A Message From the CEO

One of the great things about working for police officers is that we don't have to spend much time wondering what you think about the job that we are doing for you.

You let us know when you are happy with what we are doing, and you do not hesitate to let us have it if you think we have fallen short or if we have made a change that you don't like.  In fact, I realized a long time ago that change of any kind, even if it represents an improvement, is a hard sell to most of you.

I am certainly not going to tell you that we always get it right, but I am going to tell you that we are always guided by the concept of doing what we believe is right and in your best interests.  Every decision that we make begins with the question of whether or not the consequence of the action being considered will be to your benefit.

Additionally, we strive to maintain all of the things that you love about your credit union, specifically the things that differentiate us from every other financial institution, even as we embrace new and more efficient ways of doing things.

We understand that it is who we are as employees and the members we serve that makes our organization unique.  It is not that a credit union is structured differently than a bank.  It isn't nearly as much about what we offer as it is about who we offer it to and the level of commitment and understanding with which we offer it.

The bottom line is that we'll keep doing what we do so you have a few less things to worry about as you keep doing what you do.  We are here for you and we always will be.

Thank you for your continued loyalty and support!

Jim Bedinger
CEO

Investing for the future starts and ends with wise money management skills learned early on and practiced throughout one's lifetime. A major component to accomplishing this goal is the understanding of
thrift - saving funds for future use.

As education is the cornerstone of financial literacy, and the reason behind our Financial Planning and Education Center, the credit union proudly introduces the inaugural Educational Scholarship Program, which blends our signature  Savings Account with the opportunity to win a $500 Scholarship for members 22 years of age or younger.

Scholarship Program* specifics are as follows:
  • We will be awarding $500 Educational Scholarships to two (2) individual winners. Each Scholarship will be designated for the winners' next high school or college term, and will be held by the credit union until such date.
  • To qualify, you must be 22 years old or younger as of June 30, 2017 and (1) you must open an NPCU Savings Account, or if you already have an NPCU Savings Account, you must add a minimum of $10 to your account; (2) submit an application by clicking here.
  • This contest runs from April 1, 2017 to June 30, 2017.
  • Winners will be randomly drawn during a live TBD end-of-summer event at the credit union's Chicago headquarters (winners need not be present).
As a "True Blue Family Business," we pride ourselves on working with members through the various stages of your lives, from childhood through retirement. As your lives evolve, so do your financial needs. While we are always here to help you every step of the way, we aim to educate and empower you to gain the understanding you need to take advantage of our many products and services. There is no better way to do this than to start early, practice often, and make saving a habit, which is exactly what we hope to accomplish with this program.

Financial Spring Cleaning Check List

As the weather warms up, it's a great time to do some spring cleaning. Don't forget to tidy up your financial affairs while you're at it!
  1. Check your credit for free by visiting www.annualcreditreport.com. Your report will not include your score, but it will allow you to review everything that's being reported. Be sure to dispute anything listed incorrectly. If you have any questions, please be sure to contact our credit guru Gwen Hawkins. Meetings with Gwen are confidential and free of charge for members.
  2. Review any bills that you have set up to automatically renew.  Do you have a gym membership that you never use or a premium music streaming service that you never log into? Cancel them both and save money!
  3. Review your insurance. Make sure that the coverage you have matches your current needs.
  4. Make sure that your contact information and beneficiary listings are up to date on all accounts.
As your credit union, we look forward to assisting you in any way we can. As you know, our Financial Planning and Education Center offers insurance options and financial planning assistance. If you need any help with any of the tasks above, please feel free to contact us at 844.COP.SAVE.

Featured Employee

Guadalupe Quintana,
Senior Branch Representative

My name is Guadalupe Quintana. I am a full-time Senior Branch Representative at the Central branch. I have been with the credit union for eight months.

As a Senior Branch Representative I have a variety of daily responsibilities, including assisting our members with basic teller transactions, assisting with the drive-up, disbursing loans, opening accounts, and introducing our members to the various products and promotions we offer. Every day at the credit union brings the opportunity to hone a skill and learn something new, and I am honored to work with such an amazing team here at the Central branch.

Previously, I worked at Chicago's Byline Bank, where I served in many capacities during my 18-year tenure there, including starting as a teller and leaving as an Assistant Branch Manager. I performed many duties throughout the branch, ranging from Operations to Customer Service. I am very thankful for all of my experiences, even the bad ones, because every encounter has made me the person I am today.

I am a mother of three beautiful, thoughtful, and caring daughters: Crystal, 18; Cristina, 14; and Lili, 12. I really enjoy going out dancing, watching movies, and spending quality time with my family. I am really passionate about cooking, which I started to perfect at the age of 11 while learning recipe techniques from my grandma. I remember helping her in the kitchen with almost every holiday dinner. Memories like those are cherished forever. The most important thing I've learned is that that a good meal brings a family together.

I am very excited to grow within the credit union for many years to come.  It really is a privilege to serve our members, who risk their lives for us on a daily basis.

How will you pay for your bills in retirement?
Know your income sources

Planning for the next phase in your life is like putting together a puzzle with many different pieces. The first step is identifying potential income sources to estimate earnings in order to budget for bills:
  • Social Security: The Social Security Administration offers an online calculator that can provide a rough estimate on what you would be entitled to based on various retirement ages. Go to www.ssa.gov.
  • Pensions and Deferred Compensation 457(b): Before you retire, be sure to fully fund your plan to maximize your benefits. Ask your employer the following questions: Do your benefits increase with inflation and, if so, how is the increase calculated? If you pass away, how will the survivor benefit be calculated?
  • Other Income Producing Activities: Many retirees plan to work part time, consult or freelance in their retirement years. Other possible resources include rental property. Be aware that if you are already receiving Social Security payments, the additional income from other activities may affect your benefit payments.
  • Retirement Savings/Investments: IRAs, Roth IRA's, tax-advantages plans and other taxable accounts can provide income stream in retirement. Consider how much you can afford to withdraw each year without exhausting your nest egg. Consider the tax consequences, as well as which accounts you will tap into first and which ones you will defer to a later date.
Review your plan at least once a year to ensure you are on track to meet your goals. Be sure to contact the credit union's Financial Planning and Education Center, where our the team from  MAF Companies is available to assist and help you plan for retirement. News About LEOs Across the County

"Blue" Pride and Random Acts of Kindness

Individuals and businesses across the country continue coming together to show their appreciation and support of LEOs. While we promote as many of these as we can on our social media pages, the following are a few that deserve extra attention:

If you know of any random acts of kindness involving law enforcement, please keep us informed by emailing [email protected] .  We look forward to hearing from you and sharing your stories!

FAMILY TIES

The ties that bind are thick, especially in law enforcement, where the "The Thin Blue Line" connects one and all. In addition to "Blue Blood," there are many generational ties within LE, and it is a goal of ours to connect the dots. We kindly request you send us your multi-generational and siblings in LE photos along with a brief family history as we work to create the World's Largest LEO Family Tree. To get started, following are recent stories highlighting those in the "family business":
