The keynote speaker, Neil Vora, M.D., Career Epidemiology Field Officer, Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Director of Special Projects for the Division of Disease Control, NYC Department of Health & Mental Hygiene, gave a tim
ely briefing on the Zika virus, including an overview of the CDC and NYC Health Department's response to the current Zika outbreak, methods for reporting diseases, and how physicians can pursue a career in public health.

He also discussed the benefits of using practice consultants to maximize success and encouraged physicians to continually monitor the future direction of medical payment systems.

Daniel Van Arsdale, D.O., discussed the impact of OMT on the interoceptive nervous system, specifically how OMT can positively use the intero-ceptive nervous system to change clinical outcomes.

In the final presentation,
Anthony Sampino, D.O. described the potential role of Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARC) methods in reducing unintended pregnancy rates, how to select appropriate candidates for LARC methods, and how to identify management strategies for clinical problems and patient concerns related to use of LARC methods.

NYCOMEC Poster Competition
NYCOMEC held its 15th Annual Research Poster Competition, in conjunction with its Spring Grand Rounds on May 18 at the LaGuardia Marriott Hotel. The annual competition recognizes the excellent research efforts that are occurring at NYCOMEC-affiliated training programs. Over 50 posters were reviewed by a panel of judges, who bestowed awards to first, second and third place winners in two categories: experimental research and clinical case studies.

Touro College Research Day: ER Reduces Radiation Exposure in Children with Suspected Appendicitis
Physicians can safely reduce the use of computed tomography (CT) scans in children who have a suspected appendicitis by performing an ultrasound first, according to preliminary results of a retrospective study presented at Touro College Research Day. To read more please click here.

NYITCOM Research Program Seeks to Develop "Fit Physicians"
Researchers at NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) are trying to determine whether or not activity monitors, exercise, and monthly wellness seminars help medical students improve fitness, reduce stress, and score higher on tests? The "Fit Physician" study will measure students' physical activity, academic scores, sleep patterns, and stress levels against a control group and a third group that will wear fitness trackers, but not attend the wellness or exercise programs.
