What's New @ Your Library
August 2014
NOPL
August is the last full month of summer, so take the time to squeeze in some great NOPL events we have planned just for you. Visit NOPL.org to find programs, clubs, resources, and information within the Northern Onondaga County Public Library System.
Rocket Languages
NOPL Database

You've done your research and discovered that August is the busiest time of the year to visit Europe. Crowds of Americans have planned their summer vacations competing with French and Italian visitors on their annual vacation month.  You have discovered how to avoid the crowds, hiked up prices, and uncomfortably hot temperatures.  You are a planning genius, and away you go; until you get into a situation you didn't plan for. Its 2pm in Milan and your afternoon shopping trip has come to a halt. The shops are closed. Where did you go wrong?

Available with your library card through the NOPL website, Rocket Languages can get you ready for what's ahead. Whether it's for your vacation, a meet and greet with a foreigner, or to order off a fancy menu without stumbling, Rocket Languages not only has lesson plans on speaking, but teaches you about the language and culture as well. Rocket Languages provides you with small but important insights, such as, between 1-4pm shop owners in Milan go home for lunch. Don't let closed doors ruin your vacation. Open the door to a new language and start understanding the world.

LEDs light up August

Last month NOPL at Cicero's Maker Club was the lucky recipient of $1000 worth of materials from Instructables.com, which was used to grow a Teen Maker Club, plus add Arduino kits and littleBits events. This month the prize from Instructables.com is even brighter. On August 8th from 1-4pm Maker Club will have an opportunity to build something epic with their winnings of over 500 LED lights; batteries included. This is the event Maker Club kids and teens have been waiting for, so mark your calendars and we'll hope to see you there.

While you're dreaming of being tangled in LED lights, consider bringing your best Maker Club projects to display at the library. Maker Club will be taking over NOPL at Cicero's display case in the month of August.  Whether it's a picture of your best work from home or an item itself made at the library we want to show it off.  Contact Nicole Hershberger, NOPL at Cicero's Children's Librarian, to submit your work.

Herbal Drinks to Beat the Summer Heat

The Herb Academy is a three part series that started in July with Presto, Pesto! Deb Thorna presented recipes and provided samples of delicious ways to create, pesto, pistou, and gremolata, as well as other creations to brighten any dish. This August, Deb returns with
Herbal Summer Coolers. Temperatures in August can get hot and Deb will show you ways to beat the heat.  During the class you'll sample herbed ice cubes, lemonade, tea, granitas, and ice pops flavored with your garden favorites. This part two Herb Academy is happening Tuesday, August 5th at 6:30pm at NOPL at Cicero. Bring your friends and make it the fun night of the week! Sign up!

Another spicy herb to think about is hops!  There are many different favorites of beers today, but most beers have the same basic ingredients of water, yeast, barley and hops; ingredients that are easily accessible at your local homebrew store. Curt Harrington, from the new Salt City Brewing Company will provide an introductory talk about growing hops and brewing at home. Meet local beer lovers and learn new uses for hops, at Harvest of Hops: Hops and Brewing 101Saturday, August 16th at 10am at NOPL @ Cicero. Sign up!

Join us for a delightful evening concert with The Cadleys!

John and Cathy Cadley are one of the area's most entertaining and popular duos. Following in the tradition of great male-female duets like Ian & Sylvia and Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons, they show how the simplicity of two voices and acoustic instruments can produce powerful music.

For an evening of soulful duet singing and tasty picking on guitar and mandolin, the Cadleys are not to be missed.

Talk about Tablets

at NOPL @ Brewerton

If you missed the first two Talk about Tablets workshops in July the August 20th class at NOPL at Brewerton is your last chance. Join Al Fasoldt, technology writer for the Post-Standard, and his wife, Nancy, and bring your questions about navigating and using an iPad or Android tablet.  Learn how to share photos, find applications, and be relaxed and confident with a hand-held reader. The workshop will be held at NOPL at Brewerton Wednesday, August 20th at 11am. It's a two hour workshop; the first hour will focus on iPads and the second on Androids. Come for both hours, or just the one that interests you. Registration is required, space is limited. Sign up today.
