  •  Use your voice, body and presence to bring your stories alive.
  •  Craft your keynote based on the emotions you want your audience to feel, not just your words.

Prospecting Tips for a Slow Economy

 by Patricia Fripp, CSP, CPAE

Patricia Fripp was one of our fabulous program speakers in 2009.
Here she shares points of wisdom on growing your business.

Frippicisim: It is not your clients' and prospects' job to remember you. It is your obligation and responsibility to make sure they don't forget you.

1. Don't overlook the obvious. Go through your address book, data base, Christmas card list and confirm everybody you know is familiar with your profession, what your specialty is, and who is the perfect prospect for you to best serve.

2. If you used to work in another industry, update your satisfied clients that you can still serve them in this different capacity.

3. Keep in touch with your present clients more frequently. Not just asking for referrals. The better your relationship with them the more they will want to send you new prospects.

4. One of my friends in the advertising specialty business had a very creative office decor. Anyone who had seen it raved about it. Going up in the elevator of his building of 22 floors I had a conversation with a fellow passenger. I asked, "Do you work in this building or are you visiting?" He mentioned he had worked there for 2 years. I inquired if he had ever heard of my friend Jonathan and his unique and memorable office. He said "No." My recommendation to my friend and everyone else who works in a large building is to every few months go from floor to floor, office to office, and introduce yourself to your neighbors. You could well quadruple your business close to home.

5. Don't forget to work on your sales presentation skills!

Rolling into the New Year with NSA Virginia

We definitely finished the 2009 calendar year on a major high note at our December 11 chapter meeting in Chesapeake with David Meinz, CSP!  David explained his major learnings from taking his business from $9,000 a year to over $500,000 so that we can all avoid the pitfalls and accelerate our own success stories.  His practical, specific advice was memorable and immediately useful.  An extra treat was his timeline of humorous and serious events from our chapter's early years, including the run up to chapter status, his first year as president, and Harold Wood's "three-year dictatorship."

Let's keep up the momentum by promptly paying our chapter dues in January and attending the January 15 event in Richmond with Dr. Marcia Reynolds, CSP, MCC.

The January event will also be attended by members of the International Coach Federation, Greater Richmond Chapter, so please welcome them and show them our trademark hospitality and vibrant program opportunities.

Register today at www.nsavirginia.org.

Happy New Year and see you soon!

Warm regards,
Tom

Steve Kissell, Hope Mihalap, and Harold Wood, our chapter's three Emeritus Members, were onhand for the December 11th unveiling of the Emeritus Award re-branded, now known as the Founders' Legacy Award (see more below  for descriptions of chapter awards and their criteria).  They were "toasted" by Past-President Sandy Dumont, President-Elect Cathy Lewis, and Past-President Gloria Thomas, respectively, and they each shared stories about the chapter's history and the value of NSA to their careers.  In addition, Harold stayed for the afternoon to conduct his legendary feedback coaching for the ProTrack class.  Thank You!  We are a strong chapter because our leaders gave us their able shoulders to lift us up to be more than we would be without your legacy!

Tom Davidson, our Chapter President, did a great job putting together the programs for our development during Fall 2009.   We're excited to see the lineup for Winter/Spring 2010. Thanks, Tom, for the great variety and quality of speakers you've found for us!

Awards To Recognize Members' Contributions

President's Award

The "President's Award" is bestowed upon Chapter Members who have contributed outstanding service during an event or within a particular service area in support of NSA Virginia during the current year.  Selection is at the discretion of the Chapter President.

Chapter Member of the Year Award

The "Chapter Member of the Year" is awarded to the Chapter Member who has consistently contributed outstanding service to the chapter in multiple ways during the current year and is also deserving of national NSA recognition.  Selection is at the discretion of the Chapter President.

Founders' Legacy Award

In honor of the chapter's founders, the "Founders' Legacy Award" (formerly the "Members Emeritus" award) is reserved for Chapter Members who have provided exceptional service to the development of the chapter over a number of years.  Recipients must be shown to have a history of consistent service and to have demonstrated commitment to NSA's founding vision.*  Chapter Members may submit written nominations to the Board by April 15 of any given year, describing how the member has distinguished himself/herself in this way.  Selection is made periodically by unanimous vote of the NSA Virginia Board.

* NSA's founder, Cavett Robert, CSP, CPAE, had a vision for an organization where professional speakers could convene to improve their presentations, exchange ideas and share experiences. He felt that everyone involved in the speaking profession would benefit from growing the number and quality of professional speakers. He referred to it as "making a bigger pie."

$ Are You Limiting Your Income for 2010? $

By Laura Posey

It is planning time again! This time of year many of us are looking back at the past year and deciding what we are going to do for the next year. It is a time of reflection as well as a time to get excited about what the future holds.

I spend a lot of my time in December helping clients get strategic plans for the coming year in place. Each time I work with a new client, I am surprised at the way many of them have been to taught to plan and how those teachings keep them earning far less than they are capable. Here is one of my top suggestions for planning for 2010.

Planning your business properly is much like planning a long car trip. If you were headed out on a long vacation, the first thing you would do is decide where you wanted to go. That is, you'd look far out into the future and pick your destination.

Sadly many business people have been taught to plan based on where they have been rather than where they are going. To determine this year's sales goals, they look back at last year, add a small percentage of growth to those numbers and declare the new number to be their goal.

The worst part of this type of thinking is its crushing blow to creativity. When you look backwards to plan your growth your brain starts to think, "well, all I have to do is a little more of what I've done and I'll hit the goal." There is no need to be creative, to think of new avenues for revenue generation. You can simply work a little harder and make your numbers and your brain knows it.

If you want to grow significantly, you have to look out five, ten or even twenty years and figure out where you'd like to be, then work backwards from there to determine next year's goals.

For example, I was working with a client a few weeks ago who has a million dollar company. When I asked what he thought he wanted to accomplish in the next year he said $1.3 million in sales. After going through an exercise and determining that he really wanted to be a $10 million company in the long run, he decided he wanted to do $2 million in sales in 2010.

What is interesting about this process is that once you set a high goal for the next year, your brain immediately starts to work on how it is going to get there. New ideas suddenly pop up and your creativity really kicks into high gear. You see opportunities that didn't exist with the smaller goal. Your brain is a problem solving machine and if you give it a big enough problem, it will access all of its resources to solve it.

If you are starting your planning process now, begin with the end in mind, as Stephen Covey says. Look forward and choose your ultimate destination, then pick a point somewhere along the road to shoot for this coming year. You'll be amazed at the results you can achieve if you strive for them.
