7 Reasons to Leave Your House this Week
By Josh Gray

In the second act Eugene O'Neill's masterwork "A Long Day's Journey Into Night", one of the four main characters ponders, "The past is the present, isn't it? It's the future too". While some may choose to relegate such a sentiment to some kind of a morbid hopelessness, I can't help but take it for its simple truth. I think in one sense it's comforting to know that the things we've experienced in the past will revisit us in the future, but we will be better equipped to recognize and adapt to life's events, good and bad. While that may weigh a little heavy, this concept rings true in most areas of life. With the island coming back to all her summer glory in the coming weeks, I recognize returning events, as well as notice some missing from the calendar. Different versions of the same things: a replaying of a childhood film, a familiar musical act, or a retelling of an age old tale.

This week marks the 20 th anniversary of the prestigious Nantucket Wine Festival, and the island will really light up for a few days with many restaurants and shops doing their most brisk business of the year to date. My girlfriend and I are about to head out for New York for a few days to see the Broadway revival of the above mentioned play, my favorite piece of literature ever written, I think. And while, as I've said before, there's always a tinge of regret when I leave this island, I know that our weeks and months ahead are full of fun, worthwhile and memorable opportunities that I continually hope will present themselves in one way or another, again and again.

Here's some of what this week has in store:

Dalton & the Sheriffs at the Chicken Box, Friday and Saturday, 10:30 p.m.-1 a.m.
Back in action at the Chicken Box, Dalton & the Sheriffs are a favorite visiting band on Nantucket every summer. A mix of rock and country with loud guitars and a singer with a solid voice, music fans should head over to the Box either Friday or Saturday night, but expect to pay a cover of $10 at the door. Here's one of their music videos.

Flashback Film: "The Princess Bride" at the Dreamland, Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
I don't think any childhood is complete without seeing this classic film. Now in my 30's, I still remember the first time I saw this movie here on Nantucket as an eight or nine year old. The images and dialogue that captured my attention back then, do so today, with classic characters and a timeless story. Friendly for the whole family, this is sure to be a memorable Saturday outing. Tickets are available online or at the box office.

Staged Reading: "Mary Me a Little" at the Atheneum, Saturday at 7 p.m.
Anyone looking for some solid entertainment on a Saturday evening would be hard-pressed to beat this one. Co-sponsored with Theatre Workshop of Nantucket, this event will be held in the Atheneum's historic Great Hall and is free and open to the public. Described as "a charming and bittersweet musical revue featuring songs by Stephen Sondheim, two urban singles share a Saturday night of sweet fantasies and deep yearning while never leaving the confines of their solitary apartments. This one act musical re-invigorates Sondheim songs culled from Anyone Can Whistle, Follies, Company, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and A Little Night Music."

Common Ground: DJ Billy Desmond at Atlas, Saturday, 9 p.m.
DJ Billy Desmond of Audio Architects will be dropping the beats at Atlas this Saturday evening beginning at 10 p.m. Those who love house music are sure to have a fun time at this event, and don't forget to head over to the restaurant early for dinner before the music starts. Atlas is a great space and run lovingly by Brandt and Gabrielle Gould, whom many of you know. Recently, they've not only created a great 2016 menu, but have also created a space for many interesting, community-minded dinners, tastings, and events.

87th Annual Opening Day at the Hospital Thrift Shop, India Street, Monday at 10 a.m.
This is an always fun day that raises money for a great cause, our very own Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Getting in there on the first day, treasure seekers can, and often do, find an assorted mix of just that -- treasure, from trinkets to great vintage clothing, fine furniture and jewelry, and much more -- all at very inexpensive prices. A line will form down the street, so get there early and bring some cash.

20
th Anniversary Nantucket Wine Festival, Wednesday - Sunday, at the White Elephant and various downtown locations

A big event for islanders and visitors alike, the Nantucket Wine Festival celebrates its 20 th anniversary next week. Begun humbly by longtime island resident Denis Toner, the festival has grown to a well-respected and very well-known celebration of all things fine wine and food. While some of the highlight events can get quite pricey, the grand tastings and some of the other tickets throughout the five day festival are well worth the money and effort. It's an opportunity to discover something new and observe something really interesting, whether you're a wine enthusiast or not. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit their website: https://www.nantucketwinefestival.com/

While there are many more fun, interesting and deserving events on the Nantucket calendar this week, this is a list of what I'm personally excited about. If you find yourself out and about enjoying any of the above or anything at all on Nantucket, I'd love to hear about it. Send me a tweet or tag me on Instagram at @jzebgray

Greydon House to Open this Summer Opposite the Town and County Building
Mary Bergman

One of the island's most-watched development projects will be revealed this summer with the opening of boutique luxury 20-room Greydon House with a 59-seat restaurant at 17 Broad Street, at the corner of Broad and Federal opposite the Town and County Building.

Faros Properties, a New York City real estate investment firm established by Alexander Leventhal, Jeremy Leventhal and Elliot Gould (not to be confused with the star of the film MASH who shares the same name), purchased the former Dr. Wylie Collins house in July of 2014. Dr. Collins' house was moved to the corner of the lot. Built after the Great Fire of 1846, the Greek Revival house is evocative of the tail end of Nantucket's whaling heyday.

Nantucket-based architecture firm Emeritus designed the guest house, now comprised of the renovated Collins house and a new Second Empire-style building, which echoes the architecture of the Second French Empire. A mansard roof with dormers allows for sweeping views of downtown from the intimate guestrooms.

Design firm Roman and Williams, known for their trendy hotels with a vintage vibe, like Ace New York and Chicago Athletic Association, is transforming both the new and historic buildings on the property into a "luxury bohemian" haven. The firm is often lauded for creating spaces that feel as though they have been there forever--a tall order for a new building on Nantucket.

Designers Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch seem well suited for the challenge. The couple behind Roman and Williams had a long career in film design, creating the worlds of Practical Magic, Zoolander, and Duplex, to name a few. Standefer and Alesch have also designed residences for life-long summer resident actor Ben Stiller.

Jeff David, Principal of Greydon Hotel Group and Managing Partner of Greydon House, sat down with me to talk about the how the island's past influenced the ethos of the guesthouse.

A self-proclaimed "history junkie," David describes the guest house's design and vibe as an extension of the island's bohemian art colony days. Greydon House won't look like something out of Coastal Living, but it does pay homage the the island's seafaring heritage. David pulls out an iPad to show me some of Roman and Williams' muse points for the decor. Hand-painted Portuguese tile murals of the sea, painted furniture, rich textiles, and eclectic items curated from salvage and curio shops remind David of staying in the home of an uncle who has traveled the world, who also has an impressive collection of modern art that is sure to attract gallery-goers.

I'm instantly reminded of two of my favorite places on Nantucket. The first is the Nantucket Historical Association's Greater Light property where sisters Gertrude and Hanna Monaghan transformed a pig barn into their summer residence and art studio, now open to the public seasonally for tours. The second is the home of Nantucket's modern-day Hanna, artist Beverly Hall and her husband, art historian and collector David Billings. If you have ever dreamed of spending a night in a space like these, Greydon House might fit the bill.

Greydon House Nantucket
Jeff David

Jeff David, named Hotelier of the Year in 2012 by the Anguilla Hotel and Tourism Association, has had a long and successful career opening and managing luxury properties, most recently as managing director of The Knickerbocker, Time Square's first luxury hotel. (A glimpse into how detail-oriented David is: he slept in 289 of The Knickerbocker's 330 rooms.) Greydon House is the result of his partnership with Faros.

David studied at the University of California Los Angeles where he majored in Fine Art. He took a job washing dishes at the Regent Beverly Wilshire hotel in Beverly Hills (the sometimes home of Elvis, Warren Beatty, and John Lennon, as well as primary filming location for Pretty Woman) and worked his way up the ranks.

David's first general management position was on Cape Cod, at the Ocean Edge Resort & Club in Brewster. He was also resort manager of the Chatham Bars Inn during the 2006/2007 sale and restructure of the property. David and his family have a house in Osterville on the Cape and are looking forward to spending more time close to home.

Storytelling is important to hospitality, David explains. He has worked with Marjan Shirzad at the Nantucket Historical Association, a neighbor of the guest house, to explore ways of including storytelling and Nantucket history in training for the Greydon House staff.

Greydon House will reflect David's philosophy of altruism that is at the center of the do-everything staffing culture the hotel will have. "Good does good things," David says of his core beliefs.

David wants his guests to expect the unexpected--complimentary mini bar with homemade snacks, waterproof cell phone cases, in-room tablets for Netflix binges, superfast wifi, and complimentary flip flops for the beach instead of cotton slippers.

Creating an authentic feeling for the soul of a new hotel is not an easy task, and it will be interesting to see how Greydon House unfolds. The thoughtful touches that Emeritus, Roman and Williams, and David's hospitality team have implemented will go far in ensuring Greydon House becomes a mainstay of the island's landscape.

Mary Bergman is a writer, historian, and novice scalloper. Originally from Provincetown, MA she moved to Nantucket in search of a more remote spit of sand. She is working on a novel about growing up in Provincetown and can be found on the beach or http://marybbergman.wordpress.com.

Nantucket Author Series -- Page to Stage

The Dreamland Presents Page to Stage
Nantucket's favorite bestselling authors discuss their newest books

The Dreamland Film & Performing Arts Center has announced "Page to Stage, an Author Series," comprised of six conversations with leading Nantucket authors.

Included in the inaugural season are Nathaniel Philbrick, Elin Hilderbrand, Nancy Thayer, John Breglio, Rob Cocuzzo, and Wendy Rouillard. Each author will discuss their newest book, read select passages, and have a brief question and answer period.

Nat Philbrick and Elin Hilderbrand

Each of the authors (with the exception of Wendy Rouillard) will be interviewed on stage in the main theater by well-known Nantucketers, including Natalie Jacobson, John Shea and Charley Walters. Following the author presentation, Mitchell's Book Corner will sell books by the presenting author in the Dreamland lobby. The authors will be available to sign their books.

For the younger audience, Wendy Rouillard, author of the children's "Barnaby" series, will present a birthday party for Barnaby over Columbus Day weekend, including a Barnaby reading, activities, decorating cupcakes, and, of course, a Barnaby appearance. Each guest will receive a gift bag. There will be two presentations on Saturday, October 9, 2016.

Nancy Thayer and Wendy Rouillard

"Nantucket has so many terrific authors and we're thrilled to incorporate this series into our programming at the Dreamland to learn about their newest work," said the Dreamland's Executive Director Joe Hale. "Even better, all of the proceeds from the Author Series will benefit our year-round Children's Theater Education Programming." Ticket prices range between $20 and $35 for each event and can be purchased at the box office at 17 South Water Street or online at www.nantucketdreamland.org.
