Trainee Committee Meeting: March 22, 2016

All NYCOMEC trainees are invited to attend the next regularly scheduled meeting of the Trainee Committee, which will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2016, at 6:30 p.m. in Conference Room C, Serota Academic Center, NYITCOM, Old Westbury Campus.  

The Trainee Committee meetings offer a forum where interns, residents and fellows are apprised of important issues regarding their education and training. It also provides opportunities for trainees to share GME-related issues and concerns in an open and confidential environment.  

All trainees are welcome; however, only elected Trainee Committee members have voting privileges. Please direct your trainees to  RSVP if they plan to attend.

NYCOMEC and NYIT Center for Sports Medicine Co-Sponsor Faculty Development Program

The faculty development program titled Concussions, co-sponsored by NYCOMEC and NYIT Center for Sports Medicine, will take place on   Wednesday, April 6, 2016,   from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., in the Rockefeller Auditorium, Old Westbury Campus. 

The program targets primary care and sports medicine physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and athletic trainers. It anticipates being approved for 4.5 AOA category 1A CME credits for physicians, 4.5 BOC category A CEU credits for athletic trainers, and 4.5 NYS Physical Therapy Continuing Education credits.

Update from ACGME Annual Conference 


Over 3,000 physicians and GME staff attended the ACGME's Annual Conference, which was held in National Harbor, Maryland, on February 25-28, 2016. 
Tara Zahtila, D.O., Director of Medical Education, Plainview Hospital, gave a presentation to conference attendees titled Following the Yellow Brick Road: Navigating the Transition from Osteopathic to ACGME Accreditation. The ACGME conference theme was "Forging Ahead" and focused on the progression made in transitioning to the ACGME single accreditation system. 
NYCOMEC 15th Annual Research Poster Competition - Call for Posters

Submissions are now being accepted for  Best Experimental Research  and  Best Case Presentation in the NYCOMEC 15th Annual Research Poster Competition, which will be held  on  May 19, 2016, in conjunction with NYCOMEC's Grand Rounds. All trainees from NYCOMEC member institutions are invited to participate.

Survey on Educational Resources for MDs to Fulfill Prerequisite Training for ACGME-Accredited Programs with Osteopathic Recognition

AACOM is conducting a survey to identify resources that are/will be available to allopathic students and graduates who seek to fulfill prerequisites for ACGME-accredited programs with Osteopathic Recognition. An example of such a resource is the American Academy of Osteopathy's (AAO) recently developed course, entitled "Introduction to Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine."  Read the  course description

Dr. Goldberg Published a Perspective Article in Academic Medicine
 
Robert B. Goldberg, D.O. , Dean, TouroCOM-Harlem Campus, co-wrote with Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., the perspective article titled Offshore Medical Schools Are Buying Clinical Clerkships in U.S. Hospitals: The Problem and Potential Solutions. Funding Opportunity Available for Research on Osteopathic Philosophy

The AOA is seeking applications for research studies rooted in the osteopathic philosophy to help raise awareness about the contributions D.O.s make to patient care.  D.O.s conducting research about osteopathic medicine's value-based and distinctive approach to care can submit proposals through May 3, 2016.
