NPHS Holds Another Successful Knight of Arts for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS

2015 BC/EFA Night of the Arts
2015 BC/EFA Night of the Arts

NPHS Thespians hosted the 16th Annual Knight of the Arts Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA) Gala on Friday, February 20. Performances consisted of a variety of talented high school students singing, dancing, and acting. The Third Annual teacher lip sync dance featured Dominic Calamia, Nori Coyle, Jonathan Fluck, Deb Kriebel, Alex Vidal, Linda. Westerlund performing "America" from West Side Story. The number was choreographed by senior Alexa Duffy, vice president for Thespians, and sophomore Natalie Clauser, Thespians committee coordinator.

All three middle schools also presented production numbers from their musicals coming up in March including Pennfield, Penndale, and Pennbrook (Dakota, March 12-14.) Thespians from Pennridge High School brought the finale of Act I "One More Day" from their musical Les Miserables.

The evening also featured art demonstrations and Coffee House performances in the lobby before the show and at Intermission, and a silent auction and flea market of autographed souvenirs from the top Broadway shows. The profit from these activities, as well as direct donations from the large audience, helped the NPHS Thespians raise more than $1,900.

Added to the money raised earlier this year at the Pennsylvania State Thespian Conference, the students have raised more than $4,700 this year thus far. As of February 2015, NPHS Thespians have raised more than $73,000 since the first BC/EFA Gala in 1999. Students across the country raise over $100,000 each year for BC/EFA with the total raised in 16 well past the one million dollar mark. North Penn High School was the first school to hold a fundraiser for Broadway Cares.

NPSD Educational
Foundation Launches
Foundation February

This past month marked the first Foundation February, a district-wide fundraiser for the NPSD Educational Foundation!

Planned by Foundation student liaisons, Taylor Young and Erin Huebner, the month consisted of several spirit days and fundraisers at the elementary schools.

Nine elementary schools participated and helped to raise more than $5,000. A big thank you to the following schools and their Foundation February representative:

A.M. Kulp
Mrs. Lyons
Gwyn Nor
Mrs. Sailor and Mrs. Szuchan
General Nash
Mrs. Kratz
Gwynedd Square
Mr. Bowen
Hatfield
Ms. Hazzard
North Wales
Mr. Fickert and Mrs. Michener
Oak Park
Mrs. Bergman
Walton Farm
Ms. Kless
York Ave
Mrs. Moseley

All money raised will return to classrooms throughout NPSD. This year alone, the Foundation awarded 45 grants, providing over $28,240 in funding to NPSD classrooms. Grants cover every subject level for each grade level. These classroom projects not only enhance the curriculum but provide a hands-on and innovative way for students to embrace and fully comprehend the lesson. When NPSD educators apply for these grants, some think of how this experience will affect the student in the future. Science and technology grants allow students to understand theories at the next level of thinking. Other grants allow teachers to provide an experience that will benefit students socially and vocationally.

Dear Community,

Last week, Pennsylvania's newly-elected Governor Tom Wolf announced his proposed budget and addressed the Commonwealth in a speech that summarized his priorities. A major portion of his address focused on education, which he cited as the "core of everything else we want to achieve."

Wolf is calling to channel a significant amount of additional money toward public education. His plan calls for a five percent tax on the extraction of natural gas and increases in the personal income tax and sales tax as a means to increase basic education funding and reduce property taxes. There are also plans to make changes to charter school funding.

The state's budget is months away from being approved and there will be a great deal of debate during that time. It is difficult to say what the final budget will look like. Clearly, school funding will be given much due consideration.

Over the past several months I have been personally involved at the state level on the topic of Fair Funding and was asked to present my thoughts to a commission that will be proposing a new formula in the upcoming months. I feel it is very important to keep our community informed in this area as well. On Thursday, April 23, at 7 p.m. in the Penndale Middle School Auditorium, 400 Penn Street, Lansdale, NPSD will host a community forum for this purpose.

Already committed to speak at the forum is Tina Viletto, Director of Community and Legislative Outreach for the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit, who will give an overview of school funding in Pennsylvania. We have invited your state legislators to participate that evening and we will know shortly if they will be available to join us.

As done in previous successful community forums, I will act as moderator and will manage questions from the audience as well as the community who can view the forum live and post questions online. I will ask panel participants to respond to questions when appropriate. The issues we expect to discuss at the forum could relate to property tax, the funding formula, the state budget, and more. Legislators will listen to the community about their concerns and help explain their role in addressing the funding issues.

More information will be available about the Community Forum soon and I hope you will save the date for April 23rd.

Sincerely,

Curtis R. Dietrich, Ed.D.
Superintendent, NPSD

Hatfield Elementary School Receives $50,000 Grant

In December, Hatfield Elementary School was selected as a Reward - High Progress School for its high achievement as a Title 1 School under the state's School Performance Profile. This reward is now paying off in terms of a $50,000 Innovation Grant, a competitive grant designed to promote new learning structures and processes that meet individual student needs.

The funding will support four programs designed by Hatfield and district-level staff programs. These programs are focused on Title 1 students in grades Kindergarten through 3rd grade and include the following:

  1. An after-school program for the remainder of the year to improve literacy and numeracy skills.
  2. An after-school enrichment program to build academic vocabulary and background knowledge.
  3. A summer kindergarten readiness program for incoming kindergarten students to follow the English as a Second Language summer program for incoming kindergarten students.  It will give these students three weeks of instruction on literacy skills prior to the beginning of kindergarten.
  4. Professional development designed to assist teachers in implementing strategies to reach higher levels of analysis and application of concepts.

"We are very proud of Hatfield Elementary School, one of only 36 schools in Pennsylvania to receive a Reward grant to fund innovative programs and collaboration to improve practice," said Diane Holben, Ed.D. NPSD assistant superintendent. " With these funds, Hatfield students will have more opportunities to build academic vocabulary, background knowledge, and core literacy skills through additional intervention and enrichment programs. Many thanks to the Hatfield staff for collaborating to develop engaging, enriching academic supports for our students."

North Penn Alumni Association Creates Career Database
One goal of the North Penn Alumni is to connect North Penn School District students with alumni in their prospective career fields. The association has begun to build this connection through events like NPHS College/Career Fair, but they need your help in expanding this program!

Any interested alumni are invited to fill out this form regarding their current career, past vocational experience and post-high school education. They will be compiling responses into a database available to all NPHS students through the Future Planning Center. Please note, the North Penn Alumni Association will not be sharing alumni contact information with current students.

Thank you for your assistance in this very important endeavor!

Innovative Learning Experiences Occur throughout NPSD Thanks to NPSD Educational Foundation

Several learning opportunities funded through the NPSD Educational Foundation occurred throughout February. These grants-in-action covered topics varying from science and meteorology to literature and history.

In the beginning of the month, more than 250 students from grade four through six at Oak Park Elementary School learned to identify various elements of weather and the combinations of elements that cause various weather conditions through a program presented by the Franklin Institute. In the primary grades, students study weather but after this early exposure, they do not study the topic further. This presentation allowed Oak Park students to take this elementary knowledge and connect the new learning presented to heighten their understanding of weather. Click here for pictures of the assembly.

A few weeks later, sixth-grade students at Walton Farm Elementary School spoke with Ilse Lindemeyer, a Holocaust survivor. Students read about Lindemeyer in the book, The Number of Stars. This unique experience was  complemented by a 45-minute lesson co-taught by Lisa Bowen-Gotwals and sixth-grade social studies teacher Andrew Rodriguez about the Holocaust. Students also went home with the book, "I'm a Survivor."

In the last week of February, The North Penn High School English Department was held the Third Annual Lit Fest. Lit Fest is a celebration of literature highlighting the eleventh grade Honors students' appreciation for and understanding of the scope of American Literature covered in the junior year curriculum. The highly-coveted Lit Fest trophy continued its reign in Kevin Manero's room, as his sixth period class was crowned winner of Lit Fest 2015.

Lit Fest has several components including a dramatic reading contest, artwork presentations and a knowledge bowl. The teachers kicked off Lit Fest delivering their own selected passage from an American author. Click here for pictures of Lit Fest 2015.
