NYCOMEC Receives STAR Award

NYCOMEC is the recipient of the American Osteopathic Association's Strategic Team And Recognition (STAR) Award, which was presented at the Awards Ceremony Luncheon at the AOA Annual Business Meeting in Chicago on July 23, 2016. The STAR awards recognize 
osteopathic organizations that advance the osteopathic profession. NYCOMEC was  recognized in the category of Promoting Osteopathic GME Growth. 

James Swartwout, AOA Senior Vice-President of Education, Accreditation and Research Departments, presented the award and spoke of the innovative activities initiated by NYCOMEC which contributed to the accreditation of 21 new osteopathic GME programs and launched targeted efforts to promote Osteopathic Recognition (OR) under the single accreditation system. 

Initiatives include an OR awareness campaign, including faculty development programs on achieving OR, support materials to assist with the application process, a new webinar series on osteopathic medicine, newsletter updates, and new opportunities for osteopathic scholarly activity for faculty.

96th AOA Annual Business Meeting 

The 96th Annual Business Meetings of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), the national professional membership organization for the nation's more than 104,000 osteopathic physicians and osteopathic medical students, took place on the week of July 17-24, 2016, in Chicago, IL, at the  Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile Hotel

The Annual Business Meeting of the AOA Board of Trustees (BOT) began on Tuesday, July 19 and concluded Thursday, July 21, while the AOA House of Delegates (HOD) convened its annual meeting Friday, July 22, and concluded its sessions Sunday, July 24. 


The NYCOMEC member institutions were represented by the following: David L. Broder, D.O., Barbara A. Capozzi, D.O., Kym M. Carpentieri, D.O., Martin Diamond, D.O., Dennis J. The AOA House of Delegates met to create important AOA policies on diverse issues such as physician burnout, medical student finances , student loans, GME funding, substance abuse disorders, physician collective bargaining, eliminating abuse of the ACA grace period, physician-led team-based care, and concussion treatment.  To read more, please click here.
Dr. Broder Reelected as Vice Speaker of AOA House of Delegates

David L. Broder, D.O., NYCOMEC's President, was reelected as Vice Speaker of the AOA House of Delegates (HOD). He was originally elected as Vice Speaker in March, 2014. Prior to his appointment, Dr. Broder has served the AOA in other capacities, including Vice Chairman of the Council on Postdoctoral Training Institutions. He is also Past President of the New York State Osteopathic Medical Society and currently serves as its Parliamentarian.

AOA to Host Board Certification Summit

The American Osteopathic Association is holding a Board Certification Summit on July 30-31, 2016, in Chicago, where members of all 18 AOA certifying boards, AOA leadership, and the members of the AOA's recently formed Certifying Board Services Task Force will discuss ways to realign board certification, including simplifying osteopathic continuous certification and improving the customer experience.

AOA President Boyd R. Buser, D.O., affirmed that during and after the transition to the ACGME Single Accreditation System, AOA board certification will continue to be available to D.O.s trained through either AOA- or ACGME-accredited residency programs and will expand to include M.D.s interested in osteopathic training opportunities through ACGME. 
 
"AOA board certification signifies the highest quality standard for physicians trained to practice through osteopathic principles," Buser said.
Research Opportunity: JAOA Call for Papers

Physicians are seeking information that can be implemented immediately in clinical practice to enhance patient care. As such, the  Journal of the American Osteopathic Association (JAOA) is issuing a call for papers on the following topics:
  • Outbreaks in a globalized world (Ebola, Zika virus);
  • Opioid use, abuse, and alternatives in pain management;
  • Chronic pain and pain rehabilitation;
  • Vaping, marijuana, and cannabinoids;
  • Lifestyle medicine in disease management and prevention;
  • Elderly patient care.

White Coat Ceremonies Season at NYCOMEC Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine


On Monday, May 16, 2016, Touro  College of Osteopathic Medicine-Harlem Class of 2018 celebrated their White Coat Ceremony, marking the students' transition from their preclinical to clinical medical training at the end of their second year of study. To read more, please click here.

314 physician candidates of NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine's Class of 2018 received white coats, hugs, and practical advice at the White Coat Ceremony that took place on July 20, 2016.  "Your future is limitless," said Wolfgang Gilliar, D.O., Dean, NYITCOM. "You are the ones who decide in which direction medicine will move. You will be the future of medicine-and that is no easy task." To read more, please click here The White Coat Ceremony for the NYITCOM Class of 2020 will take place on Tuesday, August 23, 2016.

A White Coat Ceremony will take place at the NYITCOM at Arkansas on August 5, 2016, to celebrate the beginning of the Class of 2020's medical education. The event will include congratulatory remarks by NYIT President Edward Guiliano, Site Dean Barbara Ross-Lee, Dean Wolfgang Gilliar, and Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs Shane Speights prior to the students' donning of their new white coats.
JAOA Editor-in-Chief Urges Growth of Scholarly Activity

Robert Orenstein, D.O., the editor in chief of the JAOA, is urging osteopathic medical schools to cultivate a culture of scholarly activity. He also discussed at the AOA House of Delegates the challenges osteopathic researchers, educators, and scholarly clinicians face in meeting this requirement, and what the  JAOA is doing to help. 

Scholarly activity can include:
  • Discovery: Research publication and abstracts.
  • Integration: Adding to and summarizing literature.
  • Application: Developing evidence-based guidelines and quality standards.
  • Teaching: Disseminating evidence and lecturing.

NYITCOM Faculty Present Parkinson's Disease Research at International Conference

, the Chair of the Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) Department and Joanne Donoghue, Ph.D.Jayme Mancini, D.O., Ph.D., and Adena Leder, D.O., all Assistant Professors representing the NYITCOM OMM Department, presented their research on Parkinson's disease at the 20th International Congress of Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders that took place in Berlin, Germany, between June 19th and June 23rd, 2016. SBH Health System Names New Chief Medical Officer

Eric C. Appelbaum, D.O., FACOI, was appointed Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at the SBH Health System (St. Barnabas Hospital).

"As healthcare is changing, particularly here in the Bronx, I'm confident that he's the right person to lead the medical staff and SBH into the future" said Dr. Perlstein, President/CEO, SBH Health System. 

Dr. Appelbaum earned his medical degree at the  NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine. To read more, please click here.

NYITCOM  Student  Won Karen J. Nichols, DO, LEAD Scholar Award

Louisa Sethi, OMS III , NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine won the Karen J. Nichols, DO, LEAD Scholar Award at the  First Round of American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF) Awards. She has received several awards and honors from NYITCOM and has held leadership roles with the Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents (COSGP), the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and New York State Osteopathic Medical Society (NYOMS). She and the other a ward winners will take the stage at the AOF Honors 2016.
