3-2-1 Blast Off!
Penndale Middle School Students Launch Rockets

Ninth grade students from Penndale Middle School learned about Newton's laws of motion in their science curriculum.

To supplement this learning process, the students have been working in pairs to create a power rocket out of a two-liter soda bottle and cardboard, which will then be powered by water and air pressure to create a rocket effect. Students explained how the rockets launch, accelerate and fall using Newton's laws. The students also used altimeters which measured the height of each rocket using air pressure sensors. Dear Community,

On Wednesday, May 7, NPSD will hold its third Innovation Celebration, and I encourage the entire community to attend. This expo-like event will once again feature innovative ideas, both implemented and yet to be approved, on how NPSD can cut costs, increase revenues and maintain our excellent programs. A new twist on the event this year is that other school districts and outside organizations have been invited to share their innovative ideas as well.

Hundreds of community members have come out to our Innovation Celebrations in the past. Past ideas that were part of these events include implementing of NPHS student parking costs, allowing advertising on NPSD property, the creation of the NPSD Alumni Association, energy usage curtailment and much more. The event itself has been recognized state and nationwide for its ability to showcase innovation and engage the school community.

To learn more about Innovation Celebration you can view NPTV coverage from previous years here. I hope to see you from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7 in the North Penn High School Cafeteria, 1340 Valley Forge Road, Lansdale for the Innovation Celebration.

Dream Big. Achieve Greatness.

Sincerely,

North Penn High School Earns National Recognition

North Penn High School received two well-deserved accolades this month as two national publications named NPHS in their listings of top schools. The publications are The Washington Post and US News and World Report.

For the fourth consecutive year, The Washington Post recognized North Penn High School as one of the top high schools in the nation in its annual report, The High School Challenge. North Penn High School is one of only 33 schools in Pennsylvania to make the list. It is ranked 1,746th nationally.

The Washington Post explains the calculation as dividing the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or other college-level tests a school gave in 2013 by the number of graduating seniors. Also noted are the percentage of students who come from families that qualify for lunch subsidies and the percentage of graduates who passed at least one college-level test during their high school career, called equity and excellence, (E&E).The Washington Post website goes on to say that while not a measure of the overall quality of the school, the rating can reveal the level of a high school's commitment to preparing students for college.

A few days after this recognition from The Washington Post, the North Penn School District received a notice that North Penn High School was named one of the top public high schools in the nation by US News and World Report. The high school ranked number 1,338 nationally and number 36 in the state of Pennsylvania.

US News and World Report evaluated more than 19,400 public high schools in 50 states and the District of Columbia. Schools were evaluated on overall student performance on state-mandated assessments, as well as how effectively schools educated their black, Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students. Schools were awarded gold, silver or bronze medals based on state proficiency standards and how well they prepare students for college.

North Penn High School received a silver medal and was one of more than 4,800 schools who earned a medal as part of their ranking. In the national rankings, 500 schools earned gold medals, 1,519 were awarded silver and 2,668 took home bronze.

"This recognition affirms the hard work of our students and our staff and exemplifies our philosophy of continuous improvement," said Burton T. Hynes, principal, North Penn High School. "The root causes of this success can be found in families who support education, elementary programs and teachers that build a strong foundation, middle schools that prepare our students well for the challenges of high school, a high school staff committed to excellence, and a school board that supports our programs and staff so that our students can maximize their potential."

NPSD Gallery of Art Opens in May

The North Penn Gallery Art Show opens to the public on Wednesday, May 28 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and reopens on Thursday, May 29, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Art work created by students from Kindergarten through 12th grade will be on display. The North Penn Gallery Art Show is an impressive show that features a multitude of media from painting to photography to sculpture and more. Students will also be on hand to demonstrate their artistic skills, such as drawing and throwing on the potter's wheel.

Additionally, the Gallery includes the Senior Show which features art work created by seniors who have taken three or more art classes throughout their high school years. It includes a reception for these seniors, their families and friends on Wednesday evening from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the art pod of North Penn High School.

Don't miss this wonderful experience. It is located in the K-pod concourse, gym and J-pod of North Penn High School, 1340 Valley Forge Road, Lansdale, PA 19446.

North Penn High School Theatre Program Stuns Community with Performance of Disney's Beauty and the Beast
The North Penn High School Theatre program continued its tradition of creating a high school production of the highest caliber with Disney's Beauty and the Beast. This year was no exception as North Penn community members came to "Be Our Guest" in the North Penn High School auditorium as they heard a "Tale as Old as Time" come to life through wonderful song and dance.

For the last several months, NPHS students have spent many hours of practicing and rehearsing, while balancing the daily demands of high school life. The hard work and dedication of these young performers and production staffers made this performance look routine but the community knew it was of the highest quality.

Congratulations to the whole NPHS Theatre department, students, staff and volunteers for another spectacular spring musical. Thank you to the North Penn community members who supported the show. The Sunday matinee was completely sold out; it was the first time the 1,700 seat auditorium has been sold out in over a decade.

NPSD Educational Foundation Thanks Community for Answering the Mayday Call for Help

The NPSD Educational Foundation would like to thank the North Penn community for answering the organization's Mayday call for help! The community's support of the Mayday Online Auction was overwhelming and helped the Foundation raise more than $3,500.

The organization congratulates all the auction winners and thanks each participant for their support. The Foundation also thanks all the NPSD departments that donated a "once-in-a-lifetime" experience to the auction. All golfers and golf enthusiasts are invited to PAR-ticipate in the NPSD Educational Foundation's upcoming golf outing on Monday, August 18 at PineCrest Country Club. For more information on the 13th Annual Golf Outing, please click here.

North Penn Television Announces Closed Captioning

The North Penn School District announced that Closed Captioning is now available on North Penn Television.

North Penn Television has deployed software from ENCO systems that uses a speech recognition engine to listen and transcribe audio from NPTV broadcasts in near real-time (typically four to six seconds).

Closed Captioning is a service for viewers who are hard of hearing, providing subtitles of all speech on television programming. Closed Captioning is provided on most commercial programming as required by the Federal Communications Commission, though it is not required on an Educational Access Channel such as NPTV. As an educational, non-commercial channel, NPTV is exempt from the closed captioning requirements.

Over the past several years, there have been requests from members in the North Penn community to provide a closed captioning service for NPTV. In the past, the cost of a closed captioning service was completely out of reach financially. With innovations in technology and using an automated hardware/software system, the system automatically generates captioning on live or recorded video. Utilizing this system, real-time, live captioning can be provided to our hard of hearing audience any time, without any advance notice and without the high costs of live captioners or signers.

Deploying this service provides more accessibility to all video programming to our community. Statistically, ten percent of the population has a hearing impairment. To view closed captions, press the closed captioning button on your TV or Cable remote control.

The speech recognition is about 95% accurate and will improve with current and historical script information to build a local dictionary which will allow the system to improve accuracy over time.

For more information on NPTV and closed captioning, please contact Bob Gillmer, Coordinator of Communications Media, at 215-853-1033. NPTV is available to all cable subscribers on Comcast channel 28 or Verizon channel 29.

North Penn High School's Student Government Association Receives National Award

For its exemplary record of leadership, service and activities that serve to improve the school and community, North Penn High School Student Government Association (SGA) has been awarded a 2013 National Gold Council of Excellence Award by the National Association of Student Councils (NASC).

"Receiving an NASC National Gold Council of Excellence Award reflects the highest dedication on the part of the local school to providing a strong, well-rounded student council program," says Ann Postlewaite, Director of NASSP Student Programs. "NASC applauds the work of the National Gold Councils of Excellence and challenges them to continue their leadership and service to their schools and communities."

To meet the requirements for the NASC National Councils of Excellence Award, a student council must demonstrate that it meets a variety of criteria. Those councils named to the gold level have successfully met a greater number of the criterion. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings, a democratic election process, and membership in NASC, schools that qualify for the award demonstrate such things as leadership training for council members, teacher/staff appreciation activities, student recognition programs, school and community service projects, sprit activities, goal setting, financial planning, and active participation in their state and national student council associations.

"Once again, North Penn High School is pleased to have our student council recognized by the NASC with their highest award for excellence," said North Penn High School Principal Burton T. Hynes. "This recognition honors the tireless efforts of our student leaders and their advisers to promote a climate of enthusiasm, engagement, and service to others."

"It's an incredible honor to be named a National Gold Council of Excellence for the third consecutive year," said North Penn SGA adviser, Kyle Berger. "It speaks to the quality of student leaders we have here at North Penn. Our Student Government has been highly motivated to provide school-wide activities and service projects that bring our students together, and it's great that our students are being recognized again for their efforts."

"We're really happy to be named a National Gold Council of Excellence," said North Penn SGA President, Patrick Zancolli. "It's a very prestigious award, and it means that we are one of the top student governments in the country."

The National Association of Student Councils (NASC) promotes and provides leadership development opportunities to prepare and empower students to serve their school and communities. NASC is a program of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). The NASSP - the preeminent organization and national voice for middle level and high school leaders - also sponsors the National Honor Society (NHS) and the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), which recognizes outstanding middle level and high school students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character.
