OMM Workshop for Trainees and Faculty

A n OMM Workshop, taught by the NYITCOM's Department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) and designed for the NYCOMEC's trainees and faculty, will take place on Wednesday, December 6, 2017, from 6:15 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., in the OMM laboratory located on the first floor in Serota Academic Center, NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine, Old Westbury Campus.

The workshop will be open for registrants which have working knowledge of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine from all ACGME programs at your hospital.

Preregistration is required. Due to limited space please RSVP by Wednesday, November 29, 2017. Dinner will be provided starting 5:00 p.m.
Bridging the Gap between UME and GME

NYCOMEC co-sponsored, in conjunction with the NYIT Center for Global Health, the Global Health Grand Rounds titled  Refugee Status: A Comprehensive Look at the Painful Existence, on November 3, 2017, in the Rockefeller Auditorium, Old Westbury Campus. The speaker, Abier A. Abdelanaby, M.D., Associate Professor of Surgery, UT Southwestern Medical Center discussed about refugee and migrant health, cultural understanding and humanitarian responses.

Pain Medicine Review Committee
The corrected and most recent Program Requirements for Graduate Medical Education in Pain Medicine are available on the Program Requirements and FAQs and Applications pages of the Anesthesiology , Neurology , and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation sections of the ACGME website.

The Requirements that were posted as "Currently in Effect" between July 1, 2017 and November 2, 2017 did not reflect the change to include child neurology as a core specialty that was approved by the Board in June 2017 to be effective July 1, 2017.

Surgery: Vascular Surgery Review Committee
The corrected and most recent Program Requirements for Graduate Medical Education in Vascular Surgery are available on the
Program Requirements and FAQs and Applications  page of the Surgery section of the ACGME website.

The Requirements that were posted as "Currently in Effect" between July 1, 2017 and October 24, 2017 did not reflect the change to requirement III.A.2.d that was approved by the Board in June 2017 to be effective July 1, 2017.

Attention Researchers: Apply Now to Get Funding for Your Osteopathic Projects

The AOA is accepting applications for its next grant cycle. Osteopathic researchers (physicians, physicians in training and medical students) can apply for  research grants or research training grants through January 31, 2018.

Research grants are available for research in osteopathic philosophy, chronic diseases and conditions, osteopathic manipulative medicine/osteopathic manipulative treatment, musculoskeletal injuries and prevention, and pain management.

Also, two  research training programs  were introduced last year to encourage physicians in training and medical students to contribute to osteopathic research throughout their career.

Stand Up against Opiates

The comedy show Stand Up against Opiates, sponsored by the Residency Program in Social Medicine at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital and Steve Rosenberg, will take place on Saturday, December 2, 2017, at 8:00 p.m., on 230 Elm Street, Southampton, NY. All the proceeds will go to drug awareness on the East End of Long Island.

NYCOMEC Program Director Save Man's Life during Lunch at Denver Restaurant

Dr. David Levy, an emergency physician and Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center located in West Islip, NY, and a group of other six emergency medicine physicians, four of them being his former residents, were attending a conference in Denver on November 6, 2017, when they stopped for lunch at a sandwich shop near the conference center. An  employee from a neighboring car rental business and a regular at the restaurant, came in and collapsed, going in cardiac arrest. After several rounds of CPR and three shocks from an automated external defibrillator, the man regained pulse and was transferred to a local hospital for intensive care.
