As we "March" up to Earth Month, we have some exciting developments to share from the last few weeks. We have been working hard to bring you the NYC Climate Justice Agenda, which will be released on Monday, and added a new person to our team. Stay tuned!

The New York City Environmental Justice Alliance (NYC-EJA) will be releasing our report, The NYC Climate Justice Agenda: Strengthening the Mayor's OneNYC Plan, on Monday.  

NYC-EJA developed The Climate Justice Agenda as a policy framework to analyze OneNYC and other City resiliency plans for their "climate justice" impacts - and to recommend further action to help build a healthier, more equitable, climate-resilient City for vulnerable, low-income communities and communities of color. In addition to analyzing OneNYC, this report lifts up community-based, climate justice initiatives, spearheaded by NYC-EJA members and allies, that complement and in some cases even exceed OneNYC's goals.

Where does NYC's commercial waste go? 

At home, your trash gets picked up by the city. But what about at your local bodega or favorite restaurant? Who picks that trash up? Where does it go? And why should we care?


The Center for Urban Pedagogy collaborated with ALIGN, the Transform Don't Trash Coalition, and animator Cole Hannan to shed light on the dirty secrets behind NYC's commercial waste. This short animation follows a discarded milk jug on its journey from trashcan to landfill, exposing the impacts the current commercial waste system has on workers, community members, and the environment.

SOMOS Albany Spring Conference

The SOMOS 2016 Spring Conference took place from Friday, March 18th to Sunday, March 20th in Albany, New York. Community and government leaders convened to discuss the increasing importance of Latinos in politics, especially this election year. 

NYC-EJA's Director of Research, Juan Camilo Osorio, spoke on a panel within the Legislative Session titled Environmental Justice in New York and Puerto Rico. He emphasized the need for community resiliency to be a comprehensive response to all climate change impacts.
Annel Hernandez, Community Organizer
New Team Member

Annel Hernandez  recently joined the NYC-EJA family as our Community Organizer. 

She p reviously, as Research Assistant with the Urban Climate Change Research Network at Columbia University's Earth Institute, where she collaborated with scholars, experts, and advocates on pushing  forward new climate change resources for cities. Annel also worked in the NYC Mayor's Office as Social Innovation Fund Advisor managing the program implementation of a multi-city initiative focused on economic opportunity programs, and was also a NYC Urban Fellow. Annel received an MPA in Energy and Environment from Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, where she also worked as a Teaching Assistant at the Earth Institute and a Research Assistant at the Institute of Latin American Studies. She received her BA in Political Science and Latin American & Latino Studies from Fordham University.

Paris 2015 Climate Conference Lecture Series at Pratt Manhattan

Last in the series of public discussions on the  outcomes of the Paris 2015 Climate Conference and the implications for grassroots organizations and frontline communities.

Building on the previous two panels, this final session will focus on  developing an agenda for action. In particular, what is the role of community development and the community design professions in addressing climate change?
