Tuskegee Airman Speaks at Pennbrook Middle School

2 18 14 Tuskegee Visit

In celebration of Black History Month, Pennbrook Middle School welcomed Dr. Eugene Richardson as a keynote speaker at a school assembly. Dr. Richardson was part of the Tuskegee Airmen.

The Tuskegee Airmen were dedicated, determined young men, who enlisted in

1941 to become America's first black military airmen. They came from every section of the country, each possessing a strong personal desire to serve the United States of America to the best of his ability. Most were college graduates or undergraduate who entered the armed forces and became single-engine or multi-engine pilots. They were trained at Tuskegee Army Air Field in Tuskegee, Alabama. Four hundred and fifty of the Tuskegee airmen served overseas during World War II.

NPSD's Reading Super Bowl is a Touch Down

More than 70 North Penn High School football players participated in the 10th annual North Penn Reading Super Bowl event. These readers visited all 13 North Penn elementary schools and read to more than 5,500 children in 234 classrooms across the district as part of
a reading incentive program.

Reading specialists at the elementary schools chose age-appropriate books for the football players to read to the students. This program fosters an interest in reading in the elementary students and allows the high school students to act as role models for literacy.

Dear Community,

Last month the district began its Comprehensive Planning Process for the Pennsylvania Department of Education that will ultimately end with school board approval of the NPSD Strategic Plan for the next three years. The plan that is being developed will guide NPSD in achieving its vision and mission.

Driving the process is a steering committee made up of students, parents, community members, teachers, support staff and administrators. There are five subcommittees that work independently in the areas of professional development and induction, special education, teaching and learning, operations, and technology. These subcommittees are charged with writing an overview and developing goals and action plans in their particular areas.

The community will be part of this important planning process not only through representation on the steering committee and its subcommittees, but through various formal and informal methods NPSD will use to gather your input. The first opportunity to review the special education portion of the plan will be at the Education/Community/Policy Committee on March 10 at the Educational Services Center at 5:30 p.m. It will also be posted online shortly thereafter for comment.

I encourage our entire community to work with us and give us your input as we develop this comprehensive plan for NPSD, our students and our schools.

Sincerely,

Curtis R. Dietrich, Ed.D.
Superintendent, NPSD

North Penn School District Holds Community Forum on Assessment Programs

Parents, guardians and community members are invited to attend a community forum where the focus will be the various types of assessments that are utilized with in the North Penn School District. North Penn School District Superintendent Dr. Curtis Dietrich and members the administration team will discuss the district's assessment programs and why it is beneficial to your son or daughter's educational program.

Assessments, whether it is a diagnostic test like the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) or a summative final exam, provide a way to measure a student's growth or mastery of the curriculum and skills taught. It provides the students and parents with feedback on the knowledge and skills their student attained as a result of instruction. Our staff evaluates this data to ensure that the instruction is aligned with the student's need and that their program best supports the individual student's growth and learning. This constant review of the data allows us to ensure that every child performs at, or above, grade level and is challenged to reach peak performance levels.

The community is invited to attend this free event on Monday, March 10, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at North Penn High School, 1340 Valley Forge Road in Lansdale.

All North Penn community members, whether they have children in NPSD schools, or not, are invited to attend this interactive and informative discussion. For more information on this free and important discussion, please click here.

NPSD Announces Changes to the 2013-2014 School Calendar

Due to two days missed in mid-February NPSD is adding two instructional days to the calendar as follows:

Monday, April 21, 2014, will now be an instructional day for students. It was originally a day off for students and staff.

Wednesday, June 18, 2014, will now be the last day of school. The original last day for students was Tuesday, June 17, 2014. June 18 will be an early dismissal for all students and June 17 will be a full day.

NPHS Graduation is moving to Wednesday June 18, 2014.

If additional make-up days are needed in the future Thursday and Friday, June 19 and 20 will be used.

As a reminder, these changes are in addition to revisions made to the calendar due to previous snow days. These upcoming changes are below:

Monday, March 31, 2014 will be a full instructional day for NPHS and middle school students. It will be an early dismissal day for elementary students, providing time for a limited number of elementary school parent/teacher conferences. This day was originally a day off for all students.

Wednesday, April 16, 2014 will now be a full day of instruction for all students. It was previously an early dismissal day for elementary, Northbridge and NPHS students and a full day for middle school students including sophomore orientation for 9th graders.

Thursday, April 17, 2014 will now be an early dismissal day for elementary, Northbridge and NPHS students. Middle school students will have a full day of school including sophomore orientation for freshmen.

Tuesday, May 20, 2014 (Election Day) will now be an instructional day for students. It was originally a day off for students and an in-service day for staff. Please note that district administration and school staff will work with the board of elections to ensure the safety of our students on this day. Measures include deploying extra security staff and changing the location of polling sites within the schools.

NPSD thanks parents, staff and students for their cooperation and understanding as we adjust the calendar. The negative impact on instruction and student achievement caused by the loss of these days is a serious concern to NPSD. Mastery of grade level content, Keystone Exam proficiency, PSSA proficiency and Advanced Placement results are at risk if our students do not receive the appropriate instructional time to succeed. NPSD staff members also need adequate time to prepare students. After considering all options, NPSD administration feels that adding days back into the calendar sooner rather than later is best for students.

Please watch North Penn Television (Comcast 28 and Verizon FIOS 29) and log onto www.npenn.org for further changes to the calendar in the event of snow days.

2013-2014 Superintendent's Honor Roll Awards Presented

The Superintendent's Honor Roll award is an annual event with nominations available to all full-time and part-time employees who have served at least three years in the North Penn School District.

Award winners are chosen for high job performance, personal impact within immediate job surroundings, personal impact on the entire district, positive professional relationships with other staff members, students, parents or the public, commitment to self-improvement and professional development, involvement with community activities promoting cultural, economic or social qualities of life, and activities and accomplishments that brought distinction to the employee and the district. Winners are chosen by an anonymous panel of NPSD employees.

This year, three deserving staff members were acknowledged with this award. Congratulations to Rosemary "Roe" Burbich, Cindy Danko and Barb Sturgeon.

Roe Burbich has been described as having an infectious enthusiasm that affects everyone she meets. She has been a teacher at Kulp Elementary School since 1993. Prior to her time there, she was a teacher at North Penn High School in the late seventies to early eighties. Several other schools throughout the district have benefited from Roe's teaching as she also worked at Montgomery, York Avenue and Hatfield elementary schools. The students, staff, district and community benefit from her hard work and dedication. Her co-workers described how Roe sparks her student's interest in art by teaching them about the renowned artists for the first time in their lives. She teaches the students that they, too, can become a future Picasso or Van Gogh by guiding them in creating amazing reproductions. When walking through the halls of Kulp, one is transported to the halls of the Louvre or the Philadelphia Museum of Art because of the beautiful student renditions of Starry Night or the Mona Lisa.

Cindy Danko has worked for North Penn School District since November of 1981. During this time, she changed the appearance of our classrooms, offices and hallways through her masterful painting while always being a hard worker who gets the job done, regardless of its size. She has been described as the unsung hero of the Maintenance Department. One of her co-workers said that Cindy sticks with a job until it is perfect. Her mentality and work ethic makes the finish product pure perfection. From the time she takes to prep a new job site to the detail she puts into a job, her work shows that Cindy is not one for short cuts. Her department appreciates Cindy's suggestions on future projects and problem solving.

Barb Sturgeon started working in the district in March of 1971. After a few years off to raise a family, she returned to Penndale Middle School in 1980 and has worked in the math department ever since. She currently serves as the math department chair at Penndale and is active in nearly every math related committee and activity at the school and district level. Some of her commitments include the Course Advancement Committee, Academic Challenge, Math Night, NPAGE, curriculum development, course scheduling, Math Team and PLC committees. These additional responsibilities and volunteer roles do not keep Barb away from the main reason she is an educator- to make a positive impact in the lives of our students. One of Barb's nominators said, "It would be difficult to find someone who has given more of themselves to the children of this community and the North Penn School District." Barb comes in early, gives up her lunch time or stays after school to work with a student, even if she does not have them in class.

Congratulations to this year's award winners. To view the presentation of each of the awards, please click here

NPHS English Department Held 2nd Annual Lit-Fest
The North Penn High School English Department held the second annual Lit-Fest on Wednesday, February 19. Lit-Fest is a celebration of literature highlighting the eleventh grade, Honors students' appreciation for and understanding of the scope of American Literature covered in the junior year curriculum.

Lit-Fest had several components including a dramatic reading contest, artwork presentations and a knowledge bowl. Students signed up individually to read selections of literature to the audience as part of the reading contest. The 11, 6.0 teachers kicked off Lit-Fest with each one delivering their own selected passage from an American author. Students created artistically inspired book covers and visual renderings for any of the works in the curriculum. Congratulations to Melissa Fuhr for winning the dramatic reading contest and Christian Aristizabal, Victoria Finley and Abi Natesh for performing an original song based on The Scarlet Letter.

At the end of Lit-Fest, each section of the 11, 6.0 classes competed as a team to answer questions in the Knowledge Bowl, with Mr. Manero's fourth period class being crowned the Lit-Fest Champions for 2014.

"Lit Fest requires kids to really dive into the text and choose a favorite passage, and when you prepare a reading, you really get your head around what that quote means and own that quote. To hear it spoken by a classmate or to prepare it yourself really makes that very powerful for kids," said Ellen McKee, NPHS English teacher. "I also think that it's powerful to have the teachers read their favorite quotes, as well. Sometimes we get caught up in testing, and we forget that we just love this literature. So to see your teachers do it as well, I think, adds to the atmosphere of academic excitement."

The Lit-Fest is made possible in part by a grant from the North Penn Educational Foundation. To see pictures of the event, please click here.

NPSD School Nutrition Services Participate in Programs to Promote School Breakfast

The majority of Americans feel breakfast is important, but hectic mornings make it difficult to fit the meal in every day. In fact, 40 percent of parents say that their child does not eat breakfast daily, according to a national survey. To garner increased participation in the School Breakfast Program, North Penn School District schools are participating in two breakfast appreciation events.

Earlier this year, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett and First Lady Susan Corbett issued a challenge to all Pennsylvania schools to increase participation in their school breakfast program.

Far too many students aren't getting the nutrition they need in school and when kids skip breakfast, it can affect their health as well as their ability to learn in school.

Schools that take part in the PA School Breakfast Challenge can receive technical assistance and equipment to improve their breakfast programs. The schools that see the largest gains in participation will receive cash prizes and other incentives when the challenge ends in the spring.

National School Breakfast Week, held March 3-7 2014, is a weeklong celebration aimed at increasing awareness of the School Breakfast Program among students and parents. The 2014 National School Breakfast Week theme, "Take Time for School Breakfast" encourages parents to consider the school breakfast program as a time-saving option for those busy mornings. The theme will appear in school cafeterias during National School Breakfast Week, March 3-7.

"Too many children are showing up at school hungry, and hungry children can't learn," said Pamela Gallagher, Coordinator of School Nutrition Services. "Eating breakfast at school can help families save time in the morning. And knowing that school breakfast is healthy and a great value is a huge relief for parents."

Cafeterias will promote school breakfast with special menus and decorations, activities and events all week. North Penn is inviting parents to join us for this special event. Information regarding the parent breakfasts will be available from your student's school.

Every school day, North Penn School District's breakfast program offers students a healthy breakfast that they need to get set for a busy school day. For example, we offer fresh fruit and hot breakfast sandwiches every day. Every school breakfast served meets federal nutrition standards limiting fat, calories and sodium.

NPHS Students Perform Well on Foreign Language Exam

Several North Penn High School students placed in the top level on the James Doyle Oral Proficiency Contest. This annual contest, held by the Montgomery County Association of Teachers of Foreign Languages (MCATFL) organization, provides a forum for students to measure their oral skills in a foreign language against students from other schools in Montgomery County. Individual interviews are conducted by foreign language professionals to determine which students are most proficient in the second language.

German student Amelia Hein came in second place in the German 3 category. Angela Hong placed first in the Japanese 01 category, Georgianna Eck placed first and Gayle O'Rourke placed second in the Japanese 1 category. Ha Eun Byun placed first and Anosha Ahmed placed second in the Japanese 2 level. Howard Chu took first place in the Japanese 3 category.

Congratulations to these students and teachers Noriko Coyle and Andrew Baker on their accomplishments.
