NPSD Schools Light It Up Blue in Support of Autism Awareness

Schools throughout North Penn School District joined autism advocates worldwide in celebrating World Autism Day on Wednesday, April 2. Staff members and students at each of our schools wore blue in support of World Autism Day and National Light it Up Blue Day.

At Bridle Path Elementary School, teachers displayed stickers in their classrooms in honor of the month. Teachers from the autism support classroom will conduct presentations in each class on Thursday, April 24 to share information and facts about autism with students. To add to the awareness campaign, many books and resources are on display in the main lobby of the school for teachers and students to review.

Pennfield Middle School celebrated Autism Awareness Month and World Autism day by handing out autism awareness ribbons to students and staff and reading facts about autism over the loudspeaker. The hallways of the middle school are decorated with fact sheets about autism and puzzle piece decorations.

Pennfield Middle School special education teacher Stephanie Neri is also sharing a worksheet activity and suggested YouTube videos regarding the disability to teachers.

NPSD Schools Celebrate

Students and families were invited back to school in the evening with their favorite book, a flashlight, blanket and PJ's for some special reading time.

Gwynedd Square Elementary School students participated in a school wide assembly "Who wants to be a Seuss-a-naire." Students were asked questions pertaining to Dr. Seuss stories in the game show style of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire." To view pictures from the Dr. Seuss celebrations, please click here.

Dear Community,

Since 2008, North Penn School District has increased its energy efficiency and strengthened its sustainable energy efforts throughout the district buildings with the help of staff members and students. This initiative not only has led to millions of dollars in cost savings, but our district has worked together to ensure that our facilities and day-to-day practices are more environmentally conscious.

I was recently notified that for the second year in a row, the North Penn School District has been named a 2014 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).This award is given to organizations for strategically managing and improving the energy efficiency of its entire building portfolio.

In addition to saving millions of dollars, the partnerships our students, staff and community organizations have made make me proud. Students have taught their peers the importance of recycling, while staff members have adopted greener techniques in the classrooms and offices.

Additionally, the PowerSave Schools program, where students and staff work together to identify and solve energy problems, helped NPSD to save hundreds of thousands of dollars. Our schools have reduced their CO2 emissions by 12,500 tons during the last two years, the equivalent of planting 282,500 trees. To put these numbers into perspective, the energy the schools saved could power 1,410 homes for an entire year.

The PowerSave Schools program has taught us all that simple changes in day-to-day habits make a big change in your energy consumption. This change in behavior not only benefits North Penn School District, but also our community as we all move toward living a little "greener."

Sincerely,

Curtis R. Dietrich, Ed.D.

North Penn High School Academic Decathlon Won State Competition

The North Penn High School Academic Decathlon team spent two days studying, testing, making speeches, conducting interviews and participating in an oral relay "Super Quiz" during the Academic Decathlon State Competition in Souderton, PA. All this hard work paid off as the team was named the 2014 Pennsylvania State Champions for the second year in a row.

Damian Dharanaj, Serena Jiang and Jerry Zhao all competed in the Honors category. Dhanaraj received two medals in science and social science; Jiang placed second in art and math and placed third in music and economics; Zhao received a gold medal in essay, economics, interview, speech and math. He placed second in art and placed third in language/literature.

The team's scholastic competitors included Yang Yue, Aubrey Kenderdine and Noah Lamb. Yue received a gold medal in science, music and math; as well as, a silver medal in economics and social science and a bronze medal in art, language and literature. Kenderdine placed second in science and third in essay, economics and math.

The team had two students who competed at the varsity level. Maisha Islam received four gold medals for math, art, science and economics; a silver media in music and a bronze medal in language and literature. Chris Sibel placed third in science.

Maisha Islam, along with Yang Yue, Serena Jiang and Jerry Zhao took four spots on the Pennsylvania "All State" team. This recognition means they had earned the highest overall scores in their respective categories.

With this title, the team will now go on to represent North Penn High School and Pennsylvania as they compete at the national competition in Honolulu, Hawaii later this April.

Mayday! The NPSD Educational Foundation Needs Your Help!

Mayday, mayday, mayday! The NPSD Educational Foundation needs your help! To reach its mission of motivating North Penn School District students through innovative projects and learning experiences, the Foundation is launching a new fundraiser! From April 24 to May 1, 2014, all North Penn community members will be invited to bid on "once-in-a-lifetime" North Penn experiences through an online auction. Funds raised through this auction will return to NPSD classrooms through grants for the 2014-2015 school year, and years to come.

Although the list of auction items will not be released until April 24, all items will provide community members with a unique, memorable experience. For hints and updates leading up to the Mayday Online Auction, like the NPSD Educational Foundation on Facebook by clicking here.

Now, more than ever, the community must come together to support the NPSD Educational Foundation. The Foundation must maintain its funding to support innovative classroom projects and our students, despite the growing financial challenges faced by all types of organizations.

The Foundation has shown dedication to and belief in our students, staff and community by providing more than $750,000 in funding for special projects and grants. When the organization started in 1988, it contributed more than $6,000 through 11 grants. Contrast this number to our current school year, when the Foundation awarded approximately $78,000 through 54 grants. Through fundraising efforts, the organization has expanded the opportunities available to North Penn students. With the community's support of the Mayday Online Auction, these experiences will reach even more NPSD students and staff.

NPSD Recognizes Music Program Successes Throughout "Music in Our Schools" Month

The month of March celebrated music education as designated by the National Association for Music Educators (NAfME) as being named Music in Our Schools month. Throughout this time of year, music education became the focus of schools across the nation, being an appropriate time to congratulate the NPSD music department on their recent accomplishments.

The jazz ensembles from Pennbrook and Penndale middle schools, as well as the Wind Ensemble from North Penn High School were selected to perform at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) State Convention in late March. The ensembles' were invited as a result of audition recordings submitted to the PMEA in the spring of 2013. The audition committee reviewed more than 130 recordings from around the state and selected the top band, orchestra and choral ensembles at the elementary, middle, high school and college level.

The Pennbrook and Penndale jazz ensembles are comprised of seventh, eighth and ninth grade students who are selected by audition from each of the school's three concert bands. The ensembles rehearse one evening a week from October to May and perform frequently throughout the North Penn School District and surrounding area at school concerts, music festivals and community events. Both ensembles have been awarded "Superior" ratings at area band festivals.

The North Penn High School Wind Ensemble, directed by Mr. Michael Britcher, is comprised of 60 students who were selected by audition from the more than 200 band student musicians in grades 10-12 at the high school. The Wind Ensemble performed at the 2012 Music for National Concert Festival, in Indianapolis, and the 2013 Mid-Atlantic Honors Wind Band Festival at Rutgers University.

The wind Ensemble and jazz ensembles performed at Hershey Lodge before an audience of music educators, musicians, composers, music publishers, music industry representatives and parents.

In addition to these performances, several NPHS students were selected to All-State ensembles. These students were selected after rigorous auditions at the District and Regional levels. Sophomores Joshua Faia and Joshua Weckerly were named to All-State Band. Tucker Breder, Alison Chapman, Kuhoo Verma and Brianna Weckerly are participating in the all-state chorus. Sophomore Neil Goh was named to the all-state orchestra and senior Anthony Cubbage was named to all-state vocal jazz. Congratulations to these incredibly talented NPHS student musicians.

In late March, NPSD was notified that the district was again recognized as a "Best Community for Music Education" by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM). It is one of the more than 300 school districts nationwide that received the prestigious designation.

The Best Communities designation recognizes collaborative, from-the-ground-up efforts of teachers, administrators, students and parents who continually work to keep comprehensive music education as an integral part of the core curriculum.

"The student musicians in North Penn School District are not only talented, but also dedicated to succeeding in music. This passion is because of the time and commitment given from each teacher in our music department and the dedication of our families," said NPSD superintendent Dr. Curtis Dietrich. "Participation in music activities helps to develop a student as a whole. Student increase their musical aptitude and skills, but learn leadership skills, social skills, teamwork, and a strong work ethic and appreciation of one's craft from their studies."

NPHS Key Club Receives State Recognition at Convention
Twenty students from North Penn High School's Key Club traveled to Harrisburg for the 68th annual Pennsylvania District Convention. This convention brings together thousands of Key Club officers, advisors and members from across the state for a weekend full of inspiration, leadership, and excitement.

Friday night began with the opening ceremony which included the introduction of the district board, the new district administrator, governor and keynote speaker. After the lengthy session, students broke out into workshops to learn about skills necessary for a successful Key Club. Students attended workshops that focused on the use of social media, time management, organization of meetings, and improvement of member turnout.

The highlight of the second night was the general session which includes the awards ceremony. Every club from across the state submitted information, data and creative projects for competition within the state. The NPHS Key Club submitted a traditional scrapbook and digital poster which received high marks. The club received first place for most service hours. The club members completed 7,841 hours, almost 1,500 more hours than runner up. NPHS Key Club also won first place in total number of hours committed to the Youth-Serving-Youth (YSY) project with 529 total hours. The club won second place in total amount of money raised for the YSY project at $3,000. Every officer of the Key Club was recognized as a distinguished officer and NPHS sophomore Niketa Kulkarni was elected as the notable Lieutenant Governor of division 19C.

Congratulations to the NPHS Key Club members and adviser Linda Law for all their awards and recognitions!

NPSD Odyssey of the Mind Teams Succeed at Competition

Odyssey of the Mind teams from throughout North Penn School District participated in a local tournament competing against other local schools. 130 students represented NPSD from Bridle Path, Gwyn Nor, Inglewood and Montgomery elementary schools; Pennbrook and Penndale middle schools and North Penn High School.

All the teams worked hard to represent the district proudly at the tournament, even sporting district t-shirts voted on and designed by students. Five teams have advanced to the state competition; these teams are from Bridle Path and Nash elementary schools, Pennbrook Middle School, Penndale Middle School and North Penn High School. The state competition will take place on April 12 at Berwick Area High School, Berwick, PA.

Last year, the NPHS team advanced to World Finals and placed second in their division. This team has had a tradition of excellence throughout their years together that has inspired and motivated other NPSD teams to follow in their footsteps.
