy. We also welcome recommended content from NNSTOY members, including your professional news and recommended reading material.
Conference Highlights
Chicago, July 11-14

Secure your spot and save money. If you have not yet registered for the NNSTOY annual conference, there is still time to get an early bird rate and book a hotel room before they are gone. You don't want to miss this opportunity to refresh and reconnect with other great teachers.

Day of Service. Last year's participants described the day of service as something that was life changing for them. This year's attendees can sign up to work with students at Mooseheart Child City and School or the Schurz HIgh School Maker Space July 11. Participants say service days are some of the most meaningful days of the conference.

Book your Cruise. This year's social outing includes a  cruise on Lake Michigan with dinner and drinks on a private deck. Did we mention the DJ and dancing?  Book your spot now.

Education Policy

ESSA Teacher Competition. Learning Forward and the National Commission on Teaching & America's Future (NCTAF) just announced an Agents for Learning Competition. The competition seeks to engage educator teams in advocating for the best use of federal funding for professional learning under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). As states and districts develop comprehensive plans to implement ESSA, Learning Forward and NCTAF believe it is critical that teachers' expertise, experiences, and input are heard. The organizations have just opened the application process for the Agents for Learning Competition.

As a cosponsor, NNSTOY has agreed to support any NNSTOY teacher team that makes it the finals of the competition by reimbursing them for their travel to Chicago.

Federal Flash. The Alliance for Excellent Education provides brief (under 5 minutes) weekly video updates about federal policy, called Federal Flash. This week's report offers insights into disagreements between Congress and the U.S. Department Education about implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act, or ESSA.
New Ways to Engage

Recruit Members to Join NNSTOY.
Every State Teacher of the Year or a Finalist is already a member of NNSTOY. However, not everyone has joined the association. If you know someone who should connect, please ask them to  join us in our mission to transform the profession by supporting policies and practices that advance teacher leadership and educator effectiveness and that cultivate the conditions, capacity and culture necessary to support great teaching and learning for all students.

Comment on Standards for Aspiring Teachers.
Educators Rising has put together a team of educators standards to "identify the critical skills and dispositions (aspiring teachers) should be developing in the earliest part of the career continuum - while still in high school." The proposed standards are open for public comment through April 25.

Join the Teachers Leading Coffee House.
The  Teachers Leading Coffee House is a virtual space for professional educators to share and discuss important ideas affecting the teaching profession. Members can post questions such as, What is your favorite read-aloud book?  Or members can share an article like the one recently posted on kinesthetic learning. So meet us at the coffee house and invite a colleague to join the conversation!
