NPSD Earns Placement on Advanced Placement Honor Roll List

The North Penn School District was recently placed on the Advanced Placement (AP) District Honor Roll List. NPSD is one of 477 school districts from across the country and Canada who were placed on the 4th Annual Honor Roll by the College Board.

School districts were selected for simultaneously increasing access to AP coursework while increasing the percentages of students earning scores of a three or higher on an AP exam. Increasing both participation and the number of students earning a three or higher on the exam is an ideal scenario for a district's AP program because it indicates that the district is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are likely to benefit most from rigorous AP coursework.

Dear Community,

Happy New Year! As we end one year and start another, one often reflects on the accomplishments of the past 12 months and the goals for the year ahead. Over the break, I had a chance to do just that.

Of course there are many successes for which I am extremely proud, from our School Performance Profile (SPP) ratings, to the individual and team achievements of our students, to the hard work of our staff as we roll out several state mandates including the Educator Effectiveness Model and the Keystone Exams.

I also look back on the year and note areas where I know we can improve. Communications is always at the top of the list and I am always striving to find more ways to better engage our families, staff, students and community members. Although NPSD provides more opportunities for two-way communication than most school districts I know, our attendance and participation in these opportunities could be better.

The year ahead will be just as challenging as 2013. Labor contracts need to be negotiated, developing and maintaining a balanced budget will be a top priority, and we will start major renovations at Hatfield Elementary School. These efforts, plus the day to day work of our staff and students, are shaping up to be a busy 2014.

I look forward to another year as your Superintendent.

Sincerely,

Curtis R. Dietrich, Ed.D.
Superintendent, NPSD

NPSD Educational Foundation Awards Mid-Year Grants and Gears Up for a Successful 2014

The beginning of 2014 is very busy time for the North Penn School District Educational Foundation! The Foundation just announced the new grants that it will fund during the second half of the 2013-2014 school year. The Foundation sent a request to the entire North Penn staff to submit grant proposals for the Mid-Year Grant period. The Foundation met in early December to review the requests and decided to fund 25 grants, totaling $13,517.

Educators apply for grants that support and complement their subject area's curriculum and provide innovative ways for student engagement which leads to improved learning and comprehending. The variety of grants cover every curriculum area including special education, guidance, technology, science, ESL, math and history. The projects vary, but one thing is similar: everyone's enthusiasm and creativity for enriching students' lives. Each funded project not only enhances the curriculum but provide a hands-on and creative way for students to embrace and fully comprehend the lesson.

The entire North Penn community is invited to learn more about the Foundation by subscribing to the organization's newsletter. To view the latest issue, please click here. To join the Foundation's mailing list, please click here.

Bridle Path/Montgomery Select String Ensemble Performed in Chicago

The Bridle Path/Montgomery Select String Ensemble recently performed at the Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra Conference in Chicago, IL. The ensemble, which was invited to perform by audition, is the only elementary orchestra ever to be invited to perform during the 67 year history of the conference. This is the second time the orchestra has performed at this prestigious conference, the first time was in 2008.

The Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra Conference is the largest and most prestigious music conference in the world. The conference, which is held in Chicago, IL each December, is attended annually by more than 16,000 participants representing all 50 states and 30 foreign countries. The Midwest Clinic exists for educational purposes exclusively; to raise the standards of music education; to develop new teaching techniques; to disseminate to school music teachers, directors and supervisors and others interested in music education, information to assist in their professional work; to examine, analyze and appraise literature dealing with music; to hold clinics, lectures and demonstrations for the betterment of music education; and in general to assist teachers and others interested in music education in better pursuing their profession. In addition to the Bridle Path/Montgomery Select String Ensemble, performances were given by forty outstanding musical organizations from around the world.

The Bridle Path/Montgomery Select String Ensemble is comprised of 30 students in fourth through sixth grade from Bridle Path and Montgomery Elementary Schools, who are auditioned from among the 120 members of the Bridle Path/Montgomery Orchestra. Their director is Mr. Ralph Jackson.

Earlier this year, the ensemble received a special judges' citation from The American Prize national non-profit competition in the performing arts recognizing "Exceptional Accomplishment in String Education and Performance." The judges referred to the ensemble as "a bellwether group, showing what is possible when community, school and musical leadership are in apparent harmony."

Keystone Exam Process Explained in Upcoming Parent Information Nights

To help parents and guardians have a better understanding of the Keystone exams and the expectations for students, the NPSD will be holding two upcoming Keystone Parent Information Nights. During these information sessions, curriculum supervisors will review the curriculum and the academic program for secondary students that is aligned to Keystone expectations and the Pennsylvania Common Core. Presenters will also review the support given to students through additional academic programs to ensure success on the exams. Also, there will be a review of the various pathways for graduation success including Keystone readiness and state mandated project based assessment programs. Currently, NPSD secondary students take three Keystone Exams in Algebra 1, Biology and English Literature.

On Tuesday, January 21, an information session will be held specifically for parents of incoming seventh grade students and parents of elementary students in fourth through sixth grade. NPSD Holds Information Night Regarding 6th Grade Math Placement

The transition from the elementary to the secondary level can be confusing for both students and parents alike. There are often many questions regarding math at the middle school and high school levels. Therefore, the NPSD will hold a parent/guardian information night on January 29 to better explain the process and what can be expected as students progress from the elementary to middle school levels in this subject area.

The evening will include a presentation from Math Curriculum Supervisor Stephanie Schwab about the 6th grade math placement process and what it means for your child and a panel discussion with North Penn School District math teachers to answer any questions you might have about the process and future implications for your child's course of study in middle and high school.

The information night will be held on Wednesday, January 29 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Penndale Middle School. Penndale Middle School is located at 400 Penn Street in Lansdale.

For questions or more information, please contact NPSD K-12 Mathematics Curriculum Supervisor Stephanie Schwab at [email protected]
