Summer Debate Season

This week we celebrate our Harlem and Manhattan Summer Debate Institutes! The first week of July featured the Harlem Summer Debate Institute at Columbia University. The Institute featured a field trip to the NY Historical Society, Central Park, Mummy Wraps, and lots of debates! Click here for the Tournament Photo Album and click here for the Summer Camp photo album. And click here for the complete results from the NYC Summer Debate Tournament #1!  Last week featured our largest summer debate program - The Manhattan Debate Institute for High School Students at the Silberman Graduate School of Social Work and the Middle School and Elementary School Debate Institutes at Hunter College. We thank the countless volunteers, instructors, teachers, students, parents, family members, colleges and our supporters for making these programs possible. Because of your support over 200 students participated in debate institutes over the past two weeks .... and we have five more weeks to go!

Linda

"I am a first year college student at Simpson College in Iowa. I am enrolled in the Criminal Justice Masters degree program and majoring in Psychology. My career goal is to be a Profiler for a federal agency or a psychologist for a federal agency. Debate has given me the tools to be able to speak in public and do extensive research on any topic or argument that I use for my papers in college. This has boosted my confidence to even start my own club on campus." - Linda Ramseur, NYCUDL Alumni and College Sophomore at Simpson College

Linda is a College Sophomore at Simpson College in Iowa and NYCUDL alumni.  She was a top debater for ACORN Community High School from Fall 2012-Spring 2016 and also served as a volunteer judge for middle school and high school debates all four years.  Linda is continuing debate in college with the Parliamentary and Mock Trial Debate Teams and also starting a Policy Debate Team at her school to compete on the CEDA level. Linda was selected as an Alumni Ambassador for the National Association of Urban Debate League's Championship Tournament last spring. This summer we are honored that Linda is joining us as a lead summer debate instructor.

Congratulations Linda to all of your accomplishments and many more to come! Thank you and honored to have you at summer debate camp!
David Hartman
"I am a 7th Grade ELA teacher with a passion for helping students to use language effectively. I studied Philosophy at Hamilton College, worked as a community organizer before Barack Obama made it cool, worked at legal assistance not-for-profit organization, and then decided to use my talents to become a teacher. I've always loved and appreciated the sport of argument, and I especially enjoy helping others to craft their own writing." -   David  Hartman, Teacher (National Board Certified) and Debate Coach at the Columbia Secondary School

David was also a member of his high school's debate team. He has come full circle and now teaches debate, public speaking, and philosophy to both middle school and high school students.

Thank you David for building an incredible debate program at your school and now joining us at Summer Debate Camp to share your passion for debate with countless other students!  Thank You!
Anuj Gupta
Our volunteer shout out this week goes to Anuj  Gupta who has an incredible passion for debate and volunteered at both the Harlem and Manhattan Summer Debate Institutes!

"I will be attending Columbia University this fall. I've debated Lincoln Douglas for 4 years at Roslyn High School. I was captain of the team for two years, where I built our national circuit debate program from scratch. I've made PowerPoints, ran drills, shown students how to effectively research, and given students the tools with which to build cohesive arguments and strategies. I've had students go far at several prestigious tournaments (Yale, Harvard, New York State Championships) and have had a lot of positive feedback from the community. I've competed at several tournaments on the national circuit and have broken twice at the NYSFL State Championship tournament. I also qualified to the NCFL national tournament my senior year. Aside from debate, I love music, reading, and playing basketball." - Anuj Gupta

Nelson Manela
"A good leader can engage in a debate frankly and thoroughly, knowing that at the end he and the other side must be closer, and thus emerge stronger. You don't have that idea when you are arrogant, superficial, and uninformed." - Nelson Mandela

This week we celebrate the birthday of Nelson Mandela (July 18th 1918- December 5th, 2013). Civil Rights Leader, Anti-Apartheid Crusader, first Black and first democratically elected President of South Africa, Nobel Peace Prize Winner (and winner of 250 other honors), philanthropist... and he was on his school's debate team!

In today's political world, Mandela's words like "wisdom, "modesty," "respect," "empathy," and "understanding" are foreign to many of our political leaders and replaced by the very dangers stated by Mandela of arrogance, superficiality, and disinformation.  We need a Nelson Mandela more than ever who puts social justice first and foremost - even before himself... Here was an individual willing to sacrifice a lifetime in prison for his beliefs.  Read more about Nelson Mandela and how debate impacted his life, by visiting us at our Great Debaters Blog!
