NYCOMEC Achieves Initial Accreditation Under the ACGME SAS
|
At the October, 2016, meeting of the ACGME Institutional Review Committee (IRC), NYCOMEC's application for Institutional Sponsorship under the Single Accreditation System was granted
Initial Accreditation, retroactivto July 1, 2016.
A special thank you is extended to the members of the NYCOMEC ACGME Transition Task Force and its Chairman, Catherine Caronia, M.D., for their assistance in achieving this designation.
NYCOMEC will serve as the Institutional Sponsor for several training programs and will continue to provide assistance with accreditation, Osteopathic Recognition, faculty development, trainee recruitment, research, advocacy, and communication resources to all member institutions.

NYCOMEC's Speakers Bureau
Do You Have Expertise in an Area of Medicine, Surgery or Osteopathic Medicine? Do You Need Additional Scholarly Activity?
If yes, we would like to invite you to participate in NYCOMEC's Speakers Bureau. The Speakers Bureau is comprised of physicians and faculty who are available to present at another institution's grand rounds, medical symposium, or other medical education programs.
Topics may encompass broad overviews of specific medical/surgical fields, case presentations/clinical issues, or other practice related topics, i.e. quality and risk management, cultural competency, coding, etc.
NYCOMEC will promote these speaking engagements among our membership, working with all parties to arrange mutually convenient dates and times for each presentation.
Presentations of this type meet the ACGME's Common Program Requirements on scholarly activity for faculty. [Standard II.B.5.b).(3)]

Board Member Training Seminar
NYCOMEC's accounting firm, Cerini and Associates, LLP, hosted a Board Member Training Seminar on October 27, 2016, at Carlyle At The Palace located in Plainview, NY.
Mr. Stuart Almer, COO at Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center attended the informative event as a NYCOMEC Board member. The program provided attendees with an understanding of the obligations and responsibilities of being a Board member, including the
duties, legal exposure, expectations of the organization, time and money commitments, etc. To obtain their handout,

OMM Faculty/Trainee Workshop a Success
NYCOMEC's OMM workshop, titled
Bring Your Faculty To An OMM Workshop, was attended by more than 45 residents and faculty members, who spent the evening of October 13, 2016, discussing case presentations and participating in the demonstration of appropriate OMM treatments.
The following hospitals had representatives in attendance:
Brookhaven Memorial Medical Center, Coney Island Hospital, Flushing Hospital Medical Center, Nassau University Medical Center, South Nassau Communities Hospital, and St. Barnabas Hospital.

2016 NYCOMEC Sponsored a NYITCOM Sports Medicine Conference
On Monday, October 24, 2016, NYITCOM and NYCOMEC co-hosted the third semiannual Sports Medicine Conference, entitled
Beyond the Sideline: Unique Sports Medicine Considerations. Close to 40 physicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers, NYCOMEC trainees and NYITCOM students attended. The conference covered a wide range of topics concerning today's athletes and those engaged in their wellness. Presentations covered athlete performance; elbow, tendons and other common injuries; concussions and post concussive disorders; and functional movement assessments.
The keynote speaker, Adena Leder, D.O., a neurologist and Assistant Professor at NYITCOM, spoke of the prevalence of sports-related concussions and the benefits of OMM treatment in concussions.

Active 2016 Fall Inspection Calendar
NYCOMEC Director of Accreditation Lynn Mark, D.O., and Accreditation Coordinator Joseph DeNicola have been collaborating with our member institutions to ensure they are prepared to meet and exceed the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) standards at their site reviews. A significant number of NYCOMEC institutions and programs have been inspected this fall, and NYCOMEC staff have provided on-site support.

Webinars on Medicare's New Local Coverage Determination (LCD) for OMT
Medicare contractor, National Government Services (NGS) is offering educational webinars
to review the new local coverage determination (LCD) for osteopathic manipulative treatment.
The webinars will provide guidance in determining medical necessity, documentation requirements and understanding utilization guidelines. Attendees will also learn about the requirements necessary to bill an evaluation and management visit with an OMT visit.
Webinars will be offered:
- Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at 7-8:30 p.m. ET.
- Wednesday, November 9, 2016, at 1-2:30 p.m. ET.
The new LCD becomes effective November 1, 2016 in 10 states: Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maine, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and Wisconsin.

FEMA Approves South Nassau Communities Hospital's Application to Expand Medical Services
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved South Nassau Communities Hospital's plan to improve medical services for the South Shore of Nassau County by expanding Emergency Services in Long Beach and investing FEMA funds at the hospital's Oceanside campus to improve care for more than 900,000 area residents.
