Save the Date for Upcoming Community Conversation with the NPSD Superintendent

The North Penn School District (NPSD) and NPSD Superintendent Dr. Curt Dietrich are excited to once again offer its families and community members the opportunity to speak one-on-one about important issues involving NPSD schools. Community Conversations, a series of informal meetings, gives attendees the chance to talk freely with Dr. Dietrich and share their concerns and suggestions for the North Penn School District.

In addition to addressing participant concerns, Dr. Dietrich will give summarized updates on school district news and ask for feedback and input on important district issues while allowing time for open questions from parents/guardians and community members. NPSD is working on multi-year solutions that focus on student success, staff development, financial security and a safe, healthy and orderly environment.

Save the date for the next Community Conversation scheduled for Monday, November 27, 2014 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Educational Services Center, located at 401 Hancock Street in Lansdale. To view the dates, locations, and times of the remaining Community Conversations of the 2014-2015 school year, please click here. North Penn High School Theatre Presents

Once in a Lifetime

North Penn High School Theatre is pleased to present the hilarious comedy Once in a Lifetime by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart on November 20, 21, 22 at 7:30 p.m. and a Sunday matinee on November 23 at 2 p.m.

It's 1927 and Al Jolson appears in the first talking motion picture sending Tinsel Town into a frenzied search for "scenarios" that can exploit the new sound technology. Audiences want talking pictures and by gum Hollywood is going to make them - and make them now - no matter how bad they might be! Enter three vaudevillians who want to find fame and fortune in the evolving movie industry.

Through a series of zany coincidences, the three entertainers convince the studio brass that they have the formula for making blockbuster hits: Teach the silent actors how to speak. Of course, not content with their vaudevillians and an egotistical movie executive, Kaufman and Hart also add into the plot a young starlet (who can't act) and her meddling stage mother; a headline-stealing gossip columnist; a star-struck receptionist; a duo of movie divas with Brooklyn accents; inept directors and screenwriters; and scene-stealing extras (not to mention two thousand airplanes!). The result: This uproarious satire of the movie business with celebrity power matched against artistic integrity - themes that still ring true today. (If the plot sounds reminiscent of Singin' in the Rain, well there are similarities between the shows only Once in a Lifetime has no singin' and no rain. But it has plenty of laughs!)

The cast of twenty-eight sophomores, juniors, and seniors is working with another group of over forty costume, set, sound, and lighting students who are recreating the end of the "Roarin' Twenties".

While looking forward to sharing their work with the surrounding communities, the students are also eagerly anticipating touring the production to Central York High School where it will be presented on December 5 as part of the 2014 Pennsylvania State Thespian Conference. Presenting one of the five full-length Main Stage productions at the Conference is an honor. Once in a Lifetime represents the sixth North Penn High School Theatre production that has been presented at the Conference in the past eight years.

Tickets are on sale now for $10 (Adults) and $5 (Students). Gold and Silver Cards will be honored at all performances, and tickets must be ordered by mail or purchased at the door.

New this year is an on-line ticketing. To avoid on-line fees, tickets can also be purchased using ticket forms which can be downloaded, and submitted by following the instructions. Tickets will also be available at the door. For more information, please call (215) 853-1352.

This is a Once in a Lifetime chance to experience the fun and glamour that was Hollywood in the 1920s! Don't miss it!

Dear Community,

This week North Penn residents should receive the North Penn School District's Annual Report for the 2013-2014 school year in their mailbox. Titled "Student Focused for Success," the 16-page booklet highlights NPSD's accomplishments for that year.

Every year when I read the annual report I am reminded of the everyday greatness that occurs in our classrooms. Our students and staff have much of which to be proud. From academic achievement to community service to operational excellence, NPSD continues to shine.

I hope you will take a moment to review the annual report. An interactive online version with videos, event photo albums and even more details is available online.

Sincerely,

Curtis R. Dietrich, Ed.D.
Superintendent, NPSD

NPSD Board of School Directors Settle with Support Staff Union

The North Penn School District (NPSD) and the North Penn Educational Support Professionals Association (NPESPA) have agreed to a contract through June 2017. The NPSD Board of School Directors approved the contract with the support staff union at a special action meeting on Monday October 27.

"Although members of this bargaining unit have been working since July 1st without a contract, their commitment and dedication to NPSD and its students remained constant," said Curtis R. Dietrich, Ed. D. NPSD Superintendent. "I am very pleased that we have reached a contract with NPESPA that's fair to both its members and our community."

Employees who are represented by NPESPA include secretaries, instructional assistants, specialists and staff nurses. The agreement includes a 2.5 percent salary increase in the first two years of the contract and a 2.75 percent increase in the third year. The 2014-2015 salary increase is effective November 1, 2014.

NPESPA also agreed to changes to the school district's core healthcare plan which NPSD administration and non-unionized support staff already agreed to this past summer. The plan includes increased premium costs and deductibles. It will take effect March 1, 2015 for NPESPA members.

Prior to this year, deductibles were never part of NPSD's health care plan. Still the deductibles are significantly lower than what is found in the private sector. The health care plan accepted by three of NPSD's employee groups and being recommended to all staff includes a $200 maximum deductible per year for each employee and $200 per dependent ($600 maximum deductible per year for families larger than three total members).

"The school board appreciates very much the willingness of the North Penn Educational Support Professionals Association to partner with the district in managing health care costs," said Vincent Sherpinsky, president, NPSD Board of School Directors. "As fringe benefit costs such as health care and pensions continue to rise, the cooperative spirit as evidenced in this reasonable contract settlement will assist the district in maintaining a financially secure position into the future."

NPSD continues to negotiate with the North Penn Education Association (NPEA), the union representing teachers. That contract expired June 30, 2014.

NPSD Invites Community to Celebrate American Education Week

The North Penn School District's observance of American Education Week presents parents, grandparents, family and friends with a wonderful opportunity to celebrate public education and honor individuals who are making a difference in ensuring that every child receives a quality education.

Kicking off the week of celebrations, the NPSD is hosting the "Bus to the Future" on Friday, November 14. Open to all community members, this ride tours NPSD schools and allows community members to see firsthand the important contributions that the North Penn School District is making to ensure the community's future by providing the very best educational opportunities to its students.

The day begins at Pennbrook Middle School at 8:30 a.m. where opening comments, a brief tour and a light breakfast will be served. The next stop will be Montgomery Elementary School from 10 to 10:45 a.m., followed by a ride through the NPSD Bus Garage from 11 to 11:05 a.m. The "Bus to the Future" will stop for a tour of North Penn High School from 11:10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Then, passengers will finish out the day at the North Montco Technical Career Center from 12:20 to 1:45 p.m. where a tour will take place and lunch will be served. Snacks and refreshments will be provided throughout the day. To register for Bus to the Future, please call 215-853-1032 by Friday, November 7.

Parents and guardians are invited to observe their child's class throughout the week of November 17 to November 21. Schools have sent home flyers with specific visit dates and times. Since these are regular educational school days for your children, each school will continue to preserve the integrity of our classroom instruction. We ask that you make babysitting arrangements for your pre-school aged children while you are visiting our classrooms so that minimal interruptions occur during the instructional day. Please remember your child's teacher will not be able to discuss individual students at this time.

When you visit your child's school, please sign in at the main office and obtain a Visitor's Badge. As always, you will need a government issued ID to enter the school. For questions regarding an individual school and their schedule for American Education Week, please contact the building principal.

North Penn High School Welcomes German Exchange Students

North Penn High School welcomed students from Germany as part of the International Friendship Committee exchange. Over 40 students from Salzgitter and Aalen stayed with North Penn families for two weeks. The German students attended classes and NPHS events including the Homecoming football game and dance.

"A great benefit of the program is that both the German and American students got a chance to develop long lasting trans-Atlantic friendships which were hoping continues when our students visit Germany-based partner schools this summer," said NPHS German teacher Mr. Andrew Baker. "Its a chance for students on both sides to get a better view of what each of us is all about rather than through Hollywood movies or textbooks."

NPHS has had an exchange with the school in Salzgitter for the past 52 years. The relationship in Aalen is also long established at 32 years. For more information on the students' trip and their perspective on American schools, visit the Knight Crier.
