Classroom Spotlight: Middle School Health and Physical Education Classes

The middle school Health and Physical Education curriculum encourages all students to enjoy an optimal quality of life. Teachers promote the appreciation of and participation in an active and creative, healthy lifestyle to students. Physical activity plays a large role in the health, well-being and quality of life of all students. It helps to prevent chronic diseases like cancer, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The new guidelines recommend a minimum of 60 minutes a day for children (ages 5-11) and youth (ages 12-17) to achieve measurable health

benefits. Adults are to aim for a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity a week. Students should try and surpass the minimum standards, since the greater the variety, intensity and duration of physical activity, the greater the health benefits.

During the winter months, NPSD middle school physical education classes are focused on "Lifetime Fitness" activities. All students at the middle school level will be tested in muscle strength, muscle endurance, cardiovascular endurance and flexibility.  In addition to fitness testing, all three grades will be participating in team volleyball and high impact functional fitness activities.

In the classroom, the Health curriculum will focus on physical, emotional, and mental health. The curriculum identifies real life issues that are affecting students' day-to-day lives as they continue to face both positive and negative issues that include leadership skills, decision making, peer pressure, alcohol abuse, dangers of tobacco use and substance abuse.

Dear Community,

Happy New Year! January is an important month for the school district as it is School Directors Recognition Month throughout Pennsylvania. It allows us time to highlight the work of the NPSD Board of School Directors who serve to ensure our students are well educated and that our schools are safe. The time and dedication that these nine individuals give our school district and community is immeasurable.

Not only do I know this because I have the opportunity to work closely with our school board, but also from my experience having served as a school board member in the Lehigh Valley in the early years of my career. I know firsthand the difficult decisions and challenges our school directors face on a daily basis. With each action they take, they use their expertise drawn from family life, careers, living in the North Penn community and belief in our schools.

I ask each of you to thank a school director this month for the time and effort they put into helping our schools. Thank them for the long hours spent at meetings and reading through paperwork. Thank them for listening to everyone's concerns. Thank them for continually serving every child, every day.

Sincerely,

Curtis R. Dietrich, Ed.D.
Superintendent, NPSD

Gwynedd Square Elementary School Teacher Named Teacher of the Year

Gwynedd Square Elementary School gym teacher Debra Buckner was recently awarded the Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year by the Pennsylvania State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, Inc. (PSAHPERD).

Buckner has been teaching Health and Physical Education for 35 years. She started working for North Penn School District in 1993 where she challenges her students, not only in physical education but also in other academic areas in order for students to make connections between everything they learn. She strives to help every student find joy in moving. She wants her students to feel safe, respected and challenged during gym class and encourages them to be active outside of school as well.

In one the nominations for the award, a student wrote, "You are an important staple to the school because you teach your students important lessons like sportsmanship and respect through creative games. You have inspired me to try my hardest and have taught me important things I will always remember."

Sixth Grade Math Placement Information Night

The transition from the elementary to the secondary level can be confusing for both students and parents alike. There are often many questions regarding math at the middle school and high school levels. Therefore, the NPSD will hold a parent/guardian information night on January 28 to better explain the process and what can be expected as students progress from the elementary to middle school levels in this subject area.

The evening will include a presentation from STEM Curriculum Supervisor Diana Garaitonandia about the 6th grade math placement process and what it means for your child and a panel discussion with North Penn School District math teachers to answer any questions you might have about the process and future implications for your child's course of study in middle and high school.

The information night will be held on Wednesday, January 28 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Penndale Middle School. Penndale Middle School is located at 400 Penn Street in Lansdale.

Bringing exceptional performances from around the world to viewers right here in Lansdale the Cultural Cinema Series is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

This month, North Penn Cultural Cinema Series Presents:

From Here to Eternity: The Musical
Friday, January 16 - NPHS Auditorium - 7 p.m.

Purchase tickets by clicking here or at the door. Adults are $5 and students are $3.

Pearl Harbor, 1941, where the girls sing "don'cha like Hawaii", the men of G Company sing the blues, and where even on an army base, love and desire are never very far away. When the troubled Private Prewitt falls for the kind hearted escort club girl Lorene, and when his platoon sergeant, Warden, embarks on a dangerous affair with his commanding officer's wife, Karen, the lives of both men are set on a course they cannot control.

As war approaches, the worlds of the four lovers and the soldiers of G Company are dramatically ripped apart. Sir Tim Rice's magnificent new musical From Here To Eternity is adapted from one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century; a gripping tale of illicit love and army life which translates in to a breath-taking, romantic and excitingly original show, set to join the front rank of great musicals.

North Penn Alumni Association Creates Career Database
One goal of the North Penn Alumni is to connect North Penn School District students with alumni in their prospective career fields. The association has begun to build this connection through events like NPHS College/Career Fair, but they need your help in expanding this program!

Any interested alumni are invited to fill out this form regarding their current career, past vocational experience and post-high school education. We will be compiling responses into a database available to all NPHS students through the Future Planning Center. Please note, the North Penn Alumni Association will not be sharing alumni contact information with current students.

This form will also ask if you are interested in speaking to students about your career. Speakers should feel comfortable speaking in classroom or large group settings. They will be scheduled periodically throughout the school year.

Thank you for your assistance in this very important endeavor!
