In response to Hurricane Harvey's devastation, the Center is collecting non-perishable goods and disaster supplies for Second Harvest Food Bank this month. Drop off critically needed items from this list in our lobby through the end of September. 

The Urban League of Louisiana is seeking applicants for the annual Women-in-Business Challenge, an accelerator program and business competition. Finalists will pitch for $10,000 in capital during New Orleans Entrepreneur Week in March 2018. Apply by Sept. 6 here

The School of Public Health at LSU Health New Orleans has received a $15 million, five-year grant from the Centers for Disease Control. Apply to the 2017 BioChallenge to Compete for Over $50,000 in Prizes
The annual BioChallenge competition gives Louisiana life sciences startups the chance to receive expert feedback on their novel ideas and compete for more than $50,000 in cash and investment prizes to fund growth. The 2017 event is seeking applicants that are developing solutions in healthcare, biotech, environmental science, engineering, and other life science areas. University researchers are welcome to apply. Semi-finalists will pitch to independent judges, and selected finalists will receive pitch coaching by the Center's Commercialization team. This team has coached local startups to international business competition wins worth over $900,000 since 2011. The final pitches will be delivered on November 8 in New Orleans. BioFund Golf Scramble Coming to New City Park Course on Nov. 10
Join us for the fourth annual New Orleans BioFund Golf Scramble on Friday, November 10. This year's event will be held at the beautiful, brand new Bayou Oaks City Park South Course. Practice time and lunch will start at 11am, and our shotgun-start tournament begins at 12:30. After an afternoon on the course, end the day with a relaxed networking hour at the clubhouse alongside regional entrepreneurs, investors, business professionals, and more. Individual and team registration options are available, and you can take advantage of our reduced early-bird rates by signing up here by September 30 before prices go up!

LaCell LLC Launches Spinout Startup Obatala Sciences
Founded by experienced biotech entrepreneurs, tenant company LaCell produces research products for academic and biotech investigators nationwide. The team aims to facilitate the translation and development of adipose-derived stem cells as regenerative therapies for various conditions. Based on the results of recent studies, LaCell is now officially spinning out a new company called Obatala Sciences. The new startup, led by Dr. Trivia Frazier, will focus on commercializing a 'fat-on-a-chip' research product that has already received grant funding from the National Science Foundation. This product will be used in the development of critically-needed treatments for metabolic conditions like diabetes and obesity that are becoming global epidemics. Stay tuned for future updates on the progress of both of these companies.

First, the week kicks off with a Day of Service at Sci High on Sunday, November 5. Our two-day annual conference follows and will feature national industry and investment experts from Shire, Open Prairie Ventures, PPD, Janssen, and beyond. Our biggest events of the year, the University Tech Showcase and BioChallenge Pitch Competition, are back at the Joy Theater on November 8. Spend Thursday exploring the city with visits to two discounted partner institutions, Audubon and the World War II Museum.
