Fostering Workforce Development
Congratulations to National CyberWatch member, Towson University, in its recent partnership with Maryland National Guard to boost workforce development in cybersecurity. They signed a formal agreement that will include collaborating on military appreciation programs at campus sporting events, working to identify soldiers who want to further their cybersecurity education, more community outreach, and cybersecurity training for guardsmen and students.

Framework for Decision Makers
Encryption protects information stored on smartphones, laptops and other devices, sometimes by default. Encrypted communication is provided by widely used computing devices and services such as smartphones, laptops and messaging applications. Individuals, organizations and governments rely on encryption to counter threats from a wide range of culprits, including unsophisticated and sophisticated criminals, foreign intelligence agencies and repressive governments. Encryption on its own does not solve the challenge of providing effective security for data and systems, but it is an important tool.

National Cyber League
Like any great sporting event, cybersecurity competitions yield the best and brightest professionals that are in increasing demand. Among these events across the country is the National Cyber League (NCL), a virtual cybersecurity competition tied to specific learning objectives displayed through Scouting Reports. High school or college students can participate in the regular season.

Emma Garrison-Alexander is the vice dean of the Cyber Security and Information Assurance department at The Graduate School at the University of Maryland-University College. Transform Cybersecurity Education
Hacking threats are increasingly problematic, but the Community College Cyber Summit (3CS) is working to keep the cybersecurity workforce up to snuff.
