NPSD Artists Featured

at the Annual North Penn Gallery Art Show

nphs art show

The annual North Penn Gallery Art Show was held May 23 and May 24 and featured hundreds of pieces of artwork created by students from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Students, staff and community members were awed by this year's impressive show that featured a multitude of media from painting to photography to sculpture and more.

One of the most popular aspects of the show was the students who performed live demonstrations of their artistic skills, such as drawing and throwing on the potter's wheel as pictured above.

The Gallery also included the Senior Show which featured art work created by seniors who have taken three or more art classes throughout their high school years and included a special reception for these seniors, their families and friends.

In addition to the displays of art, the art/visual communication teachers from the district hosted a Gallery Store featuring hand-made items for sale. This fundraiser benefits the Senior Art Scholarship Fund and future art shows. Teachers and students donate their time and creativity to design these items. As part of this fundraiser for the art scholarship, Gallery at North Penn t-shirts were also sold and decorated.

In the evening art shows, musical performances from various elementary and middle schools including Hatfield, Oak Park, Knapp, Bridle Path, Montgomery, North Wales, Gwynedd Square, York Avenue, Pennfield and Pennbrook were held to delight the auditory as well as visual senses of the attendees.

The North Penn School District is very proud of all of the talented students that showcased their work this year and would like to thank all of the art teachers who have guided these students to reach their utmost potential through the expression of art.

NPHS Students Hold Nanotechnology

Presentation

North Penn High School (NPHS) seniors involved with the school's Engineering Academy held an exciting nanotechnology presentation on May 30 where they discussed the principles of nanotechnology, the development of polymer nanofibers through a process known as electrospinning, examples of products utilizing nanotechnology today and potential future applications.

During the presentation, students outlined and presented the research they performed in class and at Drexel University throughout this school year. The following is a brief sampling of the research topics from the 14 research teams this year: Piezoelectric fabrics, insulative properties of materials at the nanoscale, acoustic properties of nanofiber mats, antibacterial properties of composite nanofiber fabrics, nanofiber strength studies and water filter development and testing.

Following the presentation, there was also a poster presentation session for questions and answers and demonstrations of the research that the research teams have been performing throughout this school year.

Support the NPSD Educational Foundation Through Staff Tributes and the Annual Golf Classic

There are several ways for North Penn School District (NPSD) families, staff and community members to support the NPSD Educational Foundation now through the summer months.

For families looking for a way to recognize North Penn staff members who have made a difference in your child's life this year or throughout their time in the North Penn School District, the NPSD Educational Foundation has the perfect answer for you! The Foundation's "Staff Tribute Program" recognizes the important contributions teachers and other North Penn staff members have made in a child's life, as well as provides new educational opportunities not available through the school budget. At the end of the school year or when celebrating a child's commencement from high school, parents/guardians wish to show their appreciation to special teachers, principals or support personnel by offering a gift in the name of that special staff member to the NPSD Educational Foundation. This tax-deductible gift will be recognized by the Foundation and the staff member will receive a card informing him or her of your kindness. But that's not all! Your gift will be returned to the students of North Penn School District in the form of an "Innovative Classroom Project" grant awarded annually for new educational programs. To learn more about the NPSD Educational Foundation's "Staff Tribute Program" and/or to download a form,

please click here.

In addition to the End-of-the-Year staff tribute program, the NPSD Educational Foundation is inviting staff and community members to also participate in the 11th Annual Golf Classic scheduled for Monday, August 20 at PineCrest Country Club.

For interested golfers, the cost is just $120 per person and includes a luncheon, green fees, golf cart, awards and dinner. Registration and lunch begin at 11:45 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 1 p.m. and dinner, awards and prize drawings at approximately 6 p.m. To register as an individual or as a group, please click here. For individuals or businesses interested in becoming a sponsor, please view the various sponsorship opportunities available by clicking here. For more information, or to learn how to become a volunteer for the 11th Annual Golf Classic, please contact 215-853-1021.

The North Penn School District Educational Foundation was established in 1988 to raise funds for innovative and creative programs to improve NPSD students' over-all educational experiences. To date, the Foundation has funded more than $560,000 worth of grants. The North Penn School District administration, the North Penn Education Association and the North Penn Educational Support Personnel Association have endorsed this program and hope you will consider joining other NPSD families in this effort.

A letter from your Superintendent

Curt Dietrich

Dear Community,

In less than two weeks, the 2012 Class of North Penn High School (NPHS) will receive their diplomas and leave their high school years behind them. I am very proud of the approximately 1,000 members of this class, and they should take much pride in themselves as well. The world is theirs for the taking. Whether they decide to pursue higher education, serve their country or join the working world, this is the day for which they've been working extremely hard.

Commencement is also a time for celebration for the parents and teachers of these students who have also worked diligently. It's a day to celebrate not only the students' achievement but those who have supported and guided these young men and women through their school years. I hope our graduates will take a minute to thank the adults in their lives who have served as role models and mentors to them.

I hope too that the Class of 2012 will not forget their years at North Penn High School. In fact, I hope the tens of thousands of NPHS alumni will remember their alma mater and become more involved in our schools. To that end, over the summer you will see emphasis placed on better engaging NPHS graduates of the past 57 years. Efforts will include the updating of an alumni directory, the creation of an alumni e-newsletter and more.

Many of you reading this edition of North Penn E-Matters are graduates of NPHS. I urge you to take the time to become reconnected with your alma mater and school district, not just as a parent or community member, but as an active alumnus. Over the next few weeks, you will hear more information on this topic.

Again, congratulations to the class of 2012 and good luck with your future endeavors.

Sincerely,

Curtis R. Dietrich

NPSD Superintendent

NPHS is Recognized as One of the Best High Schools
in the Nation in Two Top Publications

In May, the North Penn School District (NPSD) was thrilled to learn that North Penn High School (NPHS) was named one of the top public high schools in the nation by Newsweek and The Washington Post's annual report, The High School Challenge.

Newsweek has been ranking the top public high schools in the United States for more than a decade. To compile the 2012 list of the top high schools in America, Newsweek reached out to principals, superintendents and other administrators across the country. In order to be considered, NPSD had to complete a survey requesting specific data from the 2010-2011 academic year including four-year, on-time graduation rate, college matriculation rate, Advanced Placements (AP)/International Baccalaureate(IB)/Advanced International Certificate in Education (AICE) tests taken per graduate, average SAT/ACT scores, average AP/IB/AICE scores and AP/IB/AICE courses offered. For more information on Newsweek's Top 1,000 list, please click here

Since 1998, The Washington Post's Jay Matthews has ranked Washington-area public high schools using the Challenge Index, his measure of how effectively a school prepares its students for college. In 2011, the Post expanded its research to high schools across the United States. For the second year, North Penn High School is one of only 29 schools in Pennsylvania to make the list.

The Washington Post explains the calculation as dividing the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or other college-level tests a school gave in 2011 by the number of graduating seniors. Also noted are the percentage of students who come from families that qualify for lunch subsidies and the percentage of graduates who passed at least one college-level test during their high school career, called Equity and Excellence, (E&E). For more information on The Washington Post's High School Challenge, please click here.

AP courses are college-level courses that are often the most advanced courses taught at the high school. The courses are academically challenging and can equal college credit and possible advanced standing for those who participate and do well on the AP exams.

"The North Penn School District has been focusing on increasing AP participation and testing as a measure of achievement for our students for the past several years now," said Burton T. Hynes, principal, North Penn High School. The total number of students participating in AP courses increased at NPHS from 166 in 1998-1999 to 601 in 2010-2011. In that same time, the number of administered tests rose from 284 to 1,217. For more information about AP courses and tests at North Penn High School, please click here

"Being recognized with these honors is a testament to the talent and dedication of the students and staff members at the high school, as well as to the district staff, who have worked to prepare our students for success at every school level," said Hynes. "I am extremely proud that we were named to the list and I have the NPSD staff, community, students and their families to thank."

NPSD Holds its 25th Young Authors' Conference

On May 12, the North Penn School District (NPSD) celebrated its 25th anniversary of the Young Authors' Conference with the theme of "Planting the Seeds of Success" at Walton Farm Elementary School.

Each year, the district sponsors the Young Authors' Conference, an event designed to inspire young writers at the elementary school level. Approximately 270 enthusiastic fourth and fifth grade students from all 13 North Penn elementary schools attended this event where they participated in various workshops presented by local experts in the fields of writing, publishing, illustrating and more. Each student that attended the Young Authors' Conference worked for months to author a book, which was published and displayed at the event.

In addition to various workshops, students also had the opportunity to interact with the energetic and comical children's author David Lubar, whose goal is to entertain, delight and surprise his readers.

Several students shared what they enjoyed most about the conference. "I loved how David Lubar talked about his life and how he became a writer. He told us how to start when coming up with ideas," said Walton Farm Elementary School student Madeleine Voss. Another Walton Farm Elementary School student, Karan Patel, said, "It was really fun doing the workshops and listening to David Lubar. I liked that he shared his whole life story." Ashwini Iyappan, another young author from Walton Farm Elementary School, said, "I enjoyed meeting friends from other schools in the district." The workshops were also enjoyed by all of the attendees as evidenced by Moira Shoush. "I liked the workshops best. Mr. Rodriguez's workshop was fun because he showed us a way that I can go online at home and write stories," she stated.

A big thank you goes to all of the elementary Home and School Associations, the elementary reading specialists and the Walton Farm Elementary School community for providing support for this special 25th anniversary Young Authors' Conference. NPSD Teacher Named 2012 Outstanding Doctoral Student

The North Penn School District (NPSD) is proud to announce that Dr. Donna DeTommaso-Kleinert, secondary English and English as a Secondary Language (ESL) teacher, has been selected as the 2012 Outstanding Doctoral Student from a doctoral program in Educational Leadership. DeTommaso-Kleinert received her Ed.D. in Educational Leadership through Grand Canyon University (GCU) and is being honored with this award by the Arizona School Administrators (ASA) organization.

DeTommaso-Kleinert's dissertation, entitled The Emotional Quotient Profile of Emergent Teacher Leaders, represented GCU and was then submitted to a panel to compete against dissertations from other doctoral programs across the state of AZ. "It is quite an honor to be selected as the outstanding doctoral student award recipient and I am excited to attend the conference this summer," said DeTommaso-Kleinert.

The research for her dissertation looked at the emotional intelligence of teacher leaders in comparison to non teacher leaders. It demonstrated that teacher leaders are significantly higher in certain areas of emotional intelligence in comparison to the non teacher leaders. Thus, emotional quotient is a competency and make-up of teacher leadership. Once DeTommaso-Kleinert created the emotional quotient profile of an emergent teacher leader, she then compared the emotional intelligence of emergent teacher leaders to both formal and emergent leaders in the business sector. The research indicates that emotional intelligence is a competency of emergent leaders and an area for growth and development of all teachers for effective leadership.

DeTommaso-Kleinert is looking forward to attending the ASA's summer conference from June 10-12 in Tuscon, AZ where she will be honored with a plaque at an awards luncheon and present her research on teacher leadership (emergent leaders) and emotional intelligence.

While in Harrisburg, Hegel, Simon and Viscusi professionally recorded their winning PSA and received award certificates. The PSAs will now be distributed to local radio stations. Click on the image below to access a video about this experience.

NPSD to Participate in E-Learning Summit

World class organizations, and those striving to be, are always studying the successes of others. To that end, leaders from the North Penn School District (NPSD) will be meeting with educators from the Republic of Korea to learn more about their experiences and accomplishments in the area of E-learning.

"The Republic of Korea has made significant advances in the area of internet technology, communication and E-Learning that has resulted in the Republic of Korea's educational system being recognized as a global leader," said Diane Holben, Ed.D., NPSD assistant superintendent. "We are extremely fortunate to be able to meet with them and learn from their experiences."

The summit will be held Tuesday, June 12 at the Educational Services Center of the North Penn School District. Invited participants include NPSD administrators, school board members, Alternative Revenue Committee (ARC) members, Montgomery County Community College (MCCC) representatives and a delegation from Korea. This delegation includes professors, a former officer from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, three to five companies specializing in E-learning and E-books, the Director of the Korean Education Center in New York, the General Consulate of the Republic of Korea and staff from the Korean Trade Association (KOTRA).

The goal of the summit is to allow NPSD and MCCC education leaders to learn about Korea's significant leadership in the area of education and E-Learning and to open the door of opportunity for Korean educational and knowledge partners. This E-Learning Summit would expand dialogue and discussions that will help further relationships, trade and knowledge transfer.

"We are very excited about this opportunity and hope to conduct a county-wide summit including all Montgomery County school districts in the fall," said Howard Reid, local businessman and member of the 21st Century America - Korea - China Leadership Society and Co-Chair of the North Penn Alternative Revenue Committee.

The summit is a joint partnership between NPSD, KOTRA, Montgomery County Community College and the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners.

North Penn School District Celebrates Reading

The North Penn School District (NPSD) celebrated its 21st year with the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) program. There are many activities that take place throughout the year through RIF for all of the first grade students in the district. There is a district-wide parent committee that coordinates the efforts of the district RIF program. This committee meets at regular intervals to share successes, resolve challenges and make suggestions that offer continuous improvement to the program.

There are three book distributions throughout the year at the first grade level: one in the fall, one in the spring and the final one in May or June. These book distributions are for the students' personal libraries. Each first grade student has the opportunity to select and own a book three times per year at no cost. Each school selects a character theme for the distributions and then plans special activities to promote reading in their school. Whenever possible, the themes and activities are tied directly to the curriculum. Activities include scavenger hunts, carnivals and skits with themes that often include book characters.

The first two book distributions are organized at each of the 13 elementary schools, with the help of parent volunteers and the building reading specialist. The third distribution is a district-wide play entitled "Alice Takes North Penn to Storyland." All first grade students, teachers, reading specialists and principals travel to North Penn High School for the presentation of the play that celebrates the importance of reading and literacy. Actors are comprised of community members, teachers, administrators, high school students and parents. This year, the show was held on Wednesday, May 30. Let the video below take you to North Penn's storyland.

The collaboration to provide the RIF programs are co-sponsored between NPSD and UGI.The RIF program in NPSD has inspired approximately 20,000 first grade students to love reading over the course of 21 years and is vital in preparing and inspiring children to read. The program provides free books and literary activities to children and their families. It combines the essentials to good reading - motivation, excitement and family involvement.

Become Engaged with NPTV's "North Penn Answers" Program

North Penn Television (NPTV) is pleased to feature a new "North Penn Answers" show. On this edition, host and member of the NPSD Board of School Directors Joe Sullivan and NPSD Board of School Directors President Vincent Sherpinsky discuss the proposed final budget for 2012-2013 that include such items as Health Care Initiatives, Inglewood Elementary School Renovations, Alternative Revenue Committee Efforts and Energy savings.

The purpose of the "North Penn Answers" shows is to help clarify misconceptions in the community and answer questions being raised on the district's website, via calls to the school district and at school board meetings. This show is based on the questions of North Penn residents and staff members and is the school district's effort at ensuring that the entire community hears a consistent and accurate message.

North Penn wants you to get involved in the production of the show! Community residents, families and staff members are all encouraged to watch the television series as well as submit questions for the show by emailing them to northpennanswers@npenn.org.

NPHS Teacher Throws First Pitch at NPSD Educators
Appreciation Night with the Philadelphia Phillies

The North Penn School District (NPSD) was excited to once again hold an Educator Appreciation Night for staff members and their friends and families at Citizen's Bank Park on May 11. Over 750 North Penn affiliates filled the stands of the ball park with their North Penn rally towels and cheered on the Philadelphia Phillies to a win! The evening included a North Penn tailgate with free water ice, courtesy of Tranzilli's Water Ice, and an opportunity for staff members to receive raffle prizes such as an overnight stay at the Loews Hotel in Philadelphia and participate in an on-field Phillies batting practice.

Due to the high participation of NPSD staff members, North Penn was selected as one of the organizations to throw out the first pitch. After completing a survey of North Penn-related questions, North Penn High

School health and physical education teacher Dave Franek was selected for completing every answer correctly. Franek represented North Penn well as he successfully threw the ball over the plate with great form. Check out the picture below and click here to read an article from The Knight Crier newspaper.

Innovation Celebration Earns Prestigious
Pinnacle of Achievement Award

The Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) has named Robert Schoch, NPSD Director of Business Administration, as recipient of its 2012 Pinnacle of Achievement Award for the outstanding Innovation Celebration held the past two years.

ASBO established the award in 1993 to honor the innovative spirit of school business officials and to recognize their contributions to the profession of school business management and the advancement of efficient school operations.

Innovation Celebration was held in 2011 and 2012. Hundreds of North Penn staff and community members attended these events that showcased innovative ways NPSD could raise revenues and decrease expenditures. Schoch and hundreds of North Penn employees were crucial in the success of this expo each year.

Congratulations to Mr. Schoch and the entire school district for this achievement.

Alternative Revenue Committee Update

Since December, the school board's Alternative Revenue Committee (ARC) has been researching new ways that the North Penn School District (NPSD) could raise revenues to support the students and programs of the district. Over the last month, the ARC made progress in the areas of advertising, fund development and the communication of NPSD's key financial issues.

First, the NPSD business office issued a Request for Proposals for school advertising on behalf of the ARC. The results of this process are currently being reviewed. Meanwhile, ARC members and district administration drafted a school board policy to allow for advertising inside schools and in outdoor facilities. This draft policy was discussed publicly at the May ECP board committee meeting and will be discussed at the June board work session.

In the area of fund development, the ARC met several representatives from the fundraising profession for input on how such a function could work in NPSD. Efforts that will take place over the next few weeks include beginning to develop an alumni data base and a plan to further engage these important stakeholders.

The ARC also met with two school groups over the last few weeks. By attending the Inglewood Home & School Association meeting and meeting with Coordinating Council representatives, ARC members were able to receive input for the advertising and development ideas, and also help to communicate the financial challenges that NPSD is facing.

Community members are strongly encouraged to attend ARC meetings to give their input and suggestions.

Hatfield Elementary School Students Present a
Wax Museum of Famous Pennsylvanians

Fourth grade students from Hatfield Elementary School presented a Wax Museum of Famous People of Pennsylvania. Each student had the responsibility of researching a famous person. They then wrote a report and dressed in costume portraying that character. The students wore a button, which they attached to their costume. As each visitor went by, they pressed the button and the wax figure student came alive and told their character's story. Each student had to memorize a famous quote that their famous person said.

It was a unique experience watching each child get into different poses and recite what they learned about their famous person. This activity was a huge success and the children really enjoyed themselves. Please click on the image below to view a video of some of these famous Pennsylvanians.

What's New in NPSD's School Nutrition Services Department

The North Penn School District (NPSD) School Nutrition Services (SNS) Department has several important announcements to share with NPSD families that can be viewed below.

Meal Prices

Great news! For the fourth consecutive year, the North Penn School District SNS Department is happy to announce that there will be no price increase for the breakfast or lunch meal for the 2012-2013 school year. However, there will be minor increases in à la carte prices. Look for the new menu and new price list on the NPSD SNS website by August 1, 2012.

New Point of Sale System

Beginning August 1, 2012, NPSD School Nutrition Services will no longer use the MySchoolBucks program  and will be implementing Point of Sale Software. Point of Sale Software is the program used to account for meal and à la carte sales, served either as cash or as a debit from the student account. The new software will provide increased accountability for meals served at the school level. It will continue to provide anonymity for free/reduced students while helping students move through the serving line much faster with more accurate accountability. The new system will show the student's ID picture which will provide secure and accurate accounting to the student's account. Please note: if there is money remaining in a child's MySchoolBucks account from this current school year, it will be automatically transferred to the Point of Sale Software for the 2012-2013 school year.

Free/Reduced Meal Applications

Please remember, a new school meal application must be submitted each school year even if your family qualified for free/reduced meals in the current or past year. The 2012-2013 school meal applications will be available on the NPSD SNS website by August 1, 2012. The 2012-2013 school meal application will also be available in the North Penn School District Back-to-School mailing. All 2011-2012 free/reduced eligibilities will expire in October 2012. Please be sure to submit the 2012-2013 family meal application before October 1, 2012.

North Penn Television News Update for May
